Talking to the Left on Gun Rights – My Head Still Hurts

Gun Control Won’t Work, So We Need More Gun Control
Gun Control Won’t Work, So We Need More Gun Control

Ammoland Shooting SportsU.S.A.-(Ammoland.com)- I admit my guilt, I take calls and interviews from/with gun control groups to explain how gun owners feel about firearms’ related issues. Right after the Las Vegas shooting I was called twice and swapped e-mails with several authors from one of the most active gun control websites. I found them to be nice people, and a few even dedicated to fairness, but buy, and large I was in disagreement with their sentiments and their views. On firearms and the NRA, they are naive.

They use the name NRA as their collective name for all things pro-gun owner rights. They see the NRA as a deep dark, secretive organization that is a front for gun manufacturers and that acts as the media arm of the GOP. If a topic or article can be spun to make the NRA look bad, they do. If they cannot blame the NRA, they blame DJT. Their collective view of who and what the NRA is is bizarre to anyone who knows the organization.

So you want some examples? Well, here they are.

When Jeff Session was a US Attorney, he prosecuted convicted felons, who were arrested with firearms on them and added a gun possession charge to their sentencing. This added to their time in jail. The left thinks this is wrong as it puts more minorities in prison and that this is a racist policy. Gun owners say get armed felons off the street.

U.S. Incarceration Rates by Race and Ethnicity, 2010
U.S. Incarceration Rates by Race and Ethnicity, 2010

They say cracking down on drugs will not reduce gun violence. Forgetting the FBI UCR will tell you 86% of ALL shooting deaths are gang and drug-related. (That’s the FBI’s Unified Crime Report)

They rightly point out that 25% of the gun used in shooting in Chicago were sold by ten dealers, and they want those dealers forced out of business. Forgetting the fact that the criminals will just find another source and that the person doing the straw purchase is the real criminal, not the gun dealer. I’d suggest the dealers work with the AFT to put the straw purchasers in jail. Oops… there’s that complaint again that the right just wants to jail black men. What they get wrong is that we want criminals jailed, their race does not matter to us.

The last issue is one that just makes me laugh. The NRA is pushing Carry Guard; that is liability insurance for gun owners. The left has often DEMANDED all gun owners have liability insurance. So here you have the NRA promoting a program EXACTLY like the one the left has called for and what does the anti-gun-left do? Complain about the NRA and their promoting liability insurance for gun owners.

It is not about the insurance; it is about bashing the NRA.

It is not about getting armed felons off the street; it is about not putting minorities in prison.

It is not about stopping illegal firearm purchases; it is about closing gun stores.

At almost every turn it is about supporting a liberal agenda by bashing the NRA.

There is no act the NRA could ever do that would be positive that would not be twisted or ignored by this group. They don’t even know who the NRA is!

So my dear friends on the left here are the facts you ignore.

53% of all shooting deaths are by black men under 30. That’s 3% of the population doing more than ½ the killing.

86% of ALL shootings are gang and drug-related.

U.S. Homicide Gun Deaths per 1 million people ages 15-34 in 2014
U.S. Homicide Gun Deaths per 1 million people ages 15-34 in 2014

The cause of gun violence is the failure of the large urban centers to provide jobs and a future for inner city youth, the breakdown of the family and failed schools. These larger cities’ failure, all run by you lefties, is the cause of most of the shooting in the country. Gun violence is a black problem in America, an inner-city problem. For most of America gun violence is what we see on the news.

Without these urban killings, the US would look like Iceland or Switzerland matching their murder rate.
Some of you on the left do what you do to save lives, and you should come over to our side. The rest of you are just left-wing activists using the NRA as a whipping boy.

To us – ALL LIVES MATTER. Not just white people. Got it?

Unemployment is as low as it’s been in 17 years
Unemployment is as low as it’s been in 17 years

The table to the left. JOBS and future will reduce inner-city shooting. One of you lefties should be saying “Thank You” to Donald Trump. Unemployment is as low as it’s been in 17 years!

But that is not what it is about, is it? It is about politics for you on the left, not making America strong or creating jobs for EVERYONE!

We all agree that more can be done to protect women and children. That’s why we have Eddie Eagle and Women on Target and Refuse to be a Victim from the NRA. You on the left may not agree with us; you may even see some nefarious evil plan in these actions. I say telling children to “Stop” “Leave the area” “Tell an Adult” as good things to teach a child when they find a gun.

Lastly…I have a young woman student who’s abusive ex-boyfriend has threatened her and violated a restraining order. There are locks and alarms on her doors and windows; she’s gone through the “Refuse to be a Victim” course to help to keep her safe. There is a lock on her bedroom door, and a high-powered flashlight and charged cellphone next to her bed. There is also a gun on her nightstand. The average police response time is a fast 8 minutes in her community. She’d be dead by the time the police arrive without her having a gun. He doesn’t need a gun to kill her; he’s 2X her size. Nothing the anti-gun left offers could save her life. NOTHING! But we can, the NRA and American gun owners can. That is empowering women.

God made men and women, Samuel Colt made women equal.

    1. “It is not about the insurance; it is about bashing the NRA.”

No, it’s about arbitrary power or, in the cases of most leftists, vicarious arbitrary power. You can not reason with these people, but you can teach them to fear.

    2. A female parent and a male parent in the house makes a world of difference in the outcome of the child. A guy spending the night then gone in the morning does nothing for the impressive child. It would be interesting to see a chart that shows two parent homes and one parent homes of blacks, hispanics and whites and the incarceration rates and deaths of each. I think I know the answer without seeing a chart.

      1. I’m just curious what everyone’s thoughts be i’m having every newly sold gun chipped
So law enforcement con track each weapon if and when they are reported stolen.

    3. the left continues to rant on “gun violence” , what is that exactly ? is it the same as truck violence or car violence , knife/machete violence or any thing else someone uses to commit murder &mayhem ? do all these things just suddenly acquire an evil sentience and decide to commit said murder& mayhem all on their own without a human being picking one of there things up ? SHOW ME JUST ONE INCIDENT WHERE AN OBJECT SUDDENLY COMMITS AN ACT OF HORROR WITHOUT A HUMAN WEILDING SAID OBJECT ! JUST ONE !You can’t can YOU ? So why is a tool like a gun so demonized by you leftists ? Or all of you the epitome of a BOX of ROCKS ?

    4. I hate to say this, but these left wing guns nuts need to be held up or impacted by a non-law abiding gun carrying person, so they see first hand just how bad it is in the U.S. There is not one gun law that could be legislated to prevent future gun incidences. Lets cite the gun seizure in Australia. Many people I know down there still have plenty of uguns. Looks at Chicago will the strictest guns laws in the U.S. Great for the criminals, since the law-abiding people who need to protect themselves are challenged in doing just that. I feel that many of these are mental health challenges that need to be spotted earlier and quicker intervention. I think these mass shootings could be the new normal and people need to arm themselves legally with the training to prevent them or reduce the number of casualties. I see a lot of people getting killed with knives and machetes. Where is the Left on banning those? Nowhere, that where.

    5. Again, poor education, lack of a sense of history and presto, you have the “useful idiots” (Lenin) that will serve the Neo-Marxist elites that want to destroy our liberty and sovereignty. It’s fruitless to argue. Teach those who are still open. There are some Neo-Marxists that after they mature some, are actually coming to their senses. People want a Utopia when they are scared. The Founders were well aware of this and spoke about personal responsibility and liberty as a way to create as much of this as possible. Why anyone would want to give their life over to the government is beyond me.

    6. You’d be surprised how few of my comments and discussion ever get used by the left. I don’t fit their pre-conceived ideas about who an NRA member should be.

    7. Yes, when Obama was president, whatever negative event that happened domestically or worldwide, almost immediately the left proclaimed “it’s Bush’s fault”. Now, the NRA has become the whipping boy. What actually surprises me the most is that the NRA does not take stronger action in releasing media rebuttals ASAP.

Are there sensible new regulations to decrease gun violence? Draconian it might sound, but prohibiting the private sales of firearms such as at gun shows and auctions seems a place to start. However, the terrible church shooting in Texas Shows there are existing major flaws in our existing laws.

Since mental health seemingly cannot be detected early enough to prevent mass shootings, our major focus on gun deaths from gang and drug violence should be directed toward the left in no uncertain terms.

      1. Sorry Phillip I will respectfully disagree with you on a couple of points. First, there is No Such Thing As “Gun Violence” – guns are merely tools – the person using them – for good or evil – is the one that commits, or in many cases stops, ‘violence;. Second exactly which of the currently existing ‘gun control’ laws (as many as 25,000) is not predicated on sensible grounds? Please state unambiguously what further laws will decrease ‘gun violence’. Third, ah yes the mythical (mostly) ‘gun show loophole’ – enough has already has been said about that. Fourth – the “major flaws” are NOT in the laws, they are people failures. Example: the failure of someone in the Air Force to enter name deleted info into the NICS database as required by federal law. Add in numerous cases of individuals committing multiple counts of firearm related crimes – each of which is a separate felony (see dontray willlis) and getting probation. Nope, the laws are not flawed, the proper enforcement of them is – and that is a human issue.

        1. And I have to respectfully disagree with portions of your thesis; namely, the idea that properly informed and administered background checks would have stopped the Texas church shooting. They would not. No crime has ever been prevented by background checks in the history of the planet, and they were never intended to. READ THIS CAREFULLY: The purpose of background checks was and is to sucker people like you into supporting the conversion of our 2nd Amendment RIGHT to keep and bear arms into a government-issued privilege for which permission must be requested, and which government has no lawful authority to issue or deny. The purpose was also to sucker you into waiving your 4th Amendment right to be secure from a SEARCH of your ‘papers and effects’ on government databases in the absence of a warrant alleging probable cause of criminal conduct. The purpose was also to sucker you into waiving your 5th Amendment right to be secure from the taking of any of your rights without due process, i.e., a conviction of criminal conduct by a Court of Law. The purpose was also to sucker you into waiving your right to be secure from the federal exercise of authority not delegated to the federal government by the U.S. Constitution. (The federal government is not even delegated the authority to license firearm dealers.) In some dictatorial States the purpose of background checks is to sucker you into waiving your right to be secure from the State exercise of authority EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED TO THE STATES by the aforementioned Amendments.

The purpose of all of this, sir, is to argue, when government decides to REVOKE its bogus permission issued to you at the point of sale, that you have no rights left to claim because you have waived them all. It is a bogus argument, because government has no lawful authority to scam you and I out of our rights, either, but crunchtime is a hard time to argue that point. You’d damned well better start fighting to abolish the flatly illegal Brady Act NOW before it comes to that point.

Everything that is happening today with regard to major massacres is the result of people on both sides of the right to keep and bear arms issue agreeing with the thesis that something has to be done to curtail access to firearms by SOME segment of society; leaving the only question to be whose ox gets gored the worst. Stop it! Without that flawed attitude, the crime rate and the massacre rate would return to what it was prior to the Brady Act, because the “No Guns Allowed” signs would come down and people would be able to exercise their DUTY of citizenship to prevent vicious murders in their vicinity.

        2. General interpretation of “ gun violence”: A person who uses a gun to commit a violent act.

Truism: Laws of any classification are only effective for those willing to obey them. Therefore any new one has to be directed towards those who chose not to obey it, Namely: Criminals and the mentally impaired. Obviously- impossible to enforce without serious changes to our present system. Supply your own answer to this tenant.

Gun shows: How many have you yourself attended? I’ve been to more than I can remember. I’ve seen individuals buy guns from other persons carrying something they’ve brought from home that scared the daylights out of me based on the buyers appearance. Private sales out of car trunks in residential neighborhoods are quite common and perfectly legal. Take a guess who buys such guns. I’ll supply the answer. Those who can’t buy them legally anywhere else.

To all of you folks out there who believe my post was intended to further the notion new gun laws are desirable and/ or beneficial and are going to solve present shooting nightmares. Let me tell you a story: in 1962 the old department chain Montgomery-Ward was selling Colt 1917 revolvers, as a new batch had been released by the government for sale to civilians. The revolvers were displayed in an aisle with their barrels stuck in wooden dowels. One walked up, selected which one (s) they wanted, walked up to a checkout counter and paid their $ 16.95. No forms, no questions, no identification. And yes, I bought several. Nobody ever went ballistic, brought ammunition with them, loaded their purchase and shot up the joint. Imagine what might happen today in a situation like that. I shudder to think. The difference between then and now – IMO- people have changed drastically. For the worse it seems. New “ LAWS” passed somehow, someway, simply must address this horrible mental condition. How? I haven’t a clue.

      2. I don’t know what happened to the comment I just posted moments ago, but here I will try again:

No, Philip, prohibited private firearm sales at gun shows will not solve the issue because that is just another nail in the coffin of our right to keep and bear arms. Like all such regulations, laws and doctrines, it assists, rather than opposes, the thesis of those who will destroy our right to keep and bear arms entirely, and with it, destroy our right to defend ourselves against thugs and a rogue occupation government (but I repeat myself) the far-left Democrats are trying to establish.

You want to stop the massacres? You want to restore our liberty to keep and bear arms, which includes the responsibility to protect the liberties of all victims? You want to restore the fundamental principle that you cannot be free unless you protect the freedom of others whenever it is assaulted within your sphere of influence? Here’s how you do it:

ABOLISH the Brady Act background check law that converts the 2nd Amendment RIGHT into a privilege for which you must ask permission of the federal government, at the point of sale, to exercise.

ABOLISH the violation of your 4th Amendment right to be secure from SEARCH of your private ‘papers and effects’ on government databases in the absence of a warrant alleging probable cause of criminal conduct. (Form 4473 and NICS check.)

ABOLISH the violation of your 5th Amendment right to be secure from the TAKING of your right without due process by a Court of Law (i.e., conviction of a criminal act).

ABOLISH the violation of your long-standing doctrinal right, protected by the 9th Amendment among other authorities, to be secure from being requited to give up any right in order to exercise a right.

ABOLISH the violation of your 10th Amendment right to be secure from the federal exercise of authority not delegated to the federal government by the U.S. Constitution. The federal government has no authority to mandate interference in the purchase of a firearm at any time, and doesn’t even have the delegated authority to license firearm dealers.

ABOLISH the violation of your 10th Amendment right to be secure from the STATE exercise of any authority SPECIFICALLY PROHIBITED to the States by the aforementioned Amendments.

In short, ABOLISH the Brady Act and restore our liberties to what they were prior to 1993. Then we can work to ABOLISH the unconstitutional Gun Control Act of 1968, and then we can work to ABOLISH the unconstitutional National Firearms Act of 1934.

Make it so, ladies and gentlemen, and stop cooperating with the thugs who want you under their armed control with no means of defense available to you.

    8. Curt is correct. The law community works for dollars and won – lost case scores. The practitioners of law have lost sight of what truth and what “justice” means.

    9. “The last issue is one that just makes me laugh. The NRA is pushing Carry Guard; that is liability insurance for gun owners. The left has often DEMANDED all gun owners have liability insurance. So here you have the NRA promoting a program EXACTLY like the one the left has called for and what does the anti-gun-left do? Complain about the NRA and their promoting liability insurance for gun owners.”

CARRY GUARD and USCCA Insurance insure the gun owner to protect them from punitive and overzealous prosecution.

The anti-gunners want liability insurance, that will cost so much that only the rich can afford to own a gun AND that will pay the people who get shot and/or just feel threatened by “guns.”

    10. Curt is correct. The law works for dollars, and won – lost case scores. The law’s practitioners don’t comprehend the meaning of truth and “justice”.

    11. Law biding citizens will follow the law. Non law biding citizens would not.
Take a look at Chicago, gun control really works well there. All the law breakers turned honest, or not!

    12. The article is factual and 100% CORRECT. The left//libs/Dems don’t want to accept FACTS, if they would work with the facts to help the black incarcerated and murdered numbers would fall… INSTEAD, they instigate and spread false news, they would rather stir the pot and watch the death and prison numbers climb. Makes for great far left owned and operated media attention.

      1. The government began major social engineering in 1964 with the Great Society. Maybe it wasn’t their plan, but they destroyed the ROOTS of black urban society and created the crime wave.
It can be fixed but the urban political powers that be [PTB] will have to allow the citizens to be edufcated and be part of society and not just slaves that get a “free check” from the Welfare Office.
