CHICAGO – In a dramatic encounter that unfolded in the Homan Square neighborhood, a 28-year-old garbage truck driver, who is a licensed Concealed Carry License (CCL) holder, successfully defended himself against two armed robbers early Friday morning, resulting in one fatality (DRT shot in the head) and one critical injury.
At approximately 5:15 a.m. on the 900 block of South Homan Avenue, near DRW College Prep, the driver was approached by two men during his shift.
The suspects, armed and demanding, announced a robbery. Faced with the immediate threat, the driver drew his legally carried firearm, and a shootout ensued.
The confrontation left a 42-year-old suspect dead from a gunshot wound to the head, pronounced at the scene. His accomplice, a 20-year-old man, suffered a neck wound and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition. Remarkably, the driver was not shot but was later taken to St. Anthony Hospital for a stress-related evaluation, where he was listed in good condition.
Authorities confirmed the driver’s possession of both a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and a CCL, highlighting his legal right to carry and use the firearm in self-defense. Two weapons were recovered at the scene, and the surviving suspect faces pending charges.
This latest incident underscores the crucial role that training and legal firearm possession can play in personal safety. Richard Pearson, Executive Director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, remarked on the increasing number of CCL holders who successfully defend themselves in life-threatening situations. He emphasized the importance of firearm safety training, which likely contributed to the favorable outcome for the driver.
As the community processes this event, it serves as a potent reminder of the life-and-death decisions faced by citizens in moments of crisis and the undeniable value of preparedness and legal firearm ownership.

Puts a new spin on “garbage collection.” I sincerely hope the collector suffers no further consequences.

(This WAS Chicago, after all.) When I lived there, the City of Chicago picked up garbage, with garbage men being city employees, A crew always came with the truck. Illinois has one less dirtbag and another who might think twice about his actions when he gets out of jail if he survives the shot to his neck .
Good deal
“Give me everything you have!” isn’t something I would say to a garbage truck driver.
I assume they needed the truck to carry out the opening scene from Commando.
needs a little more training, but a good start…..would make paul kersey proud
Robbing the garbage man. He was probably on Candid Camera.
Safety training made the driver a fast and accurate shooter? Interesting.
Up until 2021under Illinois Law the wounded perp would have been charged with murder for the death of his co perp by the Victim . But Chicago keeps “softening ” the Criminal Law in Illinois , and removed that part of the Criminal Law in Illinois in 2021 .
