David Alan “Super Dave” Harrington, a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran and one of the most respected firearms instructors in America, passed away on August 1, 2025, in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana. He was 64.

Harrington’s life was defined by service, skill, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Born in Baton Rouge in 1960, he graduated from Live Oak High School in 1979 and went on to serve nearly two decades in the U.S. military. From 1986 to 2004, he served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army, earning numerous commendations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Royal Thai Army Airborne Wings, and multiple Special Forces and intelligence honors.

He was a Ranger, a Green Beret, and a man who lived by his own standard: “Do the right thing, at the right time, every time.”

After retiring from military service, Harrington spent the second half of his life in the firearms and outdoor industry, where his teaching style and no-nonsense approach made him a sought-after trainer.

Through his companies, Combat Speed, LLC, and Martial Gun, he taught everyone from elite military operators to armed citizens, always pushing students to improve their mindset, skills, and confidence.

“He was a unique character in the training community, incredibly committed to sharing his thoughts on how people should train with their ‘blasters,’” said firearms instructor Rob Pincus, recalling their first meeting at SWAT Round Up nearly 20 years ago. “We had several of those conversations over the years, usually when we didn’t agree on the value of a specific drill or training practice. Dave was always willing to have the conversation, and I’m sure I gained from those discussions.”

Larry Vickers, a longtime friend, shared his own tribute: “Super Dave Harrington was a great friend of mine and I know that he’ll be missed by so many that were lucky enough to know him.”

For those who trained with him, Harrington’s methods were straightforward and rooted in real-world application.

“A man that didn’t do flash or extravagance but straight forward, this is how it’s done and why,” wrote Jeff Stroud. “A great teacher, a good man, and someone I will be forever thankful to have trained with.”

Harrington’s influence extended far beyond the range. He was a passionate defender of the Second Amendment, an avid hunter, a competitive shooter, and a man who inspired others through integrity, accountability, and loyalty. Known for his intensity and deep thinking, he left a mark on everyone who crossed his path.

He is survived by his stepbrother, Peter Harrington, extended family, and countless friends, students, and colleagues. Visitation will be held August 15 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East in Baton Rouge, with services following on August 16.

Harrington’s final days were spent surrounded by faith, often listening to Psalm 91. His family and friends say he would want to be remembered not with mourning, but with the same determination and drive he lived by — and perhaps, as he often said before starting something new: “OK, here goes.”

Funeral arrangements are planned for August 15th, 2025.
