Washington, DC – (AmmoLand.com) Joseph Hosmer, President Safari Club International Foundation (SCI Foundation) and Scott Throckmorton, CEO Humanitarian Operations Protecting Elephants (H.O.P.E.) jointly announced that SCI Foundation and H.O.P.E. signed a Memorandum of Understanding to join forces in support of anti-poaching, anti-wildlife trafficking, wildlife conservation and humanitarian efforts in Africa. This new partnership will promote the concept of sustainable use in conservation and facilitate effective solutions to end the plight of poaching.
Both 501(c)(3) nonprofit charities share the goal of combatting poaching through community engagement and creating incentives for local people to conserve wildlife. With the authorization of African governments, H.O.P.E. works to provide professional training, advisory, assistance and locating services to anti-poaching units in Africa. SCI Foundation funds and directs worldwide programs dedicated to wildlife conservation and works with both US and African government leaders to facilitate effective wildlife policy.
“H.O.P.E. has tremendous experience working at the highest levels of governments as well as local communities to provide resources needed to effectively prevent and disrupt illicit wildlife trafficking; with our combined knowledge we are sure to make an impact,” SCI Foundation President, Joseph Hosmer said. “Anti-Poaching efforts take an immense amount of resources and our joint efforts will create more opportunities to put boots on the ground to save elephants.”
SCI Foundation and HOPE understand the importance of sustainable use in conservation. Community-based programs that sustainably utilize natural resources and create value for wildlife give people incentives to conserve wildlife.
“Research and experience shows that the sustainable use of wildlife is a key component of successful anti-poaching strategies,” said J. Scott Throckmorton, CEO of HOPE. “Sustainable use empowers rural African communities to manage the animals they share the landscape with in a way that is regulated, profitable and encourages conservation of the species. This kind of empowerment makes it more difficult for poaching networks to gain a foothold in the places where elephants are found. SCI Foundation is the world leader in promoting sustainable use and is a natural fit for our work to end Africa’s poaching crisis.”
Through a mixture of enforcement and economic development, H.O.P.E. and SCI Foundation will help partners achieve success in countering the poaching crisis that is undermining Africa’s peace and prosperity. Our organizations are constantly seeking like-minded entities to propel our mission and look forward to producing effective and efficient resolutions through this beneficial partnership.
