Iowa: Both Chambers Pass Right to Keep & Bear Arms Constitutional Amendment

Iowa – -( On March 13th, 2019 the Iowa state Senate voted 33-16 to pass Senate Joint Resolution 18 to propose an amendment to the state Constitution affirming and recognizing the right of Iowans’ to keep and bear arms as a fundamental individual right.

Later the same day, the state House of Representatives voted 53-46 to concur. While this important amendment will not appear on the ballot until 2022, there are still two pieces of critical, pro-gun legislation that can be heard and enacted this year. Please contact your state Representative and urge them to SUPPORT HF 636 and HF 716. Click the “Take Action” button below.

Authored by Senator Brad Zaun (R-20), Senate Joint Resolution 18 will need to pass again during the 2021-2022 General Assembly before a constitutional amendment is put on the ballot for Iowa voters to decide in 2022.  Currently, Iowa is one of six states that do not have a right to keep and bear arms amendment in its state Constitution, including California, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York.

House File 636, introduced by Representative Matt Windschitl (R-17), would allow Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons (PCW) holders to go onto school grounds to pick up and drop off students without having to first unload and lock up their firearms in their vehicles.  In addition, it would also prevent employers from prohibiting employees to store firearms in their locked personal vehicles while on the employer’s parking lot.  So called “gun-freezones” are arbitrary boundaries that only disarm law-abiding citizens and leave them defenseless while doing nothing to affect criminals.

House File 716, introduced by Rep. Windschitl, would allow the use of traditional, “bottle-necked” rifle and pistol cartridges for hunting deer in Iowa, repealing the current restriction that only allows “straight-walled” cartridges.  This would expand hunting opportunities by allowing hunters to use commonly-owned firearms chambered in modern calibers such as those that have been available to American consumers for over a century.  In addition, HF 716 would ensure that hunting with handguns is protected throughout Iowa.

Your NRA would like to thank the lawmakers who voted in favor of SJR 18. Again, please click the “Take Action” button to contact your state Representative and urge them to SUPPORT HF 636 and HF 716.

    1. Liberals think that by banning guns, we will have a safer society. Unfortunately criminals don’t follow the laws! Look at all the school shootings, there are signs everywhere banning guns, what liberals don’t understand is that they (liberals) have turned our schools into easy targets because the criminal knows that there is no one in the school to shoot back at them.

    2. Wow, all it took was one troll to take a lot of people off track and reply to him. More than likely he is laughing all the way to the bank. Anyway, congrads. to Iowa for looking at the big picture and taking the fight to the illegitimate rights abusers.

    3. @ AM
You exemplify the National problem with your not using the muscle, called a brain; it starts to shrivel up from mental atrophy.
Proven true when you let others’ think for you!
What should be repealed is the abuse of the 1A by people, who plagiarize/repeat the twisted words of other people to achieve unjust gain/control of innocent people!

    4. Good for you Iowans. All states should have such laws in place. Its a shame that they don’t , allowing anti gun nuts to limit our freedoms in the name of ‘public safety’.

    5. Outstanding! Crush anti-gun legislation unapologetically! The 2A and Article VI is Supreme Law, never let rhetoric and bureaucrats tell you otherwise! They are afforded armed security by YOUR TAX DOLLARS!

    6. I realize, A) this is a ‘gun forum’,& the article is about 2A Sanity.
&, anti-2a Shills will post..; Also, some , not educated or ‘drank the koolaide'( mr andrew, Benefit of the doubt’).
So, it makes dense, (?yes?), to NOT smash the ‘ troll’; he may not BE a toll ( but, Now?✔)
Ignore or educate, or you TEACH : Pro-2A’s are uneducated, illiterate mobs oftypesying ‘rightwing militia-types’..
Shills gonna shlll..No response &.they dont get paid.
An old 2a guy( 45 years, under the radar).

      1. Morons should be kept in straight jackets, do you type with your nose Andrew Myers?
Take your fentanyl and go back to sleep. BFUCKINGARF…………

      2. @ Andrew Myers
You must be one of Bloombturd’s paid trolls. There is something very wrong with you head, maybe a lack of a mind. If the 2A was not in place we would have joined the ranks of Venezuela long ago. That is what is keeping your toad a– out of being loaded into a boxcar and taken to slaughter. Go back to your mole hole troll.

      3. Your a idiot . You repeal it and death toll will rise .and it will desroy the economy. Fire arms industry provides more jobs than can be replaced . 42 billion a year is what it makes. Not counting competion shooting . There many disaplines. Hunting industry . No guns tens of thousands of people will be unemployed. And it will shut down small business that would ruin the lives.of people that can’t just without losing everything. So when a.criminal breaks into your house with a gun bc criminals will still have guns. They will shoot or someone in. Your family. I’ve had someone try to rob me of it wasn’t for my gun I’d be dead. Guns don’t kill people evil people do. It’s my.right as being to preserve the ability to protect doest come.from government it is my.right a a living being . And when they out lawed went underground and crime rose up they legalized it and crime went down. You make.guns.illegal amd.crime.will go.threw the roof .

        1. Also, virtually ALL funds for wildlife conservation and habitat protection/restoration will immediately disappear across the country. Leftists contribute NOTHING to these programs compared to the state and federal taxes VOLUNTARILY put in place and paid for by America’s hunters and gun/ammunition and accessory owners and buyers. Leftists should always feel entirely free to impose their desired restrictions upon themselves. At least they could, in their minds, “feel” morally superior while the rest of us continue to provide the level of freedom and safety that they vicariously enjoy.

          1. Don’t forget the other side of the coin… The LWCF was permanently funded under S-47 recently, but unless they changed the source of permanent funding, the funding will be cut off when the oil/gas royalties dry up from their anti oil/gas activism…

      4. Andrew Meyers. People like you are a plague. You are what should be repealed. Your mere existence is the problem in the US. Move to Venezuela , it’s more suited for you & your kind.

      5. Drinking the Dem/Socialist Kool Aid has made you short-sighted enough to believe that repealing the 2nd Amendment will magically remove an essential, fundamental right possessed by all responsible human beings that has no origin from within the amendment? The amendment only recognizes the existence of the right and acknowledges that it should never be restricted or removed. Should we repeal and reserve only for the rest of us your oxygen amendment? Same exact thing.
