Virginia -(Ammoland.com)- The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) and the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance (WVDVA) have announced veterans and active duty military personnel will receive discounted rates at West Virginia State Parks.
“Veterans Salute” is a year-round 10 percent discount on all standard lodge rooms, cabins and campsites, according to Sam England, Chief of DNR’s Parks and Recreation Section.
Additional discounts and offers for veterans and military personnel may be offered seasonally as “salutes” to West Virginia’s men and women in uniform. In 2015, veterans and active duty military personnel also are extended free swimming at any outdoor pool at a West Virginia state park during the open season.
To take advantage of this year-round lodging discount, veterans should present their DD214 or West Virginia driver’s license with “veteran” designation to receive the discount on rooms, cabins or camp site rentals. Active duty military personnel may present their Common Access Card (CAC).
“The West Virginia driver’s license with the ‘veteran designation’ is the easiest method for identification and we encourage veterans to take advantage of this acknowledgement through the Division of Motor Vehicles,” said DNR Director Bob Fala. “The United States Flag emblem in the lower right corner of the driver’s license is welcomed as identification.”
WVDVA Cabinet Secretary Rick Thompson said, “As a veteran and an avid outdoorsman, I believe this program makes perfect sense. West Virginians are always looking for ways to thank our veterans and military members. State parks and forests are very affordable, but the discount is an additional incentive for our servicemen and women to enjoy these outstanding public places.”
Information about the “veteran designation” on West Virginia driver’s licenses is available at local Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices. To learn more about West Virginia’s state parks and forest events and accommodations, visit www.wvstateparks.com.
About the “veteran designation” on West Virginia driver’s licenses
For individuals who choose to have the veteran designation on their valid driver’s licenses, DMV is required to verify your status with your DD Form 214, Military Identification Card, Current Military License Plate Registration Card or CSR verification through the vehicle system.
The DMV-DS23P application is available online, but processing of the driver’s license with the veteran designation must be done by visiting a WVDMV office. There is no charge if the designation is the only transaction being sought at the time.
