Shooter’s Choice Universal Gun Cleaning Kit | Gear Review

THE SHOOTER’S CHOICE UNIVERSAL CLEANING KIT

The Shooter’s Choice Universal Cleaning Kit is a nicely stocked, full-service gun cleaning kit. It has pretty much all of the items you will need to clean all of the popular calibers. Ok, I’m old school, so I really like that it has two 5-piece screw together brass gun cleaning rods. The smaller rod covers calibers .22 up to .270, and the larger diameter T-handle and rod sections are for .30 cal. and larger. To clean your shotguns, there is an adapter that you screw into the final section that will handle the larger brushes and cotton mops.

SHOTGUN ADAPTER

If I listed every item, it would take a whole page, so I’m just going to list out the subgroups, and you’ll have to realize that in each subgroup, there might be up to 10 individual items. So with that said, here are the subgroups:

  • 10 cotton mops
  • 10 Pierce Point Jags
  • 3 slotted tips
  • 10 bore brushes
  • 3 blue nylon/bronze brushes
  • 2 bore guides
  • 1 double-ended pick
  • 2 5pc. cleaning rods
  • shotgun brush adapter
  • cleaning patches
  • small bottle of FP-0 lubricant
  • 1 5.56 chamber brush
  • A few foam-tipped Swabs
T-shaped Handles for Cleaning Rods

I like that the rods have a plastic T swivel handle. This type of handle allows me to get a firm grip on the cleaning rod and the swivel action allows me to perfectly position my grip. The rods are brass which will not mar your rifling. I see too many rods now that are stainless and only have a rubberized coating. I’m afraid that in due time that the coating will chip off thereby exposing the stainless-steel rod which could damage my rifling.

I really like this kit. I’d almost classify it as compact since it is flat and pretty small compared to my Otis Elite Range Box. Yet it has so many items in it and is capable of doing all of your gun cleaning tasks, from pistols to rifles to shotguns. So, I don’t know how to classify it: compact or full size? I’ll let you decide.

Now I’d like to tell you what really appeals to me about the Shooter’s Choice Universal Cleaning Kit. Since it is so compact, I plan on throwing it in the truck to take up to the mountains for my deer, elk, and bear hunting trips. Due to encountering mountain showers year-round and heavy snows while elk hunting, I usually try to remember to throw in some gun oil to lube up my rifle at night in camp after a wet day, but this kit will allow me to be able to oil up the barrel.

But here’s why I am really interested in taking this kit along. Not that I’ve ever had it happen but you always hear about hunters that fall and get mud or snow packed into their barrels. Hopefully they notice the barrel obstruction before they shoot and blow up the barrel. But in the best-case scenario, you notice that the barrel is obstructed after your fall. You’re still sunk even though you didn’t blow up your barrel. You can’t keep hunting!

Like I said above, I’ve never crammed a boatload of mud or snow up my barrel, but I have had a few mishaps. One time, a kid I took hunting shot a deer up on top of a mountain. We went hauling back to the truck to get our backpacks so we could bone it out and pack it out.

Down below I saw a tree that had fallen across the small river. We used it to cross the river which shaved a half mile hike off our trek back to the truck. Unfortunately, due to there being an early morning frost covering the log, I slipped and fell off in the river. My rifle went flying up in the air and landed on the bottom of the river. I dug it out of the river, poured water out of the barrel and we headed on to get our packs.

Another time, while duck hunting in Alaska, I stepped off into a hole while retrieving a duck and face planted into a moss bed, my Mossberg shotgun and all. I finally broke free of the moss and came up gasping for air. Having the Shooter’s Choice Universal Cleaning Kit on these two hunts would have been nice. Since this kit has metal cleaning rods, you’ll be able to knock out any obstructions. That alone makes this kit worth its weight in gold.

The MSRP on the Shooter’s Choice Universal Cleaning Kit is $49.99. You get a lot of items in this kit for $49.99.

IMOA, the Shooter’s Choice Universal Cleaning Kit appears to be a good choice for the new shooter or collectors starting out. I’d guess anyone that’s been shooting and collecting for a while has a couple of individual cleaning kits already, I’ve been acquiring kits for each gauge or caliber purchased and now have a few shotgun kits, .30 caliber rifle kits, .22 rifle kits, .22 pistol kits and large bore pistol kits on hand. I have kits scattered in my range bag, camping and hunting packs and keep a couple of kits in my truck as back up.

The MSRP on this specific item is not $49.99, as that would be a good price, a very good price indeed. The MSRP as stated on Shooter’s Choice web site is $74.99. Quite a difference. Amazon has it for $72.07 with free shipping.
