In a startling incident of self-defense, residents of Garland, Maine, were forced to take decisive action when a man, later identified as Michael Thompson, 37, from Corinna, threatened their home with a stolen front-end loader. The dramatic confrontation occurredearly Tuesday morning when Thompson, driving the heavy machinery, aimed to crash through the residential property after causing destruction in the driveway.
The alarming situation unfolded around 5:30 a.m. after authorities were alerted to the theft of the large front-end loader from a nearby gravel pit. The homeowners reported that Thompson not only invaded their property but also commenced to destroy vehicles parked in the driveway. In a desperate bid to protect their home and lives, the residents confronted the impending threat by firing several rounds at the intruding vehicle.
Thompson, after being shot, managed to reverse the loader out of the driveway and attempted a hasty escape across a field and down a woodland road. His flight from the scene was short-lived as law enforcement officers located him shortly thereafter on Center Road in Charleston. He surrendered without further incident and admitted to being wounded in the altercation.
