.22 Ammo Bubble is Gone – .22 LR on Sale for Pennies per Round

Arizona -(Ammoland.com)- Remington Thunderbolt .22 LR ammunition is on sale at Locked & Loaded In Pana Illinois and online at their website. Bricks of 500 are priced at $11.79, which is 2.36 cents per cartridge.  The great .22 ammunition bubble, from late 2012 to the middle of 2017, is gone.

In June of 2014, I predicted that the bubble would have collapsed when prices fell below 4 cents a round for the cheapest .22 LR available.  From Ammoland.com:

You will know that the bubble is close to the bottom when you see .22 LR on sale for below 4 cents per round. At the lowest, we might see .22 cartridges below $10 for 500.

As of October, 2017, .22 ammunition was commonly available below 4 cents a round. From Ammoland.com:

Federal American Eagle is as low as 3.8 cents per round, the Federal champion 510 round is just under 4 cents a round, and there are several offerings of Aquila Super Extra Standard Velocity from 3.7 cents to 4 cents a round.

$11.79 for a brick of Remington .22 is not $10, but it is very close.

Lock & Loaded in Pana was able to purchase three million rounds of Remington ammunition at a very good price. They are passing it on to their customers. Tyler Sims, the owner has a philosophy about treating customers well. He believes that if customers are treated well, they will come back. His business, established five years ago, is booming. With deals like this, it is easy to see why.

When I talked to Locked & Loaded, they had sold half of the three million rounds in two days.  They are making sure they keep some of the deal for local customers as well as for people on line. Sales tax in Pana, Illinois, is 7.25%.  Shipping cost for a few thousand rounds comes to about the same. That increases the cost to 2.5 cents per round, still a very good price.

The great .22 bubble lasted longer than I thought, but like all bubbles it ended.

Quite a few commented online that prices would always remain at high levels, because either the manufacturers were conspiring to keep high profit margins, or because the government was conspiring to reduce supply.

In reality, neither was happening. Demand spiked because of President Obama and fear of legislation. There are close to 100 million .22 rimfire firearms in the United States. There may be 50 million .22 rimfire owners. It only takes a small percentage of those to decide they want to have an extra thousand rounds (just in case) to spike demand beyond production.

My best estimate is that production has increased about 20% since 2013. About 5 billion rounds of .22 LR are being produced for the U.S. market each year. Many millions of gun owners now have a reasonable stockpile of .22 ammunition. That is a good thing. With a little luck, I will be doing an article on shelf life of .22 rimfire.

If Democrats take the house in on November sixth, in the mid-term elections, the bubble may be re-inflated. They are pushing for gun control legislation (re-labeled as “gun safety”) with a will.

They believe they have created grass roots support for more gun control.

Second Amendment supporters have made a serious difference in the past. It remains to be seen if they will turn out to support President Trump this year by voting for Republicans in the mid term elections.

All sorts of sales are advertised, some of the prices look pretty good UNTIL shipping charges are added.

William Ginn

How about 30carbine 12 gauge 38 special 44 mag

willy d

I have bought the solid lead Remington, will nit buy again, bought the Remington Gold HP, works and feeds okay, but not the most accurate, Winchester bought jacketed HP’s nothing but problems never again, CCI gives about the best performance all around. I don’t mind paying more if the quality and performance is there

BIG Weve

Picked up 5 325 rd packs of Fed Auto Match from PSA for$11.99 a box with free shipping on 5 boxes. Destroys the $16.99 Wally World price and most LCS prices around $22.

Bill

As soon as you write about it the price jumps to $13! Way to go!

Michael Goodman

I need to purchase some more for the kids and grandkids to shoot during the holidays. The family that shoots together stays together.
They really like the conversion unit for the AR.

MagicDave

Democrats are certainly hell bent to disarm us. As for 22lr I have a fairly good supply of REALLY old Remington Golden 36 grain hp. As for shelf life I bought 5000 rounds in 1995 when my son turned 7 years old. They are still good and I have never had a misfire. Hard to believe….yes but it’s true. I do need to get another batch of them. I will add that my 22 of choice these days is a 22 hornet. I can reload them to whatever velocity needed.

Michael Maus

As the Rain Man would say, “Remington Sucks!”. No thanks, I still find CCI mini mags for about .0375 each when I buy 5k or more.

Bill

I had terrible luck with CCI. Never again. Remington std velocity was much better. I wish they still made it.

Vanns40

I’m surprised as I bet are others. Thunderbolt, in my opinion, is garbage and will not fire reliably in two of my 22’s. CCI Mini Mag on the other hand always, without fail, fires and functions. It’s the only 22 ammo I’ll buy now and I’m currently sitting on about 15K rounds so I’m good for a while.

Second amendment supporters DO make a serious difference……..WHERE IS OUR NATIONAL RECIPROCITY???????

Greg

2nd Amendment of the Constitution.

Ron

$12.95 shipping…….think not!

David W Bumpus

I went on there website an I didn’t see any bricks for 11 bucks.. Wal mart still cheaper..

MacofJack

The bubble may be gone for now, but at some point another liberal will be in the White House and it could (will) start all over again. I will make sure that I have put back enough for my needs by then!

Dennis Coates

Buy, stach and rotate as much as possible. Hide as many rounds as you can afford cause you can bet the liberals are not done yet. Beware brothers and sisters they are still fighting

SteveK

Never thought I’d see this day! If you’re not stocked up, time to grab some.

Dr. Strangelove

Prices on guns and ammunition have been on a general decline since the Hagfish lost her second election bid. However, the political pendulum will eventually swing back to the left and the second amendment will be under renewed attack. I’m not going to hoard while the prices are low, but I’m not going to let my supply dwindle, either.

William White

The Democrats won’t like that

brian Gunderson

Remington has become synonymous with crap. Their ammo, pistols, rifles. Worst 22lr ammo on the shelves.

Joseph P Martin

Cheap is sometimes just that. Remington has some pretty poor quality control, but they’re not alone. I bought a box of Winchester Subsonics and they were erratic firing and at one point a single round didn’t even make it out of a 4-inch barrel revolver and I had to use a cleaning rod to clear the barrel. Seems that the manufacturers, at least some of them, are more interested in quantity than quality. You get what you pay for. CCI may cost more, but my guns and the down range results are worth it.

notasheeple

They drop ship the ammo from Shreveport,LA.
I’m curious if that’s another business with other ammo to sell, or where they just store some of their items.

Pepe the Frog

Thunderbolts. Anyone who wants them is welcome to them. Even Remington “Golden Bullet” bulk pack are better, not that this is a high bar to pass. Aguila anything isn’t much better. Winchester bulk pack isn’t either, and even with Winchester T22s sometimes you get a good brick and sometimes you get 7-8% duds.

When Federal 510s or CCI Blazers are down back below twelve bucks a brick, or Mini-Mags come down back below five bucks a tray, I’ll get excited.

Jim

That makes two of us. CCI is my choice of 22 ammo.

Dennis Coates

I’ll second that

Roy D.

The sad thing is that Remington Thunderbolts are almost worth two cents a round, almost.

Rob Driggs

LOL yep

Brock

60% of the time they work…. every time.

At least they are better than those Russian shells that flooded the market in the 90’s…. if it gets real bad Again I still have half a brick of “juniors” that I can try to shoot.

hgonc2

I’l be happier when CCI Standard 40gr is 2 cents a round!
