Indiana -(AmmoLand.com)- Publius Cornelius Tacitus was a Roman senator and historian during the first century whose quotes I have printed in the past.

Though he served in government he was somewhat cynical about the abuse of power. He would have a field day in today’s government. It’s my hope and probably many on this email list that this will be my last letter for the year. I will try not to disappoint.

In the coming weeks and months we will continue to be bombarded with countless ways of accepting “common sense” gun laws and quite possibly be the recipients of such, as Tacitus’ quote points out.

First there are no such things as common sense gun laws, especially in the sense that political and media personnel speak about.

Some examples are the notion of keeping people whose names wind up on a “no fly list” which was created and is maintained by the Terrorist Screening Center (TSC) from owning or purchasing firearms. According to the reports of some of the names that get on that list, such as US senators and representatives along with well known celebrities, and even some members of the Federal Air Marshall Service who had trouble because their names matched those on the list. That should worry people with very common last names.

Last week while I was in Indy I had some officers from the Indiana State Police in my office to discuss a bill I filed concerning the language that appears on the Indiana handgun application and one of them told me they had been put on that list because of their common last name. Fortunately he was able to get his name removed. I’m concerned this policy could be used to create a negative impact on legitimate citizens.

Then there are the surveys being conducted by those who know very little about firearms asking those who likewise know very little and achieve a “research” that more people support more gun control.

An example of this is the media and politicians that never let up on beating the drum on using the phrase “gun show loophole.” Dealers who set up at gun shows require the very same process with the NICS and ATF form 4473 as they do at their gun shops for a firearm transfer. With regard to private sales, that is a transaction that can take place between neighbors or a father who buys his son or daughter a shotgun for a gift. It does not require documentation, however, the seller, by federal law, is required to refuse to sell a firearm to someone they suspect to be prohibited from owning a gun.

Additionally, we have the subject of keeping those with mental or other disorders from obtaining guns. There are checks in place for this, but who can predict the future as to who may be quite sane one day and not so the next.

The bottom line is that in typical fashion today the drive is not to address the nuts and bolts of a problem, whether it’s violence, drug abuse, moral decadence or society meltdown, but to just to do anything regardless of how useless it is.

“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” Tacitus

Margie and I do wish all of you a blessed Merry Christmas and a better New Year.

I read today that the head of the FBI thought anyone could order a gun off the internet.

Have been waiting for politicians to “step UP”. The continuous attack on the “the Right to Keep and Bear Arms” while the present educational systems apparently ignore the subject once called ‘Civics’ are part and parcel to the elimination of our Constitutional Rights by creating and graduating uneducated students!
