AK-47 Meets 6.5 Creedmoor | Every Boomer’s Nightmare, an Accurate AK

Brandon Herrera, the AK Guy himself, has once again pushed the boundaries of what we thought was possible with the AK platform. In his latest video, he showcases a custom-built 6.5 Creedmoor AK, merging the long-range precision of one of today’s most respected cartridges with the rugged durability of the iconic AK. This project, years in the making, stands as a testament to the versatility of the AK platform.

The 6.5 Creedmoor: A Modern Long-Range Favorite

The 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge, developed by Hornady in 2007, has quickly earned a reputation for its impressive long-range performance. Known for its flat trajectory and reduced wind drift, the cartridge is a favorite among marksmen and hunters alike. Capable of precision at distances exceeding 1,000 yards, the 6.5 Creedmoor strikes a balance between power, accuracy, and manageable recoil, making it a natural choice for DMRs (Designated Marksman Rifles) and sniper platforms.

However, the Creedmoor’s presence in an AK is unconventional, to say the least. Typically, the AK platform is associated with intermediate cartridges like 7.62x39mm and 5.45x39mm—calibers designed for reliability over sheer precision. This build challenges those conventions, proving that the AK can do more than just “spray and pray.”

A Brief History of the AK Platform

The AK-47, developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the late 1940s, is one of the most recognizable and widely used rifles in the world. Celebrated for its reliability in adverse conditions, the AK has served in countless conflicts and is often considered the archetype of a combat rifle. Over the decades, the platform has seen numerous iterations, including the AKM, AK-74, and modernized variants like the AK-12.

The original design chambered in 7.62x39mm, prioritized simplicity, ease of production, and ruggedness. While these traits cemented the AK’s legendary status, accuracy and modularity were not its strong suits. Modern enthusiasts and manufacturers have since worked to close that gap, introducing precision barrels, advanced optics mounts, and custom builds like Herrera’s 6.5 Creedmoor AK.

Building the 6.5 Creedmoor AK

Herrera’s project involved starting with a Russian Saiga .308—a larger AK variant designed to accommodate the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. This provided the necessary receiver length and structural integrity for the 6.5 Creedmoor conversion. Key modifications included:

  • Custom Barrel: A 6.5 Creedmoor barrel was turned specifically for this build, a task requiring exceptional craftsmanship.
  • Enhanced Optics Mount: The RS Regulate mount paired with an EOTech Vudu 5-25x scope ensures the rifle can capitalize on the Creedmoor’s long-range potential.
  • Adjustable Stock: The Magpul PRS stock, fitted using a JMAC Customs adapter, allows for precise adjustments to improve shooter comfort and accuracy.
  • Gas System Tuning: A KNS adjustable gas piston ensures reliable cycling while accommodating the Creedmoor’s higher pressures.
  • Rugged Suppressor: A rugged QD suppressor rounds out the build, taming muzzle blast and enhancing shooter comfort.

The final product is a DMR-style rifle capable of delivering precision hits at extended ranges while retaining the unmistakable character of an AK.

Why Build a 6.5 Creedmoor AK?

This project isn’t just about pushing technical boundaries; it’s a statement. For years, critics of the AK have dismissed it as inferior to AR platforms when it comes to accuracy. Herrera’s build flips that narrative, proving that with the right components, the AK can hold its own in the precision realm.

Moreover, the build highlights the flexibility of the platform. While the AK may not be the first choice for long range shooting, this project shows that it can be adapted to excel in roles far beyond its original design.

By combining the legendary durability of the AK with the ballistic capabilities of the 6.5 Creedmoor, Brandon Herrera has created a rifle that’s as unique as it is functional.

Whether you’re a fan of the AK, a long-range shooting enthusiast, or simply appreciate the artistry of custom builds, this project offers something to admire. It’s a reminder that even the most established platforms can evolve—and that the spirit of experimentation is alive and well in the firearms community.

I’ve never found the AK to be interesting. And I had a Winchester XPR 6.5 Creedmore briefly. The rifle in and of itself was awful, that’s the main reason why I got rid of it. But I was shocked at how fast the barrel heated. It was a standard sporter barrel. Just three shots on a mild day, and the barrel sizzled. My 30-06’s don’t heat up nearly that fast. And it took forever to get the barrel cool again as well. Again, on a mild 60′ to 70′ day.

While there was a jovial campaign to get Herrera nominated to head the ATF, we all know he would not be confirmed. However, Trump could make a 3 month appointment as Acting Director … . Just saying.

Something just for fun…
Which do you prefer? AR15 or AK47/74 etc?
I vote AR15.

It’s not that an AK can’t be accurate, most have 3 or 4 minute of angle accuracy due to manufacturing tolerances and the amount of barrel whip and other accuracy destroying issues brought on by use of a long stroke gas piston design with the large amount of reciprocating mass coupled with the consistency of most 7.62×39 ammo.

Dear Editor’s and Staff,
Quite a silly statement. Every Boomer’s Nightmare, an Accurate AK!! What boomer wouldn’t like an accurate AK pray tell?? And how much does that “senior citizens” build cost?

How about chambering this rifle for the 6.5 Rem. Mag.? Or the 6.5 x 284 ?
