Montgomery, AL -(AmmoLand.com)- Dannah Dawson, a 12-year-old from Union Springs, scored a big buck in Bullock County on the first day of the 2015-16 hunting season.
Her mom shared a photo of the young hunter and her 8-point trophy with followers of the Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association’s Facebook page — and won the 2016 Big Buck Photo Contest.
Dannah’s big buck received the most “likes” out of more than 1,300 total votes cast and earned the big prize in the annual contest: a pheasant hunting trip for two provided by Great Southern Outdoors Wildlife Plantation — also in Union Springs.
Dannah’s mom, Shasta, says the entire family enjoys hunting and the outdoors and often takes hunting trips together, including annual goose and duck hunts in Louisiana.
“I am so excited about winning the Big Buck Contest, and I can’t wait to try a new kind of hunting — pheasant hunting!” Dannah said.
Dannah’s winning buck was taken on a 90-yard shot from a box stand overlooking a green field surrounded by hardwoods in the Perote community, south of Union Springs and northeast of Troy. The youngster, who was in the deer stand with her older brother, said after an uneventful wait, the woods finally came alive with the 8-point, a herd of eight does and another buck.
“I wasn’t sure who was more nervous before the shot or more excited after the shot,” Dannah said, “but there was a lot of high-fiving and big smiles in that box stand that day.”
The seventh-grader at Pike Liberal Arts School in Troy said a majority of her class has its own friendly “big buck competition,” and her big shot gave her the early bragging rights.
Dannah and her father, Daniel, have already scheduled their pheasant hunt at Great Southern Outdoors for this fall.
