Guns Save More Lives Than They Take; Prevent More Injuries Than They Inflict ~ VIDEO

USA – -(Ammoland.com)- I’m Dan Wos and welcome to another Ammoland News Second Amendment Update.

Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year — or about 6,850 times a day. [1] This means that each year, firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives. [2]

Of the 2.5 million times citizens use their guns to defend themselves every year, the overwhelming majority merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers. Less than 8% of the time, a citizen will kill or wound his/her attacker.[3]

As many as 200,000 women use a gun every year to defend themselves against sexual abuse.[4]

Even anti-gun Clinton researchers concede that guns are used 1.5 million times annually for self-defense. According to the Clinton Justice Department, there are as many as 1.5 million cases of self-defense every year. The National Institute of Justice published this figure in 1997 as part of “Guns in America” — a study which was authored by noted anti-gun criminologists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig.[5]

Armed citizens kill more crooks than do the police. Citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as police do every year (1,527 to 606).[6] And readers of Newsweek learned that “only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The ‘error rate’ for the police, however, was 11 percent, more than five times as high.”[7]

Handguns are the weapon of choice for self-defense. Citizens use handguns to protect themselves over 1.9 million times a year. [8] Many of these self-defense handguns could be labeled as “Saturday Night Specials.”

For me personally, and several other people I have known, and likely thousands of others, the mere presence of a firearm has “defused” a potentially deadly situation. I have never needed to shoot anyone (yet) and I hope I never do, but 3 times in my life, having a handgun and letting someone see that I was armed was enough to cause an aggressive individual to stop their potentially dangerous behavior and turn and walk away.

All of what you say is probably true. But keep in mind that if you are licensed to carry “concealed” even printing of a concealed firearm through your clothing can be viewed as violating the terms of your license. Showing it to your (potential) assailant would cross into a grey area where terms like “brandishing” and “offensive display” are used and may be interpreted in court in ways you’d not be happy with. Your continued freedom might then hinge on whether or not the attorney representing the state intends to run for higher office. And just forget about firing a… Read more »

Yeah, years ago I was ‘told’ by an NRA sanctioned instructor (retired police chief from a moderate-sized city) during an all-day NRA training session that you should always carry concealed. I was ‘told’ that if some Karen at the grocery spotted my holstered weapon, open or concealed, and called the cops they would have to arrest me for reckless something or creating a disturbance. Then I read the actual law – in my state, open carry is allowed without a license to carry; concealed carry requires a license to carry; both are legal. There is no ‘brandishing’ laws, however drawing… Read more »

If Karen sees you’re carrying, shouldn’t it be deemed ‘open carry’, therefore legal? It ain’t concealed if she sees it! Guess that’s too logical for gvt.

That’s FL, not other states.
Lots of other states are not that stupid

If this info made the main stream news there would be no debate whatsoever on second amendment RIGHTS. That is exactly why “they” won’t allow it to be. The progressive, demoncrapic left aka the communist party (and rinos) wants every American citizen disarmed/unarmed so they can further enslave us. Communism cannot take over when there are armed people who value their freedom and rights. When the truth about communism becomes obvious the people will wage war on it to get their lives and country back. The demoncraps MUST disarm the citizenry lest we rise up against their evil ideals. This… Read more »

Bill – never forget that the CDC intentionally hid data that they had collected for nigh on to 3 decades – simply because the numbers did NOT support their premise that DGU is rare. IMHO the numbers ARE available but get pooh poohed by the anti-gun crowd for that very reason. All part of their ‘strategery’ to make guns and their owners ‘look’ bad or evil or some such nonsense. Example: even if we use the likely low ball numbers from slick’s DOJ and presume that in ‘only’ 10% of the cases was a life actually saved, that is something… Read more »

Absolutely agree Sir.

Arm up and carry on

The intimidation value of a firearm in thwarting a perp’s intention on a victim is invaluable, if applied correctly. By it’s very nature, it’s measure is subject mostly to guesswork, since most encounters are not reported to authorities. Anti-gunners will always try to downplay it presence.

You and the others are not getting it, he is using the anti-gun people own data against them.
Data that the anti-gun people thought would help them but it turns out helps us.
You can’t buy that.

If your a normal lawbiding citizens brandishing a firearm you will get in serious trouble , but if you are a member of the government you are free to brandish at will . Our county attorney here brandished a rifle and fired a shot in the air during a disagreement and only got charged with disorderly conduct. Privileged people in the government have different rules than us peons !

The problem with this article and why the data and information contained within will be immediately dismissed as hyperbole, is because the facts and figures the author chooses to include have drastic variances. When there is such a gravitation of “standard deviation”, any self-respecting statistician would throw everything out and start again. Especially, when the references for those figures are absent. For example: > Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. > According to the Clinton Justice Department, there are as many as 1.5 million cases of self-defense every year. > Citizens use handguns to protect themselves… Read more »

Which is it? All are good indications that guns are used millions of times a year in self-defense. Prudent 2A supporters will take any estimate by the Dept of “Justice”, the gun grabbing Clinton Admn and gun grabber George Will as heavily conservative (and misleading) estimates. You know very well it is impossible to get the exact number, which also varies from year to year.

Wild Bill

Delete the Clinton administration’s numbers because they are self serving lies. Recompute.
