In Calls for More Gun Control, Facts Refute Media & Anti-Gunners

U.S.A.-(Ammoland.com)- In the wake of two horrible mass shootings—in El Paso and Dayton—the obligatory demands for more restrictions on firearms ownership have several things in common, but the one constant is that the media and gun prohibitionists unintentionally refute their own words with the facts.

According to Bloomberg News, in a story headlined “Republicans fear ‘extinction’ in the suburbs over gun control,” the news agency quotes former Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo explaining that in the suburbs there is “broad support for” universal background checks. Several paragraphs later, the same term is used, and the writer notes that the “universal background check” is a “modest measure.”

But this and other stories about both incidents have glossed over the fact that both killers passed background checks when they obtained their firearms.

The Bloomberg story reported something else that may stir emotions but ignored a critical fact in another mass shooting. Bloomberg’s piece noted, “The shift (in gun politics) was propelled by the Newtown elementary school massacre in December 2012, after which Senate Democratic leaders attempted to pass a bipartisan bill to require universal background checks, but were thwarted by a coalition of mostly Republicans.”

Rights activists recall without hesitation that background checks were only remotely connected to the Newtown tragedy because deranged killer Adam Lanza murdered his own mother and took her guns, which had been purchased legally in Connecticut, to launch his rampage. Lanza skipped the background check by killing his mother, who had passed a background check.

KTVT News, the CBS affiliate in Dallas, reported that the alleged El Paso killer legally bought the rifle allegedly used in the killing of 22 people, which means he passed a background check.

USA Today, a newspaper that has traditionally supported ever-tightening gun control laws, reported that the Dayton murderer purchased his firearm “from an online retailer in Texas. It then was transferred to him by a local firearms dealer who would be required to perform a background check, police said.”

In both of these cases, as in the case of the killer at the Garlic Festival in California a week earlier, a background check was performed. The background check, thus, becomes something of a red herring argument.

Under existing federal law, KTVT acknowledged in its report, “The background check is processed by the National Instant Criminal Background Check system, which can approve, delay or deny a purchase. If NICS does not turn up any records and the individual shows no overt signs of mental instability, there’s little a dealer can legally do to stop the sale.”

Media bias appears front-and-center in such reports, and particularly in a story about violence in Chicago, where the body count is rising faster than the summer temperatures. An MSN story declares in its headline, “As summer violence rages on, a Chicago gang member’s jail recordings offer a rare look at the city’s entrenched gun culture.” But the problem is the city’s gang culture, which leads to shootings on a daily basis. The headline is aimed at demonizing firearms, not the thugs—including convicted felons who are legally disqualified from owning or possessing firearms—who are pulling the triggers.

By some estimates, there are as many as 15 million so-called “semiautomatic assault rifles” in private ownership across the U.S. Three such firearms were used in California, Ohio and Texas. Millions of honest gun owners who didn’t use their firearms for mayhem have good reason to feel they are being penalized for crimes they did not commit.

And when talking about crimes, news reports and gun control proponents seem at best reluctant to mention that each one of these killers violated several existing laws that were all passed on the promise that they would prevent such atrocities. Laws against murder, illegal use of firearms, illegal discharge of firearms, assault with deadly weapons and in California transporting a firearm across state lines that is illegal in the Golden State; all of these laws, and no doubt many others, were violated. None of those statutes prevented these crimes, something nobody seems willing to discuss.

Thus gun owners can justifiably argue on social media that nobody demonizes fast cars or motorcycles when someone gets behind the wheel or grabs the handlebars and causes a deadly accident.

The investigations into all three recent tragic incidents are continuing. More facts are emerging about each of the killers who are solely responsible for their crimes. Two of them are beyond the reach of the law because they are dead. The third is in custody, and after what will likely be a series of trials, he will probably face execution.

Meanwhile, the gun prohibition lobby will continue trying to exploit such crimes to raise funds, elect anti-gun-rights politicians and pursue what Second Amendment activists see as a crusade to eliminate the right to keep and bear arms.

For in the final analysis, to firearms community activists this is not an issue about guns, it’s about rights.

Signatures needed!!! GOA 2A Action Campaign>>>> Things have taken a turn for the worse since we asked you to email the White House… …NOW, SENATE REPUBLICANS ARE UNITING BEHIND LINDSEY GRAHAM’S BILL THAT WOULD EFFECTIVELY *END* YOUR 2A RIGHTS. This Red Flag Gun Confiscation bill, based on a prototype drafted by the anti-gun Giffords Organization, would send SWAT teams to your door to steal your guns with NO REAL DUE PROCESS WHATSOEVER. This is our promise to you — we will fight until the very last vote is cast to destroy this atrocious bill, but we’re going to need voters… Read more »

When a family is killed in a car crash buy a drunk behind the wheel do we blame the car? When terrorists flew jets into the World Trade Center did we blame Boeing? When the Federal Building in Oklahoma City was blown to pieces by radicals did we blame the fertilizer company? When a jihadist drove thru a pedestrian walkway in NYC killing several people did we blame the truck? When a murderer broke into a home and slit the throat of the sleeping homeowner, did we blame the knife? The trigger on a gun does not pull itself. The… Read more »

One thing that the media will never let out is these last 2 shooters were registered Democrats.

Laddyboy

Ya don’t say! I believe I read a report that about 98% of the multiple innocent people were slaughtered in “no gun zones” was done by DemocRATs. Also most of the KILLERS – – just happen to be taking psychotropic drugs.

the party that thinks it is okay to kill babies both before and after birth, kill old and sick people but not kill convicted criminals that have been tried and adjudicated guilty in a courtroom by their peers is not a legitimate party. it is the same party that wants to let illegal people into our country but restrict our right to defend ourselves from predators of the two or four legged type. how many time have there been new laws passed to stop the carnage but it seems to keep occurring. you cannot legislate away evil or insanity. a… Read more »

“Republicans fear ‘extinction’ in the suburbs over gun control”? Which Republicans? I can clearly see that that headline is meant to manipulate opinions, not reflect them. They genuinely think we are that stupid.

The worst thing about antis is not that they want to take our guns. It’s that they constantly lie about it.

USMC0351Grunt

‘Republicans fear ‘extinction’?

How so?

On July 10th, 2019 three Republicans walked into County Commissioner’s court in Presidio Texas and produced and proceeded to get passed a county Second Amendment Sanctuary Resolution, in front of three Democrat commissioners of a Democrat judge.

What’s your point again?

Toadvine

My point is that Bloomberg and his orcs genuinely think we’re all gonna fall for “Give up your gun rights or you’ll lose the election”. It’s a psyop to get us to bend the knee.

The GOP establishment in DC might cave, but at the state and local levels they’re digging in and winning on gun rights. The grabbers think that those who don’t budge on gun policy are “afraid” of the FuddRA, when in reality they don’t budge out of conviction, not cowardice.

Laddyboy

Agreed!

MSM never reports the murders in Chicago because theyve banned the guns, no more laws to pass here!..lets move on to the next city and get those guns banned from law abiding citizens!

Toadvine

“What about Chicago/Baltimore” is starting to feel like a deflection of violence anywhere else. But it still proves a point: libs only make gun violence a national issue when the victims are rich white people.

JPM

Facts and truth have no place in the agenda of the Democrats and Liberals. You can’t win an argument using logic and common sense when the person you are arguing with isn’t logical and has no common sense. The truth becomes mute in an argument with liars. Most anti-gun idiots know nothing factual about firearms, only the B.S. put out by the anti-gun organizations and only repeat those lies and refuse to accept facts and the truth as it isn’t politically correct and runs counter to what they believe. Feelings are more important to the majority of the public than… Read more »

WHEN ARE YOU UNLEARNED PEOPLE GOING TO GET IT THOUGH YOUR HEAD #1 THE AR 15 IS NOT AN ASSAULT WEAPON A R STANDS FOR ARMOR LIGHT. AN ASSAULT WEAPON IS A FULL AUTO WEAPON THAT THE MILITARY HAS. GUNS DON’T KILL PEOPLE PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE. ???? WHAT KIND OF ASSAULT WEAPON DID TIMOTHY McVEIGH WHO KILLED 168 PEOPLE USE,RIGHT LOOK IT UP. WHAT DID THE BOSTON BOMBER USE?????? People who are nuts are going to kill….

AK Don

You are correct except for the name. The AR-15 was first produced by the ArmaLite Co who later sold the rights to Colt in the early 60’s. That’s where the “AR” came from.

Laddyboy

CORRECT! Let US stop the LIE that the “DemocRATic National communist party” CONTROLLERS are using.

SGT_Wombat

Jarhead, you sir are INCORRECT. There is NO SUCH THING as an Assault WEAPON! It is a term made up by the left to confuse the non gun owners. There are such things are assault rifles, those are used by the military. AR stands for Armalite Rifle. Armalite was the company that built the AR-15 designed by Eugene Stoner.

Jeff

We should never give in to the calls to just “do something.” To address these shootings and gun violence in general requires facts and reason, not hysteria. Have a thoughtful discussion.

Ask proponents how expanded background checks would have prevented any of these shootings. The NICS started in 1998. Since that time, which of the mass shooters would not or did not pass a background check? What will an expanded background check find on someone with no criminal record, no history of interactions with law enforcement and no record of being involuntarily committed to a mental facility?

BigJim

In my personel experience, you WILL NOT legislate ANY weapon out of the hands of a deranged person, they will find a way. Nothing is more frightening than to face them down, and attempt to disarm them without a weapon of your own. Which I did have but my handgun vs. his shotgun was not what i wanted to engage in. I knew this person had not slept in 3 days and was attempting to withdraw from alcohol on their own. Delerium Tremens or something like that. Gun free zones and anything of the sort is just a mass death… Read more »

The politicians and the mass media (for the most part) are the real criminals in my opinion. Feeding the masses with Misinformation and Fear Campaigns with zero accountability. People believe what they see and hear on the news with very few actually researching beyond what the talking heads have to say. So what if they [The Media] show a shotgun blasting a watermelon and say it’s an AR-15…no one will see the retraction. The seed is planted; An AR-15 can make a watermelon explode with one shot and there are 15 Million of these weapons out there, in the hands… Read more »

“The, “reliable and respected resources” have diminished over the decades as mainstream America slid into complacency since the dawn of the feminist movement back in the late 60s early 70s and the birth of the habitual frivolous lawsuits in our court systems where everyone was getting sued for looking at somebody wrong are the winning of large awards for spilling hot coffee in your crotch. No one wants to hear that over 100 people are killed “Every Day” in the United States from vehicle crashes. So where are all of the marches, and media coverage about these terrible roadway tragedies happening daily? Told’ya that you didn’t want to hear it….We all know what their agenda is.

Huapakechi

When you include the categories of medical mistakes, and street drugs, that body count far exceeds the inflated tally of gun deaths, most of which are suicides followed by gang related murders.

Toadvine

Not even liberals’ favorite Science Man, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, could put things in perspective for them without getting tarred and feathered. They have a whole playbook they published after Sandy Hook, and it explicitly says to not let facts get in the way of the narrative.

Libs are whopping morons who always have to blame something besides the culprit. In the case of firearms, the tool and not the actor is blamed. I have never seen any firearm load itself, get itself downtown and then shoot anyone. They are in “broad support for” universal background checks – Duh! Background check requirements already exist, and have existed for years. Let’s get the mental health professionals in step and have them provides names to the system like they have required to do for years, but not complied with. Think of the lives they could have saved. Democrats and other gun grabbers do not care about any other causes of death because it does not help their agenda, which is total confiscation of all firearms owned by the citizens of the USA.
