DeKalb, Illinois – Reed Snyder and J.W. Ramp are proud to bring you this week’s edition of the AR-15 Podcast. Episode 120 features Cory from CDS Arms to discuss this week’s topic: are pistol caliber ARs relevant in a SHTF scenario? The first question of course is what exactly a pistol caliber AR is for those that are a little hazy on the definition. The hosts get into some of the minutiae of the subtleties of what makes a pistol caliber AR is, but the short answer is an AR platform chambered in a common pistol caliber such as 9mm.
But the meat of the question is, why would anyone desire an AR chambered in a pistol caliber? In the context of the discussion, the hosts keep the discussion to a SHTF scenario and how PCARs would be useful. One of the more obvious advantages are the availability of common pistol ammunition. A second obvious advantage is not having duplicitous ammunition calibers for emergencies, meaning that sidearm ammunition can be readily used in your primary long arm. Some disadvantages discussed are of course the limited range and stopping power of a pistol round. The guys go beyond the more obvious discussion topics and delve into cross compatibility of equipment, reliability, and permanent alteration.
