Washington DC – -(Ammoland.com)- During an October 1 2015 appearance on CNN’s Newroom, former US Marshal Art Roderick said the gunman at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College probably chose his target by knowing it was as gun free-zone and therefore “an easy target.”

Roderick’s exact words: “[The gunman] probably knew that the facility was a gun free facility, [which is] an easy target for these kinds of coward individuals. They know they’re not going to get any response unless they happen to run into security or a campus police officer.”

Roderick went on to explain that the key for investigators right now is ascertaining the gunman’s motive and figuring out how he got his weapon(s).

On August 2 Breitbart News reported that eight attacks with firearms in gun free zones in the last eight years resulted in the lost of 105 lives and the wounding of 150 others. Those attacks were on the Lafayette Grand Theater (July 23), Chattanooga (July 16), Fort Hood (April 2, 2014), DC Navy Yard (September 16, 2013), Sandy Hook Elementary (December 14, 2012), Aurora movie theater (July 12, 2012), Fort Hood (November 5, 2009), and Virginia Tech (April 16, 2007)

Schools in Oregon can still ban concealed weapons in buildings, just not on the grounds. This attack occurred in a classroom. At any rate, the status of Umpqua Community College as a gun-free zone is up for debate. Most students polled post-massacre thought the college was indeed a gun-free zone. The current interim President and the past President of the college both commented that the campus was a gun-free zone so if they thought it was, then there is little doubt that the school policy was intended to prohibit concealed carry. Even the Oregon attorney general throught that Umpqua’s weapons… Read more »

Remember if you don’t have concealed carry there are lot of other weapons available to you.

Desks, chairs, fire extinguishers, books, anything you can use to distract and overtake an attacker.

Refuse to be a victim, use anything to fight.

Please note that all public colleges in Oregon can not ban concealed carry with permit.

In the veterans center on campus, at least one military veteran was concealed carrying,
he wanted to go help but was told to stay inside and go on lockdown.

“PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE STAFF AT ARGYLE, TEXAS, ISD ARE ARMED AND MAY USE WHATEVER FORCE IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS.” We can safely bet a deranged shooter will find another target.
WE ARE AT WAR WITH EVIL. WE HAD BEST BE PREPARED FOR THE NEXT ONSLAUGHT!

Schools in Oregon are NOT “gun free zones” and there was at least one licensed to carry person on campus when the incident occurred. Unfortunately the U.S. Marshal obviously assumed that it was & made an inaccurate statement. It is too bad that the licensed to carry person was either not in the area of the shootings or (s)he choose not to act. I believe all the publicity that these spree killers are given is encouraging other angry or unbalanced persons to commit these heinous crimes. I’m all for “freedom of the press” but don’t they bear a moral and… Read more »

Umpqua Community College is a posted Gun Free Zone but allows concealed carry under Oregon law. The college security page states the following: “Possession, use, or threatened use of firearms (including but not limited to BB guns, air guns, water pistols, and paint guns) ammunition, explosives, dangerous chemicals, or any other objects as weapons on college property, except as expressly authorized by law or college regulations, is prohibited. Possession of knives with a blade longer than 4” is prohibited. Brandishing weapons is prohibited. Misuse of personal defensive weapons – e.g., pepper spray, etc. is prohibited. The owner is responsible and… Read more »

So I logged onto that college’s web site, and under prohibited activities, I found this: 19. Possession or use, without written authorization, of firearms, explosives, dangerous chemicals, substances, or any other weapons or destructive devices that are designed to or readily capable of causing physical injury, on College premises, at College-sponsored or supervised functions or at functions sponsored or participated in by the College. So if you want to be nit-picky and say this isn’t a gun free zone, I guess you could, but I think we’re splitting hairs. The guy, who only lives 2 miles away, would have known… Read more »

Would we expect him to choose anything else but a “Gun Free Zone”? Target rich and he is ‘reasonably’ safe.

So the moral of the story is better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6. Unless you advertise you are carrying a concealed weapon who is to know if you are armed? So you survive a slaughter and manage to defeat the suspect. Does anybody really think a prosecutor will file any charges afterwards? And if he does, at least you are alive to answer to the charges.

You don’t realize how anal-retentive prosecutors have gotten these days. They no longer look to see if there was intent to break the law, just that a law was broken and the person must be charged. But I still agree with you.

Prosecutors serve the public and thus are very aware of public opinion. Highly doubtful ANY prosecutor would charge anyone for violating a ‘gun free zone’ law after taking down a criminal and ending a crime spree. The public stink over charges would guarantee no charges would be filed. In other words, you don’t ‘ding’ a hero.
