ANJRPC Statement On School Security To NJ Senate & Assembly Education Committees

New Jersey – -(Ammoland.com)- Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs has issued a public statement on school security, for submission to a joint hearing of the Senate and Assembly Education Committees that took place yesterday afternoon at Camden County College in Cherry Hill.

There is no legislation being voted on at the hearing, but public testimony on school safety is being heard.

Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Club’s statement on behalf of New Jersey’s one million law-abiding firearms owners is below:

Statement of Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs
04/09/18 Joint Hearing on School Safety of the
New Jersey Senate and Assembly Education Committees
at Camden County College, Cherry Hill, NJ

The Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC) represents New Jersey’s one-million law-abiding firearms owners. ANJRPC urges the New Jersey legislature to immediately take the strongest possible actions to protect our children in the school setting, to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining entrance to school grounds, and to provide for preparedness necessary to stop an attack-in-progress in the shortest possible time frame. The actions ANJRPC urges the New Jersey legislature to take include the following:

1. Immediately perform a confidential analysis, in cooperation with law enforcement and other professionals, of every school located in New Jersey, to assess both general vulnerabilities applicable to all schools, as well as unique vulnerabilities applicable to specific individual schools. The National School Shield program has developed best practices in this area and also offers assistance grants. The legislature should dedicate any and all resources necessary to keeping our children safe.

2. Immediately develop, fund, and implement a plan to address any and all vulnerabilities identified in the confidential analysis recommended above. Again, the National School Shield program may be able to provide assistance in hardening our schools and making them less vulnerable. The legislature should dedicate any and all resources necessary to keeping our children safe.

3. Immediately mandate that there be a single point of entry in every school, and that the point of entry be appropriately staffed at all times to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access.

4. Immediately take steps to harden every classroom to make it impenetrable. If part of the school’s security plan is for students to shelter in place in the event of an attack rather than escaping or dispersing, then classrooms must be made impenetrable, so that intended victims are shielded from an attacker, rather than made more vulnerable by group assemblage in vulnerable areas. Doors, windows, and walls should be assessed for vulnerabilities, and reinforced appropriately.

5. Immediately mandate the presence of law enforcement or armed security in every school during classroom hours. Every school must have the capability of immediately stopping an attack-in-progress. The failure to install that capability in every school ensures needless loss of life in an emergency. Legislative proposals banning or restricting specific types of firearms hardware will be ignored by criminals and madmen, and accordingly will not make our schools safer. The specific capability to stop an attack-in-progress needs to exist in every school, ready for immediate deployment. Legislators are protected by armed security, and so are banks and celebrities. Our children deserve no less, and no cost is too high to keep them safe.

6. Immediately allow qualified, trained, and vetted school administrators and teachers, if they so desire, to have the capability of immediately stopping an attack-in-progress themselves. The Parkland tragedy demonstrated that even law enforcement on site can fail. If they do, then qualified, trained, and vetted school personnel, if they so desire, must have the capability to defend the students and themselves as a last resort. The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly held that police owe no legal duty to protect individual citizens from harm. If law enforcement fails to protect, as was the case in Parkland, victims must have the capability of fighting back themselves to stop an attack-in-progress and prevent needless loss of life.

VT Patriot

Grew up in ‘joisey’ and was lucky to leave many years ago. Lived here in VT for over 1/4 of a century. Today, our “rino” governor is signing a safe school bill pushed by the lib assembly following Parkland. This is a disease sweeping the country. Approximately 80% of Vermonters keep a 30-30 or 12 gauge behind the kitchen door. Unlocked and ready to click off the safety.
The last time this happened in America, a few folks said enuf! I believe it was called Lexington.
