Grovetown, GA – A tense domestic altercation turned into a justified act of self-defense when a pregnant mother of two was forced to protect herself and her children from an aggressive ex-partner on Monday evening.
Devaris Hampton, 36, was shot after attempting to force his way into the mother’s home on the 7600 block of Main Street. The woman, nine months pregnant with Hampton’s child and already the mother of their 2-year-old daughter, had ended the relationship but found herself under siege as Hampton reportedly beat on the front door and shattered a window in an effort to gain entry.
Fearing for her safety and the safety of her children, including two minors present in the home, the woman fired a single shot, striking Hampton in the upper arm, according to Grovetown Police.
After being hit, Hampton fled to another home on Adams Lane, where he begged the residents to call for help.
Emergency responders treated Hampton at the scene before transporting him to a hospital. Following treatment, Hampton was arrested and taken to the Columbia County Detention Center on outstanding probation warrants and new charges, including Criminal Trespass – Family Violence.
Grovetown Police Chief Jamey Kitchens confirmed that the mother will not face charges, stating, “The investigation revealed that the female was acting in self-defense of not only herself and her unborn child, but two minor children that were in the home as well.”
This successful self-defense incident highlights the critical importance of gun rights for those who face imminent threats in their own homes. The mother, who remained unharmed physically, had alerted family members to call police before the situation escalated, demonstrating her concern for law enforcement intervention before resorting to defensive action.
