Why The AR-10 Belongs in Your Arsenal

The AR-10 might not get as much attention as its smaller, lighter cousin, the AR-15, but it’s a powerhouse you shouldn’t overlook.

With its hard-hitting .308 Winchester or 7.62×51 NATO chambering, the AR-10 delivers the range, stopping power, and versatility needed for everything from property defense to worst-case SHTF scenarios.

In this article, we’ll break down what makes the AR-10 indispensable, from its advantages on the battlefield to top ammo options, optic setups, and sling configurations to maximize its potential.

Benefits of the AR-10

Looking for a rifle that doesn’t just meet expectations but blows them out of the water? Enter the AR-10—a powerhouse that combines the best of both worlds: the versatility of a carbine and the punch of a high-powered precision rifle. Here’s why the AR-10 should be the next addition to your arsenal:

  • Stopping Power: Chambered in the hard-hitting .308 or 7.62×51 NATO rounds, the AR-10 delivers a level of stopping power that smaller calibers like the 5.56 NATO simply can’t match. When it comes to defense scenarios where you might face larger threats or need to ensure immediate stopping power, this rifle steps up to the plate.
  • Defeating Body Armor: In a worst-case SHTF (S**t Hits The Fan) scenario, adversaries might be equipped with higher levels of body armor. The AR-10’s powerful rounds have a better chance of penetrating protective gear that would stop smaller calibers. This means you stay effective even when opponents are geared up.
  • Extended Effective Range: When it comes to reaching out and touching targets at a distance, the AR-10 truly shines. While an AR-15 might start to struggle beyond 300-500 yards, the AR-10 confidently hits targets at 800 yards and beyond. Whether you’re defending your property or need to keep threats at a distance, this rifle has you covered.

And when the stakes are high, having a reliable and powerful rifle can make all the difference.

Ammo Selection for the AR-10

When it comes to setting up your AR-10, picking the right ammo is just as important as the rifle itself. Whether you’re defending your property, preparing for worst-case scenarios, or dialing in for precision shots at longer distances, having the right rounds on hand makes all the difference. Here’s a breakdown of what works best for each situation:

Property Defense

For defending your land—whether it’s a few acres or a sprawling property—you want ammo that’s accurate, reliable, and capable of stopping a threat. HOP Munitions 168-grain HPBT (Hollow Point Boat Tail) is a solid choice.

It’s known for its accuracy and dependable expansion, making it effective for mid-to-long-range shots where you might need to reach out and hit a target cleanly.

Another option to consider is 147-grain 7.62×51 NATO FMJ (Full Metal Jacket). FMJ rounds are affordable and consistent, offering good penetration without a lot of frills. They’re not designed to expand, but if you’re covering open spaces and need something dependable, they get the job done.

SHTF Scenarios

If you’re gearing up for a situation where all bets are off, versatility is key. A mix of rounds ensures you’re ready for whatever comes your way—close encounters or long-range problems.

HOP Munitions 190-grain Subsonic All Copper Rapid Expanding Round is built for suppressed setups, making it quiet while still packing enough punch to deal with serious threats.

Hornady 308 Win 155-grain TAP (Tactical Application Police) is Fast and effective. The TAP round is designed to stop threats quickly, with reliable performance for high-stress situations. It’s a favorite for those who want ammo they can trust when things go sideways.

By having both subsonic and supersonic options in your kit, you’re ready to handle threats up close or at a distance.

Precision Shooting

If you’re looking to stretch the legs on your AR-10 and make shots count at long distances, you need consistent and accurate ammo. For this, match-grade rounds are the way to go.

HOP Munitions 168-grain HPBT is A tried-and-true option for accuracy. This round is perfect for dialing in your shots and getting tight groups, whether you’re target shooting or need precision in a real-world scenario.

Hornady ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding) with its high ballistic coefficient stays flat and hits hard at longer ranges. It’s built for hunters and precision shooters alike who need reliability when the target is far out.

There are plenty of other options out there to choose from, but these are just a few that I’ve had personal experience with and can stand behind.

Optics for the AR-10: Enhancing Precision and Versatility

Equipping your AR-10 with the right optic can significantly enhance its versatility. The increased range and power of the .308 or 7.62×51 NATO rounds make a quality optic essential for maximizing the rifle’s capability. Your environment and threat matrix will dictate which optic to go with for your AR-10 setup. What works for me may not work for you, so keep that in mind. These are just some general guidelines to point you in a direction.

  • Closer-Range Engagements: A red dot sight or holographic sight is ideal for rapid target acquisition at close range. These sights allow you to maintain a clear sight picture while moving quickly in confined spaces. The EOTech EXPS3 or Aimpoint PRO are both excellent choices, providing durability and battery life to withstand intense, close-quarters situations. Paired with a magnifier, these sights can even extend your effective range when needed.
  • Property Defense and SHTF: Defending a larger property often means needing to identify and engage threats at medium distances, where accuracy and clarity are critical. A Low Power Variable Optic (LPVO), like the Vortex Viper PST 1-6×24 or the Primary Arms SLx 1-8×24, can offer a great balance of close-to-mid-range engagement. These scopes allow you to transition from a 1x power for close-quarters encounters to 6x or 8x magnification for longer-range shots, making them versatile and suitable for a broad range of engagements.
  • Long-Range Precision: for those longer distance engagements, you may need maximum flexibility, a higher-magnification scope can make the AR-10 effective out to its maximum range. For long-range precision, the Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18×44 or the Trijicon Credo HX 2.5-15×42 are top options. These scopes offer precise adjustments, high-quality glass, and enough magnification to identify and neutralize threats at extended distances. With these optics, the AR-10 can be effectively used for defensive marksman roles in rural or wide-open environments.

Sling Configurations for the AR-10

A well-chosen sling can significantly enhance the usability of your AR-10 by providing better control, hands-free capability, and quick transitions. Given the AR-10’s weight and power, a sling is essential for handling and maneuverability in tactical situations. Due to the large frame of an AR-10 and increased weight, I recommend running a 2-point sling.

The two-point sling is a favorite among shooters for its stability and versatility, making it an excellent choice for both property defense and SHTF scenarios. This configuration allows you to carry the rifle securely across your body, freeing your hands for other tasks while keeping the rifle retained yet ready.

Adjustable two-point slings, such as the Blue Force Gear Padded Vickers Sling or Magpul MS1, let you quickly adjust the tension to switch from a loose carry position to a more secure, close-to-the-body setup when transitioning to action.

I’ve used both of these slings and personally prefer the Magpul MS1.

Conclusion

The AR-10 is a reliable, versatile rifle that excels in defensive roles requiring range and stopping power. Its .308 or 7.62×51 NATO chambering is ideal for property defense, home security, or SHTF scenarios.

Pairing it with the right ammo, optics, and sling setup ensures you’re ready for anything.

With the AR-10 in your hands and the proper setup for your environment, you have a dependable tool to stay prepared and protected in any situation.

Guns are like Lays potato chips….ya can’t stop with one.

The hardest target to find is the one always on the move not the one dug in like an Alabama tick. If you are always on the move and your rifle breaks, you need to be able to get parts. The AR10 does not have a designated military standard and all the different brands are not interchangeable and until they are, I will not own one.

Good luck with that.

Ya need guns in all government calibers for ammo replenishment…..

A sling isn’t just for transportation, it’s also for shooting stability. My BFG Vickers sling is good for transportation and can provide some support in a hasty deployment. It’s well suited for the same short- to medium-range engagements as a smaller caliber, lighter rifle like the AR-15 or AR-18. The Magpul MS1 can be configured with a loop around the support arm’s bicep (like a classic M1907 or M1923 sling, or a cheap ubiquitous GI sling), and tensioned-up behind the support hand to build a rock-solid shooting position. It’s well suited for the same medium- to longer-range engagements as a… Read more »

My SFAR has become my go to. I’ve had no issues with any ammo and get MOA to 500yds with two factory brands. It’s lightweight and very carryable.
The biggest issue I’ve seen is guys who think the gas block is a radio dial. I’ve never touched mine and have no idea what it’s even set on. I’ll not touch it until I run a suppressor.
There is no need to constantly turn it. Learn to shoot and leave it alone.

There are SO MANY calibers for the ar10, Be careful matching uppers to lowers. THere is a dpms pattern lower, and a armalite pattern lower. The dpms style seems more popular, so when shopping caliber uppers, make sure they fit the lower. Here is an example of some of the caliber uppers you can use…:List of AR platform cartridges – Wikipedia

From the intro of the repeat article from 5 months ago: “Equip your loadout with the AR-10: unmatched stopping power”,  He had all of it correct with the exception of one thing. He didn’t say that unmatched meant that no one makes any of them the same and that there is no standard. So, when the SHTF if you don’t have spare parts to fix yours when it is broken, you have to find one that is the same brand and make and if you can do that, odds are that one is broken with the same dam problem you… Read more »

Are all parts interchangable in the rifles listed in this article?

My M1-A isn’t broke so no need to fix it with an AR-10. But if you’ve got to have an AR, the AR-10 is the only one that makes sense. Unless you just want a rabbit gun.

I’d like to use this platform to reveal that Bump Stocks are back for sale at Battle Creek! I wouldn’t try one on a AR10 but it might be possible. Live Free or Die! I never wanted one before but now I need one.
