Congressman Matt Gaetz Grills ATF Director Steven Dettelbach

Washington, DC – In a heated exchange during the House Judiciary Committee’s Oversight hearing of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Congressman Matt Gaetz questioned ATF Director Steven Dettelbach about the agency’s loss of firearms and non-compliance with regulations.

Reading from a story investigative journalists from AmmoLand News broke titled: ATF, the Enforcer of Gun Laws, Lost 1000s to Thieves. Gaetz asked Dettelbach how many guns the ATF had lost, to which Dettelbach responded that he was unsure of the question’s context. Gaetz then referred to the source report by the Office of Inspector General that revealed thousands of firearms, firearm parts, and ammunition had been stolen from the ATF.

Dettelbach clarified that no guns were lost but were stolen by an individual who was not an ATF agent and that the ATF had implemented numerous safety measures in response to the incident. Gaetz then referred to a Government Accountability Office report.

Gaetz questioned Dettelbach about the ATF’s failure to follow the recommendations of the Office of Inspector General and a Government Accountability Office report, questioning why the agency had not adhered to its own policies.

“…there were recommendations made on what you should do so that you don’t become the victim of the theft, and the inspector General’s saying you’re not following them I’m quoting directly from the inspector General’s report: “thousands of firearms, firearms parts, and ammunition had been stolen from the ATF.”

Dettelbach deflected, saying that the agency had implemented numerous safety measures and that the Inspector General’s report was from several years ago.

Gaetz also questioned Dettelbach about the ATF’s deletion of firearms purchase records that were not lawfully obtained.

“…you keep records you’re not supposed to? It was a quarter million of them you had to delete right? Was it over 200000 you had to delete? I just want to know the number of records you had to delete that were not being lawfully maintained.”

continuing “…that’s what you guys do you keep what you shouldn’t.”

Dettelbach defensively responded that records had not been searched and did not recall the exact number of records deleted.

Concerning a report by AmmoLand News from Aug 11, 2022: “Family-Owned Legacy Gun Shop Latest Casualty of Biden’s War on Guns” Congressman Matt Gaetz read a related letter from one of his constituents, a firearms dealer who had been in the business for 46 years. The dealer had completed a background check on a customer, which the Florida Department of Law Enforcement approved. However, the ATF later deemed it a non-approval and revoked the dealer’s license for releasing the firearm. Gaetz accused the ATF of destroying the livelihood of a law-abiding citizen over a technicality.

Dettelbach responded that Congress granted the ATF’s authority to inspect firearms dealers and ensure their compliance. He also stated that the vast majority of firearms dealers were compliant and were the first line of defense against straw purchases.

Gaetz accused the ATF of being hypocritical for imposing a zero-tolerance policy that resulted in the highest rate of Federal Firearms license revocations in 16 years while the agency could not live up to its own standards. The hearing ended without any resolution to the issues raised by Gaetz.

The recent Oversight hearing of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has shed more light on the agency’s continued non-compliance with even it’s own regulations and failure to follow recommendations from the Office of Inspector General and Government Accountability Office reports. The hearing revealed severe concerns about the ATF’s ability to enforce regulations effectively and lawfully. The issues raised by AmmoLand News and Congressman Gaetz require further investigation and resolution to ensure that the ATF is operating within the bounds of the law and protecting public safety.

That’s great, he spoke sternly and made the director out as a fool, which he is… but what was accomplished? The rule still stands, and the FFL is still out of business. He should have demanded the BATFE reinstate that man’s license to deal, and got a guarantee that it would be done. These hearings are just for sound bites. No accountability ever ensues, no jail time, no illegal laws and regs changed. GOP are all about theater and promises, but never carry through. Worse than DNC, who admit they are your enemy, rather than stabbing you in the back.

GMTA. My first thought reading this was Dog & Pony Show!

The other Jim

Biden doesn’t normally hire white men unless they are homosexual, transgender, or mentally challenged. Which is Dettelbach?

Bigfootbob

Jim, you’re making an awfully big assumption by calling Dettelbach a man.

The other Jim

aah, 1 vote that Dettelbach is Transgender. I think Dettelbach may hold all of Joe Biden’s 3 prerequisites for the job.

J.galt

All of the above

The other Jim

All of the above…he fits in perfect then with Joe Biden’s Anti-establishment administration of freaks, weirdo’s, perverts, and immoral ungodly degenerates.
And Joe would be proud if he knew your response.

KenW

…or totally unqualified for the position.

The other Jim

That’s another one of Joe Biden’s prerequisites to be hired in his Administration. The most Unqualified Persons with perverted lifestyles get the job.

totbs

He’s the incompetent boob.

The other Jim

Gomer Pyle.

Rebel VA

No, Gomer Pyle may have been mentally deficient but he had morals! Those clowns don’t!

USMC0351Grunt

I think LittleDick identifies as a dumbass?

The other Jim

He certainly does not display any sign of intelligence. He sas “aah, ahh, aha, aah” a lot and then nothing. Seems incoherent most of the time; possibly some nepotism going on as he may be Biden’s Blood line.

Honestly, I saw this hearing.. I was embarrassed for Dettlebach. What a classic left wing moron.

I don’t understand (well I do) why democrats put them / them’s like this in charge of something like the ATF… Shouldn’t he be in charge of making a label that says its a hate crime to tear the label of a woman’s dress that lists “plus sized men” as a size?

Repubs aren’t any better! Remember when Bush assigned Mike Brown to head up FEMA and all Brown ever did was work with horses? Then Katrina cam along and what did Brown do outside of f*king up EVERYTHING from start to finish?

Stag

I’m honestly kinda glad there aren’t more competent people in charge of these unconstitutional agencies.

USMC0351Grunt

If they were competent, we wouldn’t be having any problems because they would be too busy DOING THEIR JOBS!

Stag

Their job is to violate rights. Why would you want someone more competent doing that? I would rather have Sgt. Schultz than Col. Klink.

I was referring to personnel such as yourself, Arizona, Wild Bill, John Crump, etc., etc., pretty much those of us that are directly active in the 2A community that took oaths to truly defend and protect the Constitution and the rights of our citizenry.

Stag

Ah, I see. Well, the reason true 2A people aren’t in those positions is we would have to honor our oath by immediately burning it to the ground with the traitors still inside. Waco style. Give em a taste if their own medicine.

I quite sure there is a maintenance plan / budget for cleaning the office spaces.

BigD

Nobody is telling the truth!! The ATF (BATFE) is not an elected branch. They have been told and told that they cannot interpret laws, rewrite laws, or make new laws. They are not a legislative or judicial branch and need to be brought under control.
These new rules are illegal and cannot really be enforced, the problem is, our government moves so slowly it will be a year or more before they will get before a federal court so they can be redacted.

HLB

The individual citizens who deal with individual BATFE agents can redact the BATFE’s errors on the spot.

HLB

Protect defend serve

It’s too bad the ATF doesn’t apply the standards to themselves they hold FFLs. Put them out of business. Replace them with “Office of Hold Government Accountable” which would include felony charges and up to 10 years and $250,000 in fines for each incident, loss of pensions, prohibition to be employed by federal agencies.

USMC0351Grunt

“the___doctrine was aimed at ensuring that statutes clearly inform citizens of prohibited acts while simultaneously providing definite standards for the enforcement of the law.” Would be void for vagueness.

Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH

“Congressman Matt Gaetz Grills ATF Director Steven Dettelbach”
Hopefully to a well-done shoe leather.

Trussman

Go get ’em Matt.

AZ Lefty

Matty was upset there were no minors to molest

Stag

I’m kind of impressed at how your comments keep getting less and less intelligent. It’s really quite astonishing.

The other Jim

Dettelbach after continued fumbling really couldn’t answer any questions whatsoever. 500,000 Background checks and then 1 error not caused by the FFL and no more livelihood. More and more pressure needs to be exerted on the ATF to crush them; I hope Gaetz put up a bill and pushes it to dissolve the ATF.

Arizona

They pull a license for a typo, while they lose thousands of guns and illegally keep millions of records in direct violation of numerous laws. No accountability for them, loss of livelihood and prison time for citizens.

The other Jim

The highest of hypocrisy with savage detrimental effect to the Law-abiding Taxpaying Citizens. Dettelbach and the rest of his ATF are emotionally empty people inside. I sent Gaetz an e-mail telling him what good work he did, and continue with the same (IG Audit Reports, and GAO Audit Reports on ATF) and any other new ATF Lawlessness and US Citizen abuse by bringing ATF in to answer for themselves continuously; and as always I asked he cut their budget and slowly phase them out of existence.

USMC0351Grunt

SLOWLY? What’s wrong with shuttering the agency NOW, in ONE DAY, which is way too much time?

The other Jim

That would be great, but they don’t have the Senate now. Keep bringing out how evil the ATF is maybe by the time Trump is back in office the senate will have a majority and Gaetz bill to abolish ATF could work.

USMC0351Grunt

The sad thing is that WE, The People all sat on OUR asses during the first two years of Trump and did relatively NOTHING to get the Repubs off their malicious asses to work WITH Trump in doing great things for the good of the nation. THAT was on OUR watch! WE own that failure.

Dubi Loo

Roughly 2 weeks ago Gaetz introduced a bill to abolish the AFT.

The other Jim

Yes, like some of the guy are saying, a lot of this is for show but keeping up the attack on ATF is a good thing. By the time Trump gets back in office possibly the Senate will be Conservative Majority and by that time the ATF will be fully exposed as the Criminal Enterprise that it is to most of America and the votes to abolish will be there.

USMC0351Grunt

Don’t let go of that dream, but we DID have the House, Senate and White House for 2 years and pissed away the greatest opportunities we would have ever experienced in our lifetimes. I truly believe that there are far too many Dems infiltrating the Republican side of the fence, much like Trojan Horses. We see it in Congressman Tony Gonzales here in western Texas as we had seen with Congressman Will Hurd before him. The ONLY reason we chose either was to get rid of Democrat Pete Gallego to try and strengthen our longest section of the southern border.… Read more »

Looking at those coming accross Biden’s Open Border they look extremely well fed; $100 Sneakers and nice new clothes, $500 Cell Phones with Cell Phone Plans over $100 per month, etc…I don’t see any starving victims of oppression, infact most look too well fed and actually morbidly obese, especially the women. Most of the 6 million Biden let in illegally came here to feed off us. Trump won’t say now but I hope he has a plan to round up and deport all without papers…start with the ones who are rampantly stealing our identities for papers, rape, murderers, dope dealers,… Read more »
