Washington DC – -(Ammoland.com)-  Former Texas Land Commissioner and open carry advocate Jerry Patterson says “nut jobs” have pushed open carry “off the rails” in Texas.

From cornering state representativess in their offices to announcing it’s “time to hunt some Republicans,” certain open carry groups have turned the open carry movement into a farce, according to Patterson.

Because of this, NBC DFW reports that open carry momentum that rested on “800,000 concealed handgun license holders” and Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) support is now floundering.

“(Open Carry) has been pushed off the rails by nut jobs,” Patterson said.

Mediaite.com reported that one the most prominent antics has been the way Open Carry Tarrant County “[harassed] Democrat lawmakers” until said lawmakers had panic buttons installed in their offices.  This is the same group that said it’s “time to hunt some Republicans” after Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s (R) said open carry may not be a priority at this point because a greater focus has been placed on campus carry.

On January 9 2015, Breitbart News reported that Open Carry Tarrant County was producing a series of YouTube videos called, “Cop Block,” that allegedly show members confronting police officers during the performance of their duty. Group members openly carry weapons during these confrontations.

Open Carry Texas (OCT) — the predominant open carry organization in the state — has made clear that they disapprove of the kind of tactics undertaken by Open Carry Tarrant County. OCT told Breitbart News: “OCT does not condone or support harassing police officers, and we certainly do not support anyone shadowing officers with guns.”

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America has opposed open carry in Texas from the moment the topic came up. The “nut jobs” Patterson talked about may have inadvertently bolstered Moms Demand’s position.

[Editors: Or maybe not…. we shall see. One man's ‘nut job' is an other man's ‘civil rights advocate'.]

I don’t think that’s what they are addressing at all. The issue is with the morons that open carry modern rifles and scare the crap out of old ladies. Scared old ladies= restrictive legislation. This type of OC makes no sense, unless you’re in Compton CA.

I agree with Cea. It’s no one’s business what or if I’m carrying. If you want to parade around with it on your hip, have at it.

I must say, though, that most of the open carriers I see have a HIPoint in a $5 gun show holster and think they are prepared.

Concealed for me, thanks.

No sensible reason to open carry. Unless you are military or LEO.
It may be a right (to open carry), but that doesn’t make it right.

The above post is referring to OC in public places. I acknowledge that there are many reasons to OC on private property.

Geez, I shake my head when I hear comments like this “..no reason to..” and “…in public places”. Have you guys totally forgotten that most of the States in this country allow open carry with NO problem at all? In Virginia open carry has been legal for more than 150 years. It’s a RIGHT not a privelidge, get it back and stop acting like a bunch of sheep that are afraid of scaring someone. I totally agree that you don’t act belligerently or aggressively but that’s not what open carry is. It’s conducting your every day life peacefully and quietly… Read more »

Not a sheep at all! Quite the opposite actually. It’s just that bad guys make an “Okay” living learning how to screw the average guy. A bit dangerous and not my style, but they seem to thrive, for a short time at least. When everyone sees your gun, the occasional bad guy sees it too. If there is any way possible, at all, and the opportunity presents itself, they will try to screw you, to get your gun. They may not get it, but you create an instant SHTF scenario. I already said that I know it is a right!… Read more »

Actually, his comments sound more like justification for ignoring promises. Excuses for not carrying through with things he supposedly ‘supports’. I don’t know that is true, but gee Jerry, it does sound a lot like “But if we just shut up people who I do not want to have their own ideas…” Just sayin’
