Englewood, OH – January 3, 2025
In a chilling case of self-defense, a homeowner shot and killed an intruder early Friday morning after an attempted burglary on Overla Boulevard in Englewood. The incident unfolded around 2 a.m., shaking the typically quiet neighborhood.
Police identified the suspect as 43-year-old Matthew Culham. Authorities say Culham’s behavior was highly unusual for a burglar. Most would flee upon detection, but Culham confronted the homeowner even after breaking windows and being discovered on the property.
According to Englewood Police Chief Corey Follick, the couple living in the home acted in fear for their safety. The female resident called 911 after hearing someone trying to break in. During the call, her boyfriend armed himself and went to investigate the scene outside.
Thinking the robber had left, the homeowner went out to check for damage to his car and shed. Culham confronted the homeowner, who approached him aggressively. Fearing for his life, the homeowner fired three shots, hitting the intruder. Police arrived during the 911 call and found Culham lying in the side yard [DRT], where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chief Follick noted, “Most burglars flee when they realize a home is occupied. This individual’s actions were bizarre and confrontational.” Toxicology reports are pending to determine if drugs or other factors influenced Culham’s behavior.
Englewood averages fewer than one homicide per year, making this incident even more shocking. Police have stated that evidence collected at the scene supports the homeowner’s account, and the couple has been cooperative with the investigation.
The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case, though no charges have been filed against the homeowner. The community remains on edge as it awaits further updates.
The right to self-defense played a critical role in protecting innocent lives when seconds count. Tactically, it was better to let the Police clear the property and look for damage. 20/20.
