USA – -(Ammoland.com)- My longtime friend and colleague Dr. Thomas Sowell has just published a revised and enlarged edition of “Discrimination and Disparities.”

It lays waste to myth after myth about the causes of human differences not only in the United States but around the globe. Throughout the book, Sowell shows that socioeconomic outcomes differ vastly among individuals, groups and nations in ways that cannot be easily explained by any one factor, whether it's genetics, sex or race discrimination or a history of gross mistreatment that includes expulsion and genocide.

In his book “The Philadelphia Negro” (1899), W.E.B. Du Bois posed the question as to what would happen if white people lost their prejudices overnight. He said that it would make little difference to most blacks.

He said: “Some few would be promoted, some few would get new places — the mass would remain as they are” until the younger generation began to “try harder” and the race “lost the omnipresent excuse for failure: prejudice.”

Sowell points out that if historical injustices and persecution were useful explanations of group disadvantage, Jews would be some of the poorest and least-educated people in the world today. Few groups have been victimized down through history as have the Jews. Despite being historical targets of hostility and lethal violence, no one can argue that as a result Jews are the most disadvantaged people.

Jews are not alone in persecution either. The number of overseas Chinese slaughtered by Vietnamese mobs and the number of Armenians slaughtered by mobs in the Ottoman Empire in just one year exceeds the number of black Americans lynched in the history of the U.S. From 1882-1968, 4,743 total lynchings occurred in the United States, of which 3,446 of the victims were black.

Sowell concludes this section suggesting that it is dangerous for society to depict outcome differences as evidence or proof of malevolent actions that need to be counterattacked or avenged. Politicians and others who are now calling for reparations to blacks for slavery should take note of Sowell's argument.

There's considerable handwringing among educational “experts” about the black/white academic achievement gap. Part of the persistence of that gap can be laid at the feet of educators who replaced what worked with what sounded good. One notable example of success is the achievement of students at the all-black Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., from 1870 to 1955. During that period, Dunbar students frequently outscored white students on achievement tests in the Washington, D.C., area.

Sowell, who studied Dunbar and other high-achieving black schools, says, Dunbar “had unsparing standards for both school work and for such behavioral qualities a punctuality and social demeanor. Dunbar's homework requirements were more than most other public schools. Some Dunbar parents complained to the D.C. Board of Education about the large amount of homework required.”

Dunbar High School was not the only black school with a record of success that would be the envy of today's public schools. Schools such as Frederick Douglass (Baltimore), Booker T. Washington (Atlanta), PS 91 (Brooklyn), McDonogh 35 (New Orleans) and others operated at a similar level of excellence. By the way, these excelling students weren't solely members of the black elite; most had parents who were manual laborers, domestic servants, porters and maintenance men.

Observing the historical success of these and other black schools, one wonders about the catchwords of Chief Justice Earl Warren's statement that separate schools “are inherently unequal.” That vision led to racial integration going from being a means to an end to racial integration becoming an end all by itself. Sowell doesn't say this, but in my view, integration becoming the goal is what has made diversity and inclusion the end all and be all of today's educators at many levels.

Dr. Thomas Sowell's “Discrimination and Disparities” is loaded with pearls of wisdom from which we can all benefit, and as such, this will not be my final discussion of his masterpiece.

    1. Another good one by Walter Williams. When Dr. Sowell stopped writing articles for Ammoland then Mr. Williams took over. His articles are always worth reading and contain a lot of common sense without the fluff.

    2. Both of these men, Drs. Sowell and WIlliams, are masters at looking beyond the smoke and mirrors of what “civiised society” considers “right” and “good” and “moral”. Both can say these sorts of things with relative impunity as both are living examples of what they teach.
      Not certain about Dr. Williams, but I am quite certain I recall aright that Dr. Sowell grew un “in the projects” of Baltimore (may be a different but similar city) in a family with a single Mum. He DOES know what live in the “hood” is all about, as he lived it.. rejected it, then made a way to get out (with some good help, of course, and nothing is wrong about that) Their own lives puts the lie to the myth that one is “stuck” in one’s “assigned rut” by virtue of being born of a certain race, in a certain economic status, or social. Dr. Sowell had “all of the above” going against him growing up…… yet learned to NOT govern himself (or let himself BE governed) by the steroetypical role assignments others would put upon him.

      I loved Dr. Williams use of the Jewish people as examples… if THEY had sunk to the same level as the typical black communities around them, they’e be able to claim ‘disadvantaged” status and play the Woe is We card.

      But in SPITE of their “reasonable justification” enabling them, they do the best they can with what God supplies, and move on.

      One thing the Jews have maintained very high in their “important issues” is family stability and involvement. I have never met anyone who is even half serious about their chosen religion and inherited culture as Jews to ever divorce. And I’ve known quite a few in those categories. On the other hand…. we ALL know (or should) the statistics amongst the black community. FATHERS amongst the Jews hear and implement the COMMAND, back in Deuteronomy, FATHERS, teach your children. That presumes, even mandates, the fethers remaining a part of their children’s lives so they are available and involved to make teaching their children possible. Many black children do not even know who their sperm donor was.

    3. Both men are excellent writers and wise to the society we live in. No matter, the militants will dismiss them as “Uncle Toms”. This has to come to an end, before we implode from paranoia.

      There may be blood….

    4. How did this NRA® propaganda showed-up in my suggestions?

      I never even searched for the keyword ‘NRA’ recently! Even anonymously!

      So why the fork* is Google® messing with me? Or have they suddenly started receiving payouts for [irrelevant] broadcasts?

      *From the looks of comments on this piece alone, I’m sure an “F-bomb” is way more lethal for this site than occurrence of literal lethal-violence?

    5. I have always liked Mr. Williams, I have listened to him on the radio and read his online.
      And like many things he is right again. This isn’t about being “spiritual” or anything to do with G*d, it has to do with education and how it has failed the inner cities blacks, and the moment someone went to a school board and said that their children were having to much homework. Even though the school their children were going to a school that were better than the white ones.
      Then there was the supreme court’s ruling that changed everything. Not that it was a bad thing. But the school Dunbar, now had to “dumb down” their curriculum to be inline with the white ones. And now we have “common core ” which is worse than “outcome based ” which is what my kids had to go through. And I don’t think anyone knows what is right going on with common core.
      But once the Democrats had their claws in the inner cities with the promises of they are the only ones who can make their lives better. Things got worse. And that is the problem.

    6. Facts by black authors that go against liberal propaganda are ignored and denied by Democrats and liberals almost as quickly as facts cited by white authors. You can’t argue facts and logic with people who ignore facts and don’t have logic, much less common sense.

    7. I am liking Walter Williams more and more.
      His articles make perfect sense.
      Responsibility, self discipline, hard work, education and family values all lead to success.
      These are Conservative values, embraced by both Asians and Jews.
      Just look at the results.
      Hood Culture is what is ailing the black minority in our inner cities.
      Until they look inside at the spiritual problems associated with embracing this toxic culture, there will be no progress.

    8. We have long held the need to see others as equal, and not less than, or greater than self. The Bible states that God does not distinguish, or recognize the statue of men. HE sees us all as equal, and accountable for our own actions; which forms the basis of judgement.
