CRKT Technician Folding EDC Multi-Tool – Review

U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- A lot of you readers wanted another option for a multi-tool after the last multi-tool Product Review. After looking around I found one made by Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) that is a stout looking unit. It is called the CRKT Technician.

The first thing that you’ll notice when you pull it out of the box is the weight. It weighs 11.8 oz. compared to a Leatherman Wave which is 8.5 oz., the CRKT is nearly ¼ lb. more. So, that’s why I say that it is stout.

I like the grip. It has a full-sized handle and a finger groove which I like. One word of caution though, if you have a small hand it may be a big handful for you to grip. Although I just had my wife test it out and she could grip it ok.

Let’s go over the tools it offers. To begin it has a blade which you would expect. As an extra bonus, the blade has a thumb stud to make it easier to open. But, the stud is located too close to the end so it doesn’t make it much easier unless you pull it up with your thumbnail. It needs to be further down the blade so you have more leverage so it is easier to pry open. I also wish it had a locking blade. I don’t know if I even have any folders anymore that don’t lock.

Then, of course, it has a screwdriver, reversible with both a Phillips or flat head option. One unique option, it has a folding chisel/scraper which is great for scraping gaskets clean or I guess any surface for that matter. Another and more unique tool is a telescoping magnet. How many times have you dropped a screw or nut down into a tight spot where you couldn’t reach it? Problem solved.

The needle nose pliers are backed up by grippers, wire cutters and a wire stripper all constructed out of a corrosion resistant stainless steel. Also included is a fine and rough file that features a bottle opener and a strap cutter, all on the same piece. The file would be nice to have when I’m roughing up a battery post.

I’m about to have to change the spark plugs in a couple of my trucks and my daughter’s car. I notice that it has a standard feeler gauge included. I’ll test that out later this week.

It comes with a heavy-duty canvas case which can be worn in the traditional upright position or you can run it longwise on your belt to carry it in the horizontal position. Your choice. I like the sheath. It is stoutly built.

If you want a multi-tool that more resembles an actual heavy-duty tool, then this is the ticket. It’s not a lightweight 25 pc. toolkit all in a 4-oz. package. It appears to be a sturdy option in a flimsy option world. And as usual, we will finish by listing the specs.
