Centralia, Pennsylvania – A Centralia homeowner successfully defended his family and property after confronting a man who broke into his home with a hatchet early Monday morning. The intruder, identified as 23-year-old Jose Armando Valdovinos Flores, allegedly entered the home with the intent to harm someone over an incident that occurred in Mexico over a year ago, according to court documents.
The situation unfolded when the homeowner’s 13-year-old granddaughter, who was asleep on the couch, noticed Valdovinos moving chairs in the kitchen while holding a hatchet. Pretending to be asleep, she managed to alert her grandfather to the presence of the intruder.
The grandfather, armed with a firearm equipped with a light, confronted Valdovinos, who placed the hatchet on a table without making any threats. The homeowner held Valdovinos at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived. Fortunately, no shots were fired during the incident.
Valdovinos, who does not speak English and had a Spanish-speaking officer assist in communication, claimed he was looking for a man related to the past altercation in Mexico. He admitted to bringing the hatchet to “finish the fight” but did not harm anyone in the house. According to investigators, the man Valdovinos was seeking was never identified.
While Valdovinos does not have a prior criminal record, Lewis County Superior Court Judge Joely Yeager expressed concern about community safety, citing Valdovinos’ own statements downplaying the seriousness of the offense. His bail was set at $150,000, and he remains in custody awaiting arraignment, with no mention of deportation if appropriate.
