Florida Sheriff Tells Criminals “Expect to be Shot”

On December 27, 2024 WFIN in Florida quoted Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells about a recent home invasion and shooting. The Sheriff said:

“This is the state of Florida, if you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”

The incident happened on December 26, 2024 about 9 p.m. From wfin.com:

“He knew something bad was about to happen and he didn’t stall,” MCSO Sheriff Rick Wells said during a press conference Friday. “He grabbed his firearm [and] told his wife to get into a safe spot.”

The homeowner fired multiple rounds, hitting Flores-Toledo “several times,” while Soto-Mella fled the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

“I sat down next to the lanai, the door was open,” John Nuceder, who was visiting a family member in the neighborhood, told Fox 13. “I vividly heard three gunshots.”

Authorities said Flores-Toledo was initially reported to be in critical condition before being transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he died Friday morning.

“This is the state of Florida,” Wells said. “If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”

Deputies tracked down Soto-Mella, who was in the country illegally after his 90-day visa expired in September, using K9 units and arrested him a few blocks away, according to the sheriff’s office. The scene was secured and everyone involved was accounted for, posing no threat to the community.

The man who was killed, Flores-Toledo, was from Mexico. His immigration status was not mentioned. The man with him is from Chile and was in the country illegally.

Situational awareness is key. The homeowner noticed the two suspects before they broke in. This gave him time to access his firearm, gain tactical advantage, and advise his wife to seek shelter. It seems likely the couple had a plan for such a situation because they acted quickly. Too often, people see danger forming and refuse to accept what is happening. This leads to dangerous delays in an effective response. The United States is one of the very few jurisdictions that protect the inherent right of people to use firearms to defend themselves and, to varying degrees, their property.

Neither Mexico nor Chile has anywhere near the concentration of firearms in private hands that exists in the United States. A homeowner in the United States who shoots and kills a home invader is not particularly uncommon. sheriff who openly celebrates homeowners defending themselves against criminals by exercising their Second Amendment rights is becoming more common.  There have been several instances over the last few years.

For 150 years, Americans’ ability and willingness to defend their homes with deadly force were applauded. From about 1965 on, there was a growing trend to denigrate American citizens’ use of firearms to defend themselves, to denigrate the Second Amendment, and to slowly disarm Americans. That trend is dead. While not fully restored, the Second Amendment is being restored in legislatures and by the courts.

Kudos to Sheriff Rick Wells. He is an American politician/lawman who is stating the obvious. I expect him to be re-elected. He has been in office for almost eight years. He is married to Lupita Wells and has three sons.

Amen Mr. Sherriff. Why is it that the sheriff always supports second amendment and your using it and the police in the city think it is their job to protect you and that you shouldn’t have a gun. To me that is proof that all the people in the city including city government have a screw loose. I can’t imagine a mayor of a city telling the police to stand down when they are rioting, oops I mean peacefully protesting burning down buildings, cop shops with cops in it, throwing ice bottles at cops and using fireworks as bombs on… Read more »

The trend to denigrate exercising one’s rights is far from Dead, Dean. The gun grabbers are not ever going to respect the Constitution, nor cease trying to force their bad ideas on the country.

Some years ago after an illegal Haitian shot a police dog and wounded his handler, paralyzing him.
a reporter asked Sheriff Judd why they shot the guy 148 times. Judd dead panned it brilliantly by exclaiming….”We ran out of bullets!

I wish he was my sheriff! Our county chose a DEI hire. She’s as far gone as Tampon Tim. It’s a shame, that the Republicans in Florida, haven’t done more for their citizens 2A rights. While it’s nice to see a sheriff standing up and saying this, it’d be nicer still if the a deep red state’s governor and legislature repealed all their stupid gun laws and acted as a role model for other states to do the same. If Desantis want’s to be the next in line, after Trump, and Vance, he’s going to have to score some brownie… Read more »

Rick Wells knows that if the law biding citizens take out the trash it makes his job easier .
Thank you Rick for your law enforcement service for the people of Florida .

Hey man! Nice shot!

If criminals had received the appropriate operant conditioning by parents, when they were young, they wouldn’t end up in the crime statistic log.

Surprised because much of Manatee County is rather upscale, somewhat surprised by the favorable remarks by the sheriff. There are still some rural areas left in Manatee, but they are getting built up like they are here in Pasco. Our sheriff is a straight-up guy, but I don’t think he’s a 2a guy. Sheriff Grady is a media whore, but is loved by all

“If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”

this principle is straight out of God’s Law as preserved in the bible. I says in there that
“If a man is at home with his family and a stranger breaks in, he (homeowner) may strike him (unwanted intruder) that he die, and there shall be no bloodguilt upon him (homeowner)”

I din’t know whether this sheriff realises the source of this principle, but no matter. He is backed up 100% by God’s written law. Good enough or me……

Dean:
I don’t think it’s a great idea to name the spouse and family of the Sheriff. HE’s the Sheriff. Not his family. Naming his spouse (and now easy to figure out the kid’s names) you outted them for some nutso to go after the Sheriff’s family. Might as well have posted his home address…
