GENESEO, IL, May 4, 2016 (AmmoLand) – Springfield Armory is pleased to announce that effective April 7, 2016, a special edition of the XD-S 9mm was approved by the New York City Police Department. Off-duty uniformed officers are now able to select the XD-S 9mm pistol as their carry gun of choice.

The New York City Police Department wanted to afford off-duty officers with a pistol option that provided maximum concealment with absolute reliability. As a single-stack 9mm pistol with superior ergonomic features, the XD-S fit the bill for concealment and controllability. With the new approval, NYPD officers may also carry the XD-S 9mm NYPD Model as a backup gun while on duty as well.

The NYPD Firearms and Tactics Unit worked in cooperation with the Springfield Armory engineering and design teams to develop a special edition of the popular XD-S carry pistol that conforms to the exact requirements of the NYPD. After passing the department’s rigorous testing procedures, the Springfield Armory XD-S gained acceptance for use with no performance modifications and only minor adjustments to meet NYPD policy guidelines.

“We’re pleased that we were able to work with the team in the Firearms Training Section to meet specific needs of the department,” stated Dennis Reese, CEO, Springfield Armory. “Our engineering team developed a new disconnector and grip safety spring that adjusts the trigger pull weight of the XD-S to the specific policy requirements of the NYPD. The concealed carry community has responded to the XD-S with overwhelming approval so we’re pleased that law enforcement officers can use it too.”

The NYPD-approved XD-S pistol includes many of the same features that have made the handgun so popular in the broader concealed carry market. At just .9-inches wide, the XD-S is easy to carry and conceal. The NYPD special edition pistol comes with three 9mm magazines including a seven-round flush model and two eight-round extended magazines. Like the commercial XD-S the NYPD model includes a 3.3-inch hammer forged carbon steel barrel treated with Melonite. With the flush magazine installed, the overall weight of the pistol is 23 ounces.

The Springfield Armory Law Enforcement team completed the XD-S Armorer’s Training Program April 9th, marking the official launch of the program to all uniformed officers. A detailed armorer’s manual produced by Springfield Armory enables the NYPD Firearms Training Section and other law enforcement agencies to expand training internally after the launch event.

Now used for on and off duty carry at hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country, The New York Police Department is the latest law enforcement agency to recognize the reliability and functional benefits of the XD, XD(M), and XD-S handgun platform.

The NYPD XD-S is available now to qualified officers through local law enforcement dealers as model number XDS9339BNYPD.

About Springfield Armory
“The First Name in American Firearms,” Springfield Armory was founded in 1777, when George Washington ordered the creation of an armory to store ammunition and gun carriages during the American Revolution. In 1794, the armory began to manufacture muskets and spent the next 150 years supplying firearms for every major American conflict. The original armory closed in 1968. In 1974, the Reese family took ownership of the Springfield Armory name and began making the M1A rifle. Today, Springfield Armory develops many products loyal to the company’s heritage, like the 1911 pistol, while ensuring its future with innovative products, including the XD, XD Mod.2 XD(M) and XD-S polymer pistols.

Bernie Goetz had the right idea. He shouldn’t have turned himself in.

If the people in NYC would stop electing anti second amendment mayor’s and other anti gun people; people in the city would be able to own and carry a gun. The only thing the police department does is decide who gets a permit for a handgun and a permit for a shotgun. Yes, people in the city have to get permission for even a shotgun. How this is not unconstitutional is be on me. Our founding fathers must be rolling over in their grave to see how cities and states like NY and CA have taken away peoples GOD given… Read more »

You are totally uninformed. Why should nyc permits be honored anywhere in New York State but New York City won’t honor any other permit Issued anywhere else in New York State. The New York State penal code does not specify any kind of sportsmen permit as is being now issued in Nassau county, Suffolk county and I believe Westchester County. These so called Sportsmens permits were invented by the Nassau and Suffolk police commissioners in the 1980’s to undermine the New York State Penal Code which specified only residence, business and full carry permits. Back then Carry permits in New… Read more »

Don’t confuse NYC with NYS. ANY law abiding citizen north of the city can get a carry permit and own this. NYC just gives residence only permits. And Long Island will give you a sportsman permit.

How come all NYPD certified official firearms aren’t required to use “smart” technology?
That way a dropped gun or gun taken away from an officer in a scuffle could not be used by a perp.
Would not that make everyone safer?

Would I be correct in saying your comment was voiced in the height of sarcasm?

That’s why they are all double action weapons since 88 from revolver to 9 mm pistols. They will never use anything involving electronics cost to much money. even the body cams are the cheap bargain basement ones. They ll never spend the money .

Whodaty

You would be very correct.

Apparently the Bloomsburg clan have been too busy working out of state. This is a gun with no safety switch. How ever will they keep those evil guns from springing to life and shooting children?

I carry the XDs, I like it, but due to the difficult and annoying ambi mag release I would not recommend this gun to anyone.

DOC

Tex, are you really gripping sanity? Police Officers are state certified 24/7. You want your meth-head plumber carrying? If you ever need a uniform and don’t recognize an off-duty, call the frigging ghostbusters, chump.

Your reply has no basis in reality. I’m guessing you live in NY and not in a State where you can actually exercise your right to self defense?

Vanns40

This is where we, as gun owners, can make a difference. Call Springfield and make it very clear that you will never support a company that sells to police in a State that restricts the Second Amendment Rights of its citizens. Ronnie Barrett did it, so can we. We buy a lot more firearms than all police and military combined. We can stop this if we simply use our numbers.

I was a Sgt. in the NYPD and I believe in the 2A just like you. I don’t feel sorry for the people in NYC for not being able to carry. They voted for these a$$holes who made it this way all so they could feel protected when the politicians knew that these laws they were passing were BS. The mayor now runs around telling not only his son to fear the police but everyone else should too. When the murder rate was 2200 a year that was when the people of NY wanted crime to stop. When the drug… Read more »

Meanwhile, every John Q. Public who has the misfortune of living in NYC cannot have any gun to carry for personal protection.

TEX

NYPD approves what officers can carry off-duty ? Sounds about right ! Springfield Armory should be more concerned about how New York City treats law-abiding civilians wanting to exercise their 2A rights, than what off-duty cops carry. If law-abiding civilians without a badge can’t own it why should cops. Cops are civilians too.

TEX IN NY THE STATE CONSTITUTION OVERIDES ANY YOUR SECOND AMENDMANT RIGHTS

Parnell

With the crappy NY trigger which negates the advantages of the gun?
