Austin, TX -(AmmoLand.com)- The Texas State Rifle Association Foundation, Inc. (TSRAF), a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization that raises funds in support of a wide range of firearm-related public interest activities of the Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA), is proud to announce the winners of the Second Annual Whittington Center Essay Contest which posed the question ‘What does the Second Amendment mean to me?’

The contest winners included:

  • 1st Place Winner – Brianna B. (age 16) of Allen, Texas;
  • 2nd Place Winner – Madison F. (age 14) of Idalou, Texas;
  • 3rd Place Winner – Meagan R. (age 17) of Allen, Texas.

“Two of our winners were students of the Outdoor Adventures class in Allen High School,” said Texas State Rifle Association Foundation Operations Coordinator Angela Gerlich. “Their teacher, Mr. Anderson, was so excited about this opportunity for his students that he dedicated an entire week to review the history and significance of the Second Amendment and it’s importance to our nation. He then had the students split up into study groups, and their final assignment was to compose an essay for our contest. The students produced some fantastic essays. We look forward to even more student and teacher participation next year. “

The 2016 Whittington Center Essay Contest was first introduced in 2015 as an opportunity to send one Texas Youth to the NRA Whittington Center Annual Youth Adventure Camp. Located in Raton, N.M., the Whittington Center is known as a premier hunting, shooting and outdoor recreational facility. Through the generosity of a private donor, TSRAF is able to provide this opportunity to one Texas youth between the ages of 13 and 17 by participating in a 150-word essay contest. This year’s submissions totaled more than 120 entries, and with the assistance of judges from the Boy Scouts of America, the TSRAF board of directors, and the Texas Hunters Education Instructors Association (THEIA) the selections were narrowed down to these young ladies.

“Congratulations and thank you to all those that participated,” added Gerlich. “We look forward to hosting this contest in 2017 and can’t wait to read what our Texas Youth have to write.”
