Manchester, KY – A 14-year-old Kentucky boy acted in self-defense early Saturday morning when he shot and killed two armed intruders attempting to steal firearms from a home in Clay County, according to Kentucky State Police (KSP).
Authorities say the home invasion occurred around 4:24 a.m. when two men forcibly entered the residence in Manchester, KY, with the intent to break into a gun safe. The juvenile resident, home alone at the time, discovered the intruders and saw them holding firearms.
Reacting swiftly, the teen retrieved a handgun, fired at both men and then escaped through a bedroom window to safety.
The intruders, later identified as 44-year-old Roger D. Smith of McKee and 51-year-old Jeffrey M. Allen of Manchester, were both struck by gunfire. Allen was pronounced dead at the scene (DRT), while Smith was transported to Advent Health Manchester, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Clay County Coroner confirmed their deaths, and autopsies were scheduled for Monday.
Local authorities praised the teen’s quick thinking in the face of imminent danger. “This appears to be a clear case of self-defense,” a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation stated.
KSP Detective Logan Gay is leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance from the Manchester Police Department and the Clay County Coroner’s Office.
This incident underscores the importance of the right to self-defense no matter what your age is, especially in situations where lives are at stake. The juvenile is not facing any charges at this time.
As more details emerge, the investigation will determine whether any additional legal actions are necessary. For now, the teen’s actions serve as a stone-cold reminder of why responsible firearm ownership and the right to protect one’s home remain vital in America.

kid should be getting a deputy sheriff auxiliary badge
I sincerely hope this lad has a good support system and is a believer. I’m sure glad it was them, instead of him.
Another heartwarming story! I am glad for the filler on the youth’s age. I saw an article about this a day or two ago, but details were scarce. These situations occur a few times each year in the US. Some kids can handle the responsibility of access to firearms and sadly, some cannot. Those who can and are trusted with access to loaded weapons can and do occasionally save the day, as in this incident. My parents “tested” me by leaving unloaded guns on the coffee table to see if I tried playing with them when I was a toddler… Read more »
Good for this kid. No telling how many more would have died if these scumbags were successful in stealing those guns.
This kid is a hero, he saved many lives, and a lot of terror.
These guys KNEW about the gun safe.
Good shooting there kid. These were not your average smash and grab burglars. These guys were going to hurt you and anyone else in their path. 2 taxpayer relief shots ended their career.
Excellent work, young person! Maybe their cronies will get the massage…”FAFO!”
Always did like “Sweater Girls” …Is that term a little too old for some of you ?
14 years old – first time I saw the intended victim’s age. Good for him – he must be well practiced, since given the results his shot placement, under stress, was MUCH more effective than we usually see from adults in these stories.Young people CAN be taught to shoot responsibly! At an even earlier age my Dad began my training, taking me to the range at least once a week, usually the pistol range. But I’m very glad that I never was in the same situation this young man found himself in.
I take it Kentucky doesn’t require firearms to be unloaded, stored in a locked place inaccessible to “children”, and ammunition stored elsewhere (and also inaccessible to “children”).
