Covington VA –-(Ammoland.com)- On August 7th and 8th Virginia Citizens Defense League had a booth at the Blacksburg Steppin’ Out festival.
As with the previous years, we handed out over 4,000 stickers, got VA-ALERT sign ups, and handed out a multitude of membership brochures!
And, as usual, we dwarfed the number of yellow “Background Checks Save Lives” stickers being handed out by the Demanding Moms. In fact the Demanding Moms’ booth was usually run by one, or maybe two, people and closed down early each day.
The event went smoothly, with the antis only trying to disrupt us a few times.
The worst was on Friday when one of the antis actually tried to start a fistfight with one of our older volunteers.
The anti was unsuccessful in stirring up trouble and a candidate for Sheriff, who is a Blacksburg police officer, had a booth next to us and came over when he heard the commotion. He told the anti that it was time to move on. I thanked him for stepping in and preventing the anti from actually committing an assault.
EM John Wilburn sent me this in an email: “I have observed more festival attendees open carrying each successive year. The first year we were there, I saw no one but our booth volunteers and the police open carrying. Last year, I saw one or two all weekend.”
“This year, I saw a half dozen on Friday alone. I’d like to think that Virginia Citizens Defense League is having a positive influence in helping gun owners experience more tolerance and feel less stigmatized as they go about their day.”
Virginia Citizens Defense League thanks DBI, the festival coordinators, for their hospitality. They were truly welcoming to us.
