Lawful Chicago Woman Defends Her Daughter Against Home Intruder, Police Take Her Gun

A concealed carry license (CCL) holder in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood took swift action to defend her family when an intruder attempted to break into her home Saturday night.

The single mother of two, who has chosen to remain anonymous, recounted the terrifying moment when a man tried to climb through her daughter’s bedroom window. Without hesitation, she used her legally owned firearm to stop the threat, only to have it confiscated by police following the incident.

The incident unfolded around 10:45 p.m. on East 69th Street when the woman’s daughter alerted her that someone was trying to come through her window. “I just went into action,” the mother explained, stating that her protective instincts took over when she saw the man hanging onto the window.

After warning the intruder that she was armed, she fired a single shot, striking him in the leg. The man, later identified as 36-year-old Christopher Grady, was transported to the hospital in fair condition and has been charged with felony attempted burglary. While no further injuries were reported, the emotional toll on the family was significant.

“I’ve owned that firearm for years, and this was the first time I ever had to use it,” the mother said. “I didn’t want anything to happen to my children. I would rather it be me than them.”

Despite her responsible use of the gun in what many are calling a clear case of self-defense, the police confiscated her firearm—her only means of protection.

This has left her and her family feeling vulnerable. “It’s terrifying. Now I’m here, unprotected, and I just don’t feel safe,” she said.

Neighbors praised her decisive actions, with one resident stating;

“Good for her. If I was in the same situation, I’d do the exact same thing.” Another added, “It just goes to show you shouldn’t be breaking into people’s homes.”

As the investigation continues, the mother hopes to move her family to a safer location. While grateful that the suspect was caught, she is left uneasy about her ability to defend her family going forward.

“The police helped, but they took my gun. Now, what am I supposed to do if it happens again?” she asked.

For many pro-gun advocates, this case highlights a growing concern over the loss of self-defense rights, particularly in Democrat-run cities like Chicago. Despite the justified nature of her actions, this mother now faces an uncertain future and potential retaliation without her firearm.

Deplorable Bill

The woman was right in defending her daughter. I would have and have done the same thing. I doubt that I will ever report another shooting. If the bad guys want to report getting their @$$ shot off while trying to harm me or my family then so be it. It’s not as if I have any reason to trust the cops out here anyway. The fastest response time for p.d. out here has been at or near 26 minuets. A friend of mine was robed of his firearms. When the robber was caught the sheriff kept the firearms AT… Read more »

Do what ever it takes and come on down to the Free State of Florida where law enforcement supports your rights instead of stomping on them.

I like that last part, especially. Police should be made to provide her around the clock security at her home and on all errands, trips to work, trips to school, etc. Instead of melting or crushing confiscated guns, serviceable specimens should be maintained to issue to crime victims who have had theirs confiscated subsequent to investigation. Of course, we know that will never happen.

Sadly, this is an issue across the United States, even in supposedly “Free States” like South Carolina. You have a clear-cut justified shooting. Police confiscate the gun “as evidence” from the defender. Police run ballistics tests on the gun, the recovered bullet(s) (if any), and check the gun for stolen status and lineage (ownership) of the gun. In too many cases, they take their sweet time in doing this as the Solicitor et-al keep the owner in limbo while deciding what they are going to do with this clear cut case, if anything. I had a friend who was involved… Read more »

There it is!!! If you don’t want to lose your gun, you shoot them and fogettaboutit.

Let them call the cops on you for shooting them while he was breaking into your daughters bedroom. If they ask, why didn’t you report it, say ” its because you take so long to get here, I knew he would be gone by the time we ever saw the whites of your eyes officer, why do you think I have a gun”.
