Comey & The Saturday Night Massacre

USA –  -(Ammoland.com)- History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce, said Marx.

On publication day of my memoir of Richard Nixon's White House, President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Instantly, the media cried “Nixonian,” comparing it to the 1973 Saturday Night Massacre.

Yet, the differences are stark.

The resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General Bill Ruckelshaus and the firing of Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox came in the middle of an East-West crisis.

On Oct. 6, 1973, the high holy day of Yom Kippur, in a surprise attack, Egyptian troops crossed the Suez Canal and breached Israel's Bar Lev Line. Syria attacked on the Golan Heights.

Within days, 1,000 Israeli soldiers were dead, hundreds of tanks destroyed, dozens of planes downed by Soviet surface-to-air missiles. As Egypt's army broke through in the Sinai, there came reports that Moshe Dayan was arming Israeli F-4s with nuclear weapons.

“This is the end of the Third Temple,” Dayan was quoted.

Nixon ordered every U.S. transport that could fly to deliver tanks and planes to Israel. Gen. Ariel Sharon crossed the Canal to the west and rolled north to cut off and kill the Egyptian 3rd army in Sinai.

The Gulf Arabs declared an oil embargo of the United States.

We got reports that nuclear-capable Russian ships were moving through the Dardanelles and Soviet airborne divisions were moving to airfields. U.S. nuclear forces were put on heightened alert.

On Oct. 10, another blow had befallen Nixon's White House. Vice President Agnew pleaded nolo contendere to tax evasion and resigned.

Nixon immediately named Gerald Ford to replace him.

It was in this environment, with Henry Kissinger in Moscow trying to negotiate a ceasefire in the Mideast, that Cox refused to accept a compromise deal that would give him verified summaries of Nixon's tapes, but not actual tapes. Democrat Senators Sam Ervin and John Stennis had accepted this compromise, as had Richardson, or so we believed.

Nixon had no choice. As he told me, he could not, in this Cold War crisis, have Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev see him back down in the face of defiance by one of his own Cabinet appointees.

If he had to, Nixon told me, he would reach down to a GS-7 at Justice to fire Cox: “We can't have that viper sleeping in the bed with us.”

That Saturday night, I told friends, next week will bring resolutions of impeachment in the House. And so it did.

How do Nixon and Trump's actions differ?

Where Nixon decapitated his Justice Department and shut down the special prosecutor's office, Trump simply fired an FBI director who agreed that Trump had every right to do so.

By October 1973, with two dozen Nixon White House, Cabinet and campaign officers convicted or facing indictment and trial, we were steeped in the worst political scandal in U.S. history.

Nothing comparable exists today.

But if President Trump is enraged, he has every right to be.

Since July, the FBI has been investigating alleged Trump campaign collusion with Putin's Russia to hack the DNC and John Podesta's email accounts — and produced zilch. As of January, ex-CIA Director Mike Morell and ex-DNI James Clapper said no collusion had been found.

Yet every day we hear Democrats and the media bray about a Putin-Trump connection and Russian “control” of the president.

In the early 1950s, they had a term for this. It was called McCarthyism, and its greatest practitioners invariably turned out to be those who had invented the term.

“Justice delayed is justice denied!” applies to presidents, too.

Trump has been under a cloud of a “Russian connection” to him and his campaign for nearly a year. Yet no hard evidence of Trump-Russia collusion in the election has been produced.

Is not the endless airing of unproven allegations inherently un-American?

In 1973, NBC's John Chancellor suggested the ouster of Richardson, Ruckelshaus and Cox was the “most serious constitutional crisis” in U.S. history, passing over the secession of 11 Southern states and a Civil War that cost 620,000 lives. One London reporter said that “the whiff of the Gestapo was in the clear October air.”

We see a similar hysteria rising today.

Yet that was not a constitutional crisis then, and the mandated early retirement of Jim Comey is not a constitutional crisis now.

And that the mainstream media are equating “Russia-gate” and Watergate tells you what is afoot.

Trump is hated by this city, which gave him 4 percent of its votes, as much as Nixon was. And the deep-state determination to bring him down is as great as it was with Nixon.

By 1968, the liberal establishment had lost the mandate it had held since 1933, but not lost its ability to wound and kill presidents.

Though Nixon won 49 states, that establishment took him down. Though Ronald Reagan won 49 states, that establishment almost took him down in the Iran-Contra affair.

And that is the end they have in mind for President Trump.

    1. Donald Trump won by stating his case to the American voter … not by bloodshed, riots or intimidation! What’s the problem losers?

    2. I am so tired of seeing CNN on a witch hunt for President Trump . Everyday that scumbag Cuomo or whatever his name is tries to get some dirt on Trump . Like he is some great investigator. I think the people that voted for President Trump should completely ignore CNN news , never watch them on TV , never say the name of CNN , never talk to a scumbag CNN lie reporter , totally phase them out of existence in this country . I would at least like to see President Trump pass the pro gun rights of all Americans before he says he’s had enough of the news media scumbags and he’s tired of staying in that section 8 White House . Do your best Mr. Trump to save our Civil Rights before the retarded liberals destroy them any further !!!!!

      1. I stopped watching mainstream TeeVee back in 1972. Life has been MUCH more enjoyable since then. And less tressful. Been hearing about the soon coming ice age, the comet that was to smash earth to bits, billions dying of starvation by 1978, Russia nuking the entire planet in 1973, ebola taking out ninety percent of the world in 1987, every computer on the planet crashing (except my Mac) in 2000, no more petroleum so all our cars will have to be sent to China to get melted down to make toasters, by 1986, Jesus returning in 1995, and you all know more of those fairytales.

Now we KNOW they’ve been lying dupes for the shadow goernment for two generations why give them a nickel any more?

    3. When you tell a lie enough times to enough people, the lie becomes the truth. Democrats/socialists/progressives/communists will say and do anything to protect and increase their turf – at the expense of the country and its population. Don’t believe me, believe your own eyes and ears by getting truth you can’t get at the MSM. Want an example? If Obamacare is so great, why haven’t muslims and the congress been required to obtain their health insurance there? If the congress required health insurance from obamacare, do you believe they would all be standing around twiddling their thumbs while obamacare collapsed? Another example: Why would so many foreign entities make massive contributions to the clinton foundation if not for access to the Secretary of State? I think that is called influence peddling, bribery and extortion. Isn’t that against the law? Why no special prosecutor? Why no special prosecutor to get the “real” facts on the illegal storage and dissemination of classified information that has jeopardized the national security?

      1. Herb, you are right on about the saying or doing anything. Fortunately, We the People did not believe the democrat lie about some vague connection to some unknown Russian, before the election, on election day, and at no time since election day. The more that the democrats/socialists/progressives/communist and the msm push this obvious fraud, the more the ordinary Americans see behind the democrat mask and realize the truth.

    4. Show me one Republican President since WWII who hasn’t been attacked by Democrats in an effort to discredit him and topple his administration. Show me one Democratic President who hasn’t be hailed as a conquering hero and lifted up to near-sainthood status. The Democrats and the Washington power players may have lost legislative seats and control of Congress, but they have not lost the ability to destroy a President or tear apart this Nation. They have tried for decades to gain complete control, either through direct political power or subversion. That goal has not changed.

    5. It was foolish to fire Comey while he was out of town–just looks really bad and chicken (because it is). Years ago one of the major handgun companies (foreign owned) fired their national sales manager by remote control while he was at the SHOT Show. Derisive response spread through the show like wildfire. This tactic is not the right thing to do. Get them home and then let them go–save them some dignity and it may not create a real bitter enemy–who is in the know.

      1. I thought that it was just terrific and entertaining that Comey had to find his own way home. Comey forgot that he sits at the pleasure of president. Comey was part of Barry Soetoro’s shadow government. Comey was a leaker. Comey has protected the Clintons from prosecution, twice. Comey’s relatives have been the beneficiaries of mysterious long term “loans” and “jobs on boards of directors, that they are clearly not qualified for. Comey was one of the most sharp toothed monsters in the swamp. Comey misused the Fat Boy Institute for his own purposes and the defend political allies. Comey is the very paradigm of Washington corruptness.
The more like Comey that president Trump fires the better for America. That is why we elected Trump, and that is why both parties are terrified.

        1. And WildBill, the back stabbing traitor Mr. Comey, in my opinion, got off way to easy, considering your short list above including not only his partisanship but perhaps treason, with just “losing” his holier than tho job with all its benefits when actually handcuffs would have been totally appropriate.

      2. When that Stater has you in his sights, does he stop and send you a text asking if this is a convenient or appropriate time to accost you? How about when the Doc has some bad news? Then why should Comey’s Boss have to wait until a “convenient” or “apropriate” time to get told he’s done? When its time to fire someone, FIRE THEM before they can do any more damage. This pussyfooting nonsense is counter productive and dangerous. A strong leader will not fear or hesitate to take appropriate action that hurts one individual when the whole is at stake. His responsibility is not to the delicate individual, but to the entire group or operation.

    6. I really dont care where Comey was when President Trump fired him. Comey was in someone’s pocket. Remember he blasted HRC for the e-mail/document scandel and then refused to charge her with the crime! Comey was not doing his job. Got fired. End of the real story. However the fake news will roll on!

      1. @Chuck, You are quite right and lest we forget, twenty years ago, James Comey was the Deputy Special Counsel on the Senate Whitewater Investigation looking into the conduct of President Bill Clinton and first lady Hillary Clinton. The investigation was to determine whether Bill Clinton used his political position as governor of Arkansas (in the 1980’s) to push through an illegal loan to benefit Bill and Hillary’s business partner in Whitewater.
Several people involved in Whitewater went to jail, but no criminal prosecution was in the cards for Bill and Hillary. Remember James Comey was the one who said there was not enough evidence, in his opinion, against the Clintons.

The pardon of billionaire Marc Rich (who traded illegally with America’s enemies including Iran) by President Bill Clinton was something that everyone knew reeked of impropriety after learning that Rich’s wife donated $450,000 to the Clinton Library. James Comey oversaw investigations of the pardon matters, as well.

Unbelievably, James Comey recommend not charging the Hillary Clinton for evading the law, by using a private server while she was Sec. of State. The Clinton’s have controlled Comey for decades.

        1. Notice how the President fired Comey when Comey was 3,000 miles away from his office, that Comey had no inkling he was being cut, that all his files, computers, and everything in his office were seized by AG Sessions and the justice department. This was not a violation of protocol, it was tactical.

Trump compartmentalized the strike and did not inform any of his White House “staff” to prevent leaks. He emasculated Comey and the swamp denizens by geting the surveillance tapes from the seizure of Comey’s office. That told Comey and his handlers that Trump’s DOJ has the goods on them. This was a brilliant move at exactly the right time against corrupt people infesting our government.

The swamp is on notice that the President is on to them, they are sweating bullets because their criminal games of corruption are being pursued and they know it. They are screaming and ranting because they are desperate.

          1. Old Old Confused Bill, there you go again with your strategery and get it completely, hopelessly wrong, again.

Trump simply fired Comey from distance because he is a rank coward, and he knows that he, himself, is guilty and has been found out. He is scrambling and doing his best to run as far from this scandal as possible. Tactical? Brilliant? Boy, you really are not Colonel material at all, are you? It is Trump who is desperate, you idiot.

Just heard that Flynn is pleading the 5th. It just gets better for you, doesn’t it?

    7. lol. You losers are like Trump; divorced from reality. Obama told him it was a hard job and the smug tosser just grinned from ear to ear, thinking he was so much smarter. Wotcha gonna do when the Russia connection is revealed? Just ignore it? Blame it on his staff? Cry into your beer? Go running to Rush Limbaugh for an answer? As always with you chumps, no intellectual honesty.

            1. @XXTSnot, At the risk of being obvious, I bet you know a lot about letting Russians in the back door, the front door, and how much to charge for that.

            2. Old Useless Bill,
As you are the proprietor of the largest bunny ranch in Texas, you would know better than anyone about rates. Russians are especially welcome, and can even pay in rubles. These will come in handy when your Russian overlords take over the country, traitor!

            3. Colon Girl, it seems that you just know one sentence. Hardly worth stepping out of the kitchen for that, was it?

    8. Yo Wild Bill, do you think it is a coincidence that GeeBud dropped by the wayside and T.S. showed up? And now, TS is AWOL and XX is here. Interesting, and it proves my theory that liberals such as them are a genetically inferior species of hominid destined to become extinct. I just wish there was a way to speed up the process.

      1. @Ranger 1, your instincts are correct. We got XX to admit that he is Teen Snot. He could have changed his style of writing, and his attitude, and become a member of the community but he was unable to change his spots. How have you all been?

        1. TS was censored and blocked because of Old Useless Bill’s crying and whining. The little old b#tch cried to the mods for rescue. So much for the tough guy military image, eh Old Useless Bill? Maybe that was why you never made Colonel-because you were a worthless snitch, running around telling tales.

For the record, I have never claimed to be anyone else despite Old Useless Bill’s hysterical accusations. The poor little buttercup couldn’t take it any more.

          1. xx spews another load of liberal whiney idiocy as usual; Another liberal troll to be blocked for a lack of common sense and intelligence.

            1. I can’t decide whether it’s you or OldVet who wins the award for the most inane and boorring “contributor” to this forum. You just say the same thing over and over again; sometimes with CAPS FOR EMPHASIS!!! in screaming harpy fashion. Talking of fashion; I bet money you have an 80s hairstyle. If you have a political issue you want to debate, let’s hear it or just go back to frightening the neighborhood children.

            2. @Talks Spurious, Lets ask the mods if I complained about anyone. Now, as to your accusation of uselessness, in addition to adding to the defense of the nation, raising food for the people of this great country, keeping a stopper in your bottle of vomit, I also make very high quality ammunition. Now, for the fifth time… What do you do for the people of this great country?
PS In your great wisdom and experience do you think that there is a neighborhood around a ranch? How can one know so little about the world.

          2. @Extra, Extra, Teen Snot, What would you know about making Colonel, you can’t even make private! So the owners of this site blocked you as your TS persona, and that is why you call yourself xx, now. The story is coming out! For the record, I did not complain about you, but you deserve everything that you get.

            1. Old Useless Bill, you complained like a whiny 14 year old schoolgirl, and you know it. There is no story to come out, you old drama queen. Stop flapping.

    9. Xx betcha Wild Bill would rub ur nose in it if he laid hands on you. Any one want to bet? Little fellas like xx talk big or as we say in Texas he is all hat and no cattle! Poor little feller.

      1. Chuckie Cheeseball, you don’t know sh%t about me, do you? Actually, you Texan rednecks are the ones who boast the most. Pride comes before the fall.

        1. @Extra Teen Extra Snot, Actually we know quite a lot about you from your writings. I know how you think, and that is probably enough, but I also observe, your lack of education, lack of experience, and lack of ability to detach yourself from the propaganda that you have grown up on. Finally, I see that you are willing to insult the population of a whole state.

            1. XX… it is trash like you that we DNR at our medical clinic outside of Del Rio…. you will surely code due to the fentanyl laced cocaine that you have been smoking..
You sound just like the former GeeBud and TS.
