It’s Time to Stop Religious Bigotry in Congress

USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- As we take time to honor and remember the life and work of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. – whose efforts changed our nation for the better and helped end bigoted, exclusionary policies against African Americans – we should also remember his message applies to bias and bigotry in all its forms.

In a 1963 speech at Western Michigan University, Reverend King said:

“There are certain things in our nation and in the world which I am proud to be maladjusted and which I hope all men of good-will will be maladjusted until the good societies realize. I say very honestly that I never intend to become adjusted to segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry.”

Republicans did exactly the right thing this week when they expressed their “maladjustment” toward Representative Steve King’s recent bigoted remarks. Congress members who use hateful language should be censured.

Democrats should express “maladjustment” toward bigotry in their own party – specifically the rising anti-Semitism and anti-Catholicism.

Where is the vote of disapproval for Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who in December questioned whether U.S. District Judge nominee Brian Buescher was qualified to be a federal judge given his Catholic faith and membership in the Knights of Columbus – a century-old Catholic charitable organization? In written questions, Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono and California Senator Kamala Harris specifically suggested Buescher should quit the organization if he was confirmed.

This is a clear attempt to apply the religious test that anti-faith members of the Democrat party are trying to put in place.

It was more of the same anti-Catholic bigotry which Senate Democrats levied against the judicial nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Amy Coney Barrett, during her confirmation hearings in September 2017. Then, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California remarked to Barrett that “the dogma lives loudly within you” and commented that Barrett’s religious beliefs might prevent her from upholding the law as a judge.

Similarly, where is the official condemnation for Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib?

Tlaib received a great deal of attention for using foul language when referring to the President at a campaign event – but that’s not really what concerns me. Where is the Democratic outrage for Tlaib’s relabeling Israel as Palestine on the map in her office? Why are House Democrats not moving to denounce her for having private dinners with a pro-Hezbollah activist who tweeted, “Israel does not have a right to exist. The terrorist entity is illegal and has no basis to exist other than a delusional ISIS-like ideology.”

What about disapproval for Tlaib’s defense of former CNN commentator Marc Lamont Hill after he was fired for calling for a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea,” a common phrase used by Hamas for decades which describes wiping out Israel from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean?

Finally, why have no Democrats condemned Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a vocal supporter of the BDS movement (which stands for boycott, divestment, and sanctions for Israel)? She has publicly called Israel evil and claimed the nation had “hypnotized the world,” a common anti-Semitic trope.

In addition to considering Reverend King’s message of ending bigotry, my hope is that Democrats would also follow their colleague, Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who wrote earlier this month for The Hill that:

“The party that worked so hard to convince people that Catholics and Knights of Columbus like Al Smith and John F. Kennedy could be both good Catholics and good public servants shows an alarming disregard of its own history in making such attacks today.

“We must call this out for what it is – religious bigotry. This is true not just when such prejudice is anti-Catholic, but also when it is anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, anti-Hindu, or anti-Protestant, or any other religion.”

Aside from being morally bankrupt, nurturing bigotry against religious groups in Congress will cost the Democrats in the long run.

As Michael Gerson wrote Thursday in The Washington Post, “if liberal Democrats want to compare the Catholic Church to a hate group, good luck with that. They will offend the last religious traditionalists they haven’t already and alienate a good many others besides.”

As Reverend King said, we should all be maladjusted to bigotry. It has no place in America – and especially not the American government.

Freedom of religion is guaranteed under the Constitution. When politicians are sworn in they swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States.. and the first thing they do is start spewing hatred and bigotry at Catholics and Jews . So right out the gate they spit on the Constitution they just swore to uphold. They need to be removed from office as soon as possible. The fact that they haven’t been removed already is disturbing as hell !!

I am offended! mlk was a repugnant racist. I lived in Selma when the loud mouthed sh_tskin stirred up more crap and created more problems for whites and real black people than the law should have ever tolerated. But then the law was “democratic”. Remove all the mlk statues, streets, boulevards, and any other things bearing the name of that criminal. “I am offended!” The “birmingham, Alabama black mayor, william bell and the City Council President johnathan austin had the Confederate Monument in Linn Park covered up because it “Offended” them. “The monuments are “offensive to our citizens,” Austin said”.… Read more »

Just when you thought congress had hit bottom as far as the amount of good they do for constituents and their favorability rating then comes the 2019 delegation that includes a fruitcake bar maid from NY and two muzzies in addition to all the old progressive liars and cheaters dug in deep. Dr. King would turn over in his grave if he could see this. This country is two steps backward and headed that way at lightening speeds.

The Dems had integrity a very long time ago, but laid it aside for the ever increasing need for Power, Title, and Money, which are the prerequisites for ALL aspiring politicians. FDR was the last of the Dems worthy of respect and maybe Truman. The Holy Bible warns that in the end days Right will be Wrong, and Wrong will be Right. The hypocrisies of the left will continue to thrive and increase with time. Those that scoff at Christians will find the error of their ways whilst upon one knee on “Judgement Day”.

Be sure to thank old FDR for your Social Security when your time to receive it comes, or turn it down since then you would be supporting a commie benefit.

@John, FDR did not intend that people should actually draw Social Security. That is why he made the age limit 65, at a time when people, only rarely, lived to be 65. FDR created an new tax using jealousy against the prosperous. FDR and his advisors devised the politics of jealousy, hate, and something for nothing. Democratic national socialists are still using the techniques, today.
FDR also felt that he was smarter than all the founders, and that the Constitution was just an impediment.

Something for nothing? I paid a tax for this insurance. It would give a little help to a widow raising children without a father who died too soon, and help those disabled. I can find no historical support for your response; however, there was a backlash from those that called this socialism. I am a very conservative Christian, and am very willing to say that FDR did more for the poor, albeit at times for political expediency, than any president before or since. Your response is nothing less than opinion, and I wonder if you will be able to bare… Read more »

@John, You did not pay tax for this insurance. You paid tax. For example: if you die before getting an amount from SS that is less than the tax you paid, your estate has no claim on the unpaid portion. On the other hand, people that have voluntarily disabled themselves through recreational drug use can receive SS payments, having paid little or none. People living out side the US can claim that they worked as illegal aliens and receive SS payments. Millions do. It is noble for one to give to a widow of your own volition. For the government… Read more »

John: May I suggest that you read the U.S. Constitution. You will find that by swearing to uphold the Constitution and violating that oath, he committed perjury, and in violating the Constitution, he committed usurpation, a very serious crime. Article 1, section 1, starts out with, all legislative powers herein granted… . The meaning is obvious, that the Constitution specifies what the legislature is allowed to do, and everything else is prohibited. Hence, by law, social security is prohibited, along with the W.P.A., C.C.C., removing gold coins from circulation, and so on. President Nixon was equally bad. impeachment procedures were… Read more »

Didn’t hear anyone calling for religious tolerance when Catholics were burning indigenous people on crosses, and stealing gold, and other artifacts for the inquisition, and the crusades. Catholics don’t have a moral base to start from, that is why their priests, and nuns victimize the children ….

The Inquisition ended about 200 years ago. The Muslims are doing it TODAY. Go back to your hovel. It was nice and quiet while you were gone. Other than your alter-ego the Green Dipstick.

Nomad, go back and read your history again, this time ALL of it. The Crusades were military campaigns, privately suppprted and all-volunteer, with only one mission: to TAKE BACK the territiory that had fallen under the moslem sword over a couple centuries. NO NEW territory was taken. Those territories and cities had been overrun by hordes of rampaging moslems, raping, pillaging, destroying, terrorising, killing, burning, stealing……. and the Crusades meant, and did, reclaim them. Yes, it took bloodshed to accomplish that. Just as the rightful inhabitants fell under the bloody sword of the invading monsters. And when you are reading… Read more »

Dr. King said that he dreamed that people one day would be judged by the content of their character. In Congress and the Senate, the content of the character of the majority of the members is sorely lacking if present at all.

As Democrats are the party of racism ,Jim Crow/the KKK their long tradition of it’s use is not surprising along with using the BORs as their doormat so what’s a bit more bigotry to them.
