A quiet Saturday evening in Miami-Dade’s Richmond Heights neighborhood turned violent when four men tried to force their way into a home—only to be met by a prepared homeowner who fought back to protect himself and his mother.
Deputies say the attempted home invasion happened around 6:40 p.m. near Southwest 141st Street and 110th Avenue. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, four suspects “tried to force themselves inside a home,” and the homeowner responded by firing on them, striking one of the intruders.
A Frantic Moment Turns Into Self-Defense
The homeowner later spoke with NBC6 and said everything happened fast, and his first concern was the safety of his mother.
He recalled hearing her yell at the men outside: “Get off my porch, I’m going to call 911.” He told the station that at that moment, “I became frantic and I started looking for my gun.”
He said one man was sitting on the porch while three others stood in the yard. When he stepped outside to scare them off, one of the men allegedly tried to rush into the house. That’s when he opened fire.
“I wasn’t trying to kill him, but when he barged in, I was scared for my life,” the homeowner told NBC6. “Not only for my life, I was scared for my mom.”
One Intruder Killed, Three on the Run
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the injured suspect—26-year-old Quanterry Alvin Whitley—to a hospital, where he died. The three remaining suspects took off and have not been found.
Ring camera video obtained by CBS News Miami captured the sound of the gunfire and the chaos in the moments after the confrontation. Neighbors told reporters they heard two shots before sirens flooded the block.
One nearby resident, Arlene Richardson, told CBS Miami she was stunned that something like this happened just houses away. “Basically, this is a quiet neighborhood. We’ve been here over 30 years and we’ve never had any problems on this street,” she said.
A Shaken but Resolute Homeowner
Even though police say he acted in defense of his family, the homeowner is still grappling with the trauma.
“It’s unfortunate. It’s the worst night of my life,” he said. Later, he added, “I’m going to need years and years of therapy. Worst night of my life. I wish it never happened.”
Deputies Still Searching for Suspects
Miami-Dade deputies have not released the names of the remaining suspects and have not said whether the would-be intruders had any connection to the homeowner. The Homicide Bureau continues to investigate.

Owning a gun for self defense requires being mentally prepared to use it. Sometimes, an outcome of that is a DRT perp. Yes, the worst day of a homeowner’s life.

“When he stepped outside to scare them off…” Why? And “scare them off” how… by brandishing a weapon? At that point–one sitting on the porch and three standing in the yard–there was no life-threatening situation, no attempted break-in, just four trespassers in the front yard. And if he “became frantic and started looking for [his] gun”, did he not also have time to call police?
