Simi Valley, CA – A California homeowner fatally shot a knife-wielding intruder early Wednesday morning after the man broke into the family’s Simi Valley home. Police later confirmed the suspect was the wife’s ex-boyfriend, who had a history of showing up at the residence uninvited.

The Simi Valley Police Department said officers responded around 12:50 a.m. to reports of gunshots on the 4100 block of Eileen Street. Moments later, a homeowner called to report that he had shot an intruder during a violent confrontation.

Investigators said the ex-boyfriend broke into the garage armed with a knife. The current husband confronted him and fired his handgun in defense of his family. The intruder was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

“There’s a history here. The wife had previously sought a temporary restraining order against the suspect,” said Sgt. Rick Morton of the Simi Valley Police Department. “At some point during the break-in, an altercation occurred and shots were fired.”

Two children were inside the home at the time of the incident. Neither they nor their parents were harmed.

The husband cooperated fully with police and was interviewed at the station. As of now, no charges have been filed, though authorities said the case remains under investigation.

This shooting underscores the reality many gun owners know all too well: when seconds count, it’s up to you to protect your loved ones. While California’s gun laws often restrict homeowners, this case highlights why the right to keep and bear arms is essential—especially when dealing with violent stalkers who ignore court orders.

The names of the husband, wife, and suspect have not been released.

You are your own First Responder. Jimmy Carter did us a great disservice when he coined that term and applied it to professional responders. No disrespect intended, it is the simple fact of the matter. Actions taken in the first ten minutes of an emergency determine the outcome. Response times exceed that ten minutes in most jurisdictions. Have a firearm and the skills to employ it or them. Have a trauma kit and the skills to employ it. Have basic firefighting gear in your home and vehicle and know how to use it. Stack the odds in your favor.

It’s California! The intruder had every right to expect he targeted a gun free zone.
