USA –  -( “They had found a leader, Robert E. Lee — and what a leader! … No military leader since Napoleon has aroused such enthusiastic devotion among troops as did Lee when he reviewed them on his horse Traveller.”

So wrote Samuel Eliot Morison in his magisterial “The Oxford History of the American People” in 1965.

First in his class at West Point, hero of the Mexican War, Lee was the man to whom President Lincoln turned to lead his army. But when Virginia seceded, Lee would not lift up his sword against his own people, and chose to defend his home state rather than wage war upon her.

This veneration of Lee, wrote Richard Weaver, “appears in the saying attributed to a Confederate soldier, ‘The rest of us may have … descended from monkeys, but it took a God to make Marse Robert.'”

Growing up after World War II, this was accepted history.

Yet, on the militant left today, the name Lee evokes raw hatred and howls of “racist and traitor.” A clamor has arisen to have all statues of him and all Confederate soldiers and statesmen pulled down from their pedestals and put in museums or tossed onto trash piles.

What has changed since 1965?

It is not history. There have been no great new discoveries about Lee.

What has changed is America herself. She is not the same country. We have passed through a great social, cultural and moral revolution that has left us irretrievably divided on separate shores.

And the politicians are in panic.

Two years ago, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe called the giant statues of Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson on Richmond's Monument Avenue “parts of our heritage.” After Charlottesville, New York-born-and-bred McAuliffe, entertaining higher ambitions, went full scalawag, demanding the statues be pulled down as “flashpoints for hatred, division, and violence.”

Who hates the statues, Terry? Who's going to cause the violence? Answer: The Democratic left whom Terry must now appease.

McAuliffe is echoed by Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, the Democratic candidate in November to succeed McAuliffe. GOP nominee Ed Gillespie wants Monument Avenue left alone.

The election is the place to decide this, but the left will not wait.

In Durham, North Carolina, our Taliban smashed the statue of a Confederate soldier. Near the entrance of Duke University Chapel, a statue of Lee has been defaced, the nose broken off.

Wednesday at dawn, Baltimore carried out a cultural cleansing by taking down statues of Lee and Maryland Chief Justice Roger Taney who wrote the Dred Scott decision and opposed Lincoln's suspension of the right of habeas corpus.

Like ISIS, which smashed the storied ruins of Palmyra, and the al-Qaida rebels who ravaged the fabled Saharan city of Timbuktu, the new barbarism has come to America. This is going to become a blazing issue, not only between but within the parties.

For there are 10 Confederates in Statuary Hall in the Capitol, among them Lee, Georgia's Alexander Stephens, vice president to Jefferson Davis, and Davis himself. The Black Caucus wants them gone.

Mount Rushmore-sized carvings of Lee, Jackson and Davis are on Stone Mountain, Georgia. Are they to be blasted off?

There are countless universities, colleges and high schools like Washington & Lee named for Confederate statesmen and soldiers. Across the Potomac from D.C. are Jefferson Davis Highway and Leesburg Pike to Leesburg itself, 25 miles north. Are all highways, streets, towns and counties named for Confederates to be renamed? What about Fort Bragg?

On every Civil War battlefield, there are monuments to the Southern fallen. Gettysburg has hundreds of memorials, statues and markers. But if, as the left insists we accept, the Confederates were traitors trying to tear America apart to preserve an evil system, upon what ground do Democrats stand to resist the radical left's demands?

What do we do with those battlefields where Confederates were victorious: Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville?

“Where does this all end?” President Trump asked.

It doesn't. Not until America's histories and biographies are burned and new texts written to Nazify Lee, Jackson, Davis and all the rest, will a newly indoctrinated generation of Americans accede to this demand to tear down and destroy what their fathers cherished.

And once all the Confederates are gone, one must begin with the explorers, and then the slave owners like Presidents Washington, Jefferson and Madison, who seceded from slave-free Britain. White supremacists all.

Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay of Kentucky and John Calhoun must swiftly follow.

Then there are all those segregationists. From 1865 to 1965, virtually all of the great Southern senators were white supremacists.

In the first half of the 20th century, Woodrow Wilson and FDR carried all 11 states of a rigidly segregationist South all six times they ran, and FDR rewarded Dixie by putting a Klansman on the Supreme Court.

While easy for Republicans to wash their hands of such odious elements as Nazis in Charlottesville, will they take up the defense of the monuments and statues that have defined our history, or capitulate to the icon-smashers?

In this Second American Civil War, whose side are you on?

    1. “All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame. Who fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing? Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen are only human. “-Isaiah 44:9-20

      1. Kiven, you seem to forget that it was but a few short years earlier that the Northern states also had slavery, and when our founding fathers proclaimed that all men are created equal, that many of them were slaveholders.

Lincoln didn’t start the war to free the slaves, he started it to “preserve the Union”. His Emancipation Proclamation freed no slaves, since it only applied to areas outside of Union control. If he really wanted to free the slaves, why didn’t his EO free them in the slave states that didn’t secede? He also wanted to ship all the former black slaves to Africa.

Nazis were socialists and the KKK was formed by Democrats to keep the blacks subjugated. They now do that with social programs.

Ever heard of the War of Northern Aggression and states rights? Even Jefferson Davis knew the slave economy was coming to an end. Technology was making them archaic. That’s why the industrial North gave up slavery, though that didn’t stop their slave trading and transportation of them. Jefferson Davis wanted time to transition their economy and to teach the former slaves how to read and write and teach them a trade, so they could be self-sufficient.

Most Southerners didn’t ow slaves, and certainly would not have been fighting for it. Their letters home speak nothing of that being the reasons for their fighting. Lee refused the leadership of the Union forces because he didn’t want to fight against his people. He wasn’t fighting for slavery.

The extremists on both sides in C’ville, do not represent but a very small minority, I would even postulate that they only represented themselves. Many people believe the statues should stand; it’s not about slavery, but about honoring those that fought, many being ancestors of those still living in those same towns and cities. Lee was a well-respected general, before, during, and after the war, as were many others, which is why they have monuments.

    2. sounds nice. stop pandering to radical negros. stop cuddling delusional, communist, white punks (wiggers). WE SHOULD HAVE ARMED GUARDS ON EVERY HISTORICAL OBJECT. however it needs to be ordered by homeland security and President Trump. we did this after 9/11. this is terrorist act, to get their cause in the media. this is the first rule about terrorism that is why a terrorist will claim responsibility for the terrorist action. WAKE UP .YOU ARE DOING THE TERRORISTS WORK. THEY ARE WINNING WITH EVERY HISTORICAL OBJECT TAKEN DOWN

    3. History is just that History ! .
Like it or not it’s ours period .
Ya can’t change it , Ya can’t hide it .
But you can learn from it , ( if they each about it )
(fair and honestly ) With all that has and is going on
over it you would think all these smart @$$’s that preach
and condemn have learned something from that history.
We may be Doomed to repeat it !!

      1. They are the history they are trying to erase. The liberal Democrats were the majority of the slave owners, the KKK, and the supporters and passers of Jim Crow laws. Of course tbey want people to forget.

    4. It’s too bad people didn’t listen to the words of Robert E. Lee with regard to Civil War memorials. He felt it was a bad idea that would remind people of their personal scars and make it difficult to reunite the nation. My ancestors include one cavalryman who rode with J.E.B. Stuart and three other of his brothers who were Confederate artillerymen, two of whom died in Union prison camps. My family owned the “surrender triangle” at Appomattox, where the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia stacked their arms after the surrender. I oppose the idea of destroying monuments and changing names, not out of southern pride or respect for national history, but because we really can’t afford the cost of all the destruction when the federal government already continues to deficit spend, and states are struggling with covering the cost of education, medical care, and collapsing infrastructure.

    5. The Gov. of Virginia was Clintons “bagman” and money handler, he is nothing but a corrupt carpetbagger elected by the liberal leeches from DC who live in northern VA.

    6. These people are race baiters and anarchist. They thrive on it to give meaning to their sordid lives. They have no interest in building our country but only desire to bring it down. All are socialist who have no remembrance of history and how their type of thinking has fathered nations like Russia and people like Hitler and Mussolini. If they spent as much time and trouble building a business or getting an education as they do blaming others for their troubles, they might just see some positive results. Instead they think someone owes them a living and believe rioting and mayhem will bring them what they want. Try going to Chicago and riot in the streets demanding they lower their ever rising murder rates. That would be a worth cause.

      1. I think that the thing that most infuriates the left about the Confederacy is that they dared to defy the federal government. They are all about giving power to the government they would controle.

    7. I did not know that the Gov. of VA. came from N.Y. Maybe voters might want to put a STOP to that happening? Just look at N.Y. The Clintons move in and the first thing they do ,is RUN FOR OFFICE. I bet if you check other (dem.) states you will find the same thing . Just look @ the west coast. If your not BORN IN THE STATE ,YOU CAN’T RUN FOR OFFICE.

      1. It is the non-thinking, non-caring voters who elect non-natives to office. Look at New Mexico. Governor Bill Richardson was born in California, spent his early years on Mexico and grew up in Massachusetts. He never lived in New Mexico until he decided to run for Governor and the idiots in New Mexico elected him because he was 1/2 Hispanic. The worst governor since Tony Anaya and New Mexico deserved them both. Richardson changed the highway signs to bi-lingual and gave driver’s licenses to illegals which allowed them to get social security cards which allowed them to register to vote, which got him a second term. Most states get what they deserve because the voters are “given” only 2 choices as to who they can elect, just like the Federal elections. Sadly the choices are overwhelmingly a matter of the lesser of two evils, or choosing to be assaulted with a baseball bat or iron pipe. It’s not much of a democratic process when someone or some group who are not elected, but chosen by who has paid the most money, decides who can run in the primaries or who will be on the ballot.
