Chicago, IL — A late-night argument near Chicago’s 31st Street Beach escalated into violence when a 17-year-old girl stabbed a 26-year-old woman, prompting the woman to defend herself with her legally carried firearm.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday in the 3000 block of South Fort Dearborn Drive. The two individuals were engaged in a heated verbal exchange when the teenager pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the woman in the arm.
The 26-year-old, a valid concealed carry license (CCL) and Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) cardholder, responded by drawing her firearm and shooting the teen in the shoulder. Both individuals were taken to nearby hospitals. The woman was treated for her injuries and is in good condition, while the teenager was treated, released, and subsequently taken into police custody.
The 17-year-old faces charges of aggravated battery with great bodily harm. This incident is part of a series of violent episodes at the beach, which has seen increased police presence following two recent fatal shootings.
Local leaders, including Alderman Lamont Robinson, are urging the Chicago Park District to consider earlier closures to enhance safety. The beach currently operates from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with swimming allowed from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. under lifeguard supervision.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, emphasizing the importance of legal self-defense measures in situations where individuals’ safety is threatened.
