Sig Sauer, Inc. has alleged in a federal court complaint that Springfield Armory’s Hellcat® magazines infringe two patents Sig owns. However, Springfield Armory is steadfast in its conviction that those claims are without merit. The innovative design of the Hellcat® magazine is our own and works only with the Hellcat®. The superior design of the Hellcat® magazine is able to hold more rounds in an overall smaller magazine. Springfield Armory’s Hellcat® magazine was independently awarded several patents of its own and has received numerous industry recognitions.

As long as the Hellcat doesn’t inadvertently discharge when dropped or drawn from a holster, Springfield should be okay. If it does inadvertently discharge when dropped or drawn from a holster, Sig might rightfully claim some type of patent infringement.

I’ve read a bunch of articles about this issue – and of course the attendant comments. Here is what I have decided – wasn’t the 13 round magazine for the P-35 (Browning Hi-Power) the first successful staggered magazine? So ‘technically’ any and all magazines using that technology would be (at least) a ‘clone’ of some sort. I ‘m sure that patent has long since expired.
Seems to me the only ones who will gain out of this brouhaha will the be liars er um lawyers.
The problem with Sig’s patent is that they did not invent anything new, nor did they employ any novel manufacturing process. They changed the angles of the sides of a stamped steel magazine to increase capacity, but that has been done before. This is like Ford suing Chevy for increasing trunk space after Ford bent the metal of their trunk to make it larger.
As always, the lawyers will win.
IKR! The Hellcat is the only micro pistol that has successfully endured TWO back-to-back 10,000 round torture tests WITH ZERO FAILURES! This was videotaped by independent media and test shooters, using Federal premium ammo. The videos are on Youtube. Springfield did a similar 10,000 round torture test before, with the XDM 10MM, and since, with the XDM Elite in 9mm. In every instance, there were no failures. It’s bad enough we have dorks in Washington ready to strip all of our gun rights, but now we are going to fight amongst ourselves? Just gives the Demorat gun grabbers more talking points so they can say crap like “most gun owners want more gun control.” Let’s save the arguing and fighting to keep our gun RIGHTS! We sure as hell can’t count on the NRA to do that anymore. I’m almost ashamed to be a member of that Org. any more.
I don’t really care about the case. Personally, I’ll never buy from Springfield because of their past practices. Apologies are great but they’ve shown their nature and can’t be trusted. I can forgive a poor hungry man for stealing a loaf of bread but I cannot forgive a rich man for the same.
How come Springfield possibly stealing from a competitor doesn’t surprise me. Remember the last time they and Rock River tried to screw over the rest of the gun makers in their state?
Glad I decided then to never purchase from either one of them.
