Delaware -(Ammoland.com)-  The judges’ decisions are in, with five top entries chosen for the Division of Fish & Wildlife’s 2014/15 Delaware Hunting Photo Contest.

First place was awarded to Scott Lee of Laurel for “Sunrise Over Assawoman Bay,” featuring Tommy Lee waterfowl hunting at the Assawoman Wildlife Area near Frankford. The second place winner was “A Great Day of Duck Hunting!,” taken by Angela Garcia of Smyrna, of her 9-year-old son Dominic Garcia waterfowl hunting at the Cedar Swamp Wildlife Area near Townsend.

“Our hunting photo contest theme was ‘Hunters in Action,’ and this year’s winner captures a hunter anticipating the promise of hunting action with the sunrise,” Division of Fish & Wildlife Director David Saveikis said, noting that the top five included a variety of ages of hunters. “We’re sure the public will once again enjoy seeing these hunting action images captured here in Delaware,” he added.

Three judges – Fish & Wildlife Director Saveikis, and local photographers Tony Pratt and Freda Barrett, both DNREC employees – reviewed 36 entries and narrowed them to the top five. The contest specified that photographs must have been taken in Delaware. This year’s “Hunters in Action” theme carried a lot of photographic consideration from the judges in selecting winning entries.

“We were very happy to have so many photographs to choose from for this year’s contest,” said Mr. Pratt. “In reviewing the entries, I always look for the best representation of the theme as well as the essential elements of a good photograph: great light, the right moment, and careful composition. I urge all future contest contributors to consider these elements when shooting for the next contest.”

“This year, we had Delaware residents submit great photos of the “Hunters In Action” theme,” said Ms. Barrett, noting that the quality of submissions has increased steadily each year since the contest began in 2011. “The best photos involve people actually participating in these activities, not just posing for the photos. Those taking the photos should pay attention to their backgrounds. As always, the contest photos are a great addition to the Hunting Guide.”

Other photographers recognized for honorable mention were:

  • “The Ducks Don’t Stand a Chance!” by Angela Garcia of Smyrna, featuring Dominic Garcia waterfowl hunting at the Cedar Swamp Wildlife Area near Townsend.
  • “The Morning Hunt,” taken by Colby Reynolds, featuring Blake Fletcher waterfowl hunting near Milton.
  • “Sunrise Gaze,” taken by Allan Austin Gardner-Bowler of Milford, featuring Dominique Gabriella Rodriguez-Costa Tusso hunting near Milford.

The winning photos will appear in the 2015-2016 Delaware Hunting and Trapping Guide. The hunting guide will be available online, at the DNREC license counter in Dover, and at hunting license agents statewide in July 2015.
