USA – -(Ammoland.com)- Criterion Barrels, Sharps Bros, and Rifle Dynamics have teamed up in an attempt to stretch the accuracy potential and maximum effective range of the AK rifle platform to its limit.

This prototype rifle features a hand lapped 18″ 416R stainless steel salt bath nitrided Criterion barrel chambered in 6.5 Grendel.

The selection of the 6.5 Grendel cartridge allows for straightforward compatibility with pre-existing 7.62×39 components utilizing loads that allow for a much higher ballistic coefficient.

These rifles are built around a variant of the Sharps Bros MB47 receiver designed to accept 6.5 Grendel Vepr magazines. Other components on this demo rifle include an SLR Rifleworks handguard, and Leupold Optics glass affixed by a Sabrewerks13 KOP mount. The bolt carrier group is identical to a standard 7.62×39 rifle configuration.

Sharps Bros and Rifle Dynamics intend to test this rifle at long range using a custom Hornady 123 SST load that should remain supersonic out past 1,000 yards.

Upon successful testing of this prototype build, Sharps Bros will be the primary distributor of receivers and barrels for this rifle platform. These demo rifles will be on display during SHOT Show at the Rifle Dynamics open house on January 18th at their Las Vegas production facility.

Please contact Sharps Bros for information pertaining to this new rifle design.

Yes let’s use vepr mags because you know someone that already has a vepr in 6.5 Grendel will buy our rifle for 3x as much. No.. Never mind that AR mag wells exist for AKs and AR mags are easily modified to work with the 6.5. Let’s make this insanely expensive rifle use ludicrously over priced unattainable mags! It’s an AK! You are half assing the most important aspects and focusing on the least important features. People don’t buy an AK to shoot in matches! They buy it for the rugged durability reliability and ease of use. It doesn’t hurt… Read more »

I have a yugo m72 and m70 set up ready to go, all dependent on the journal outside diameter. The 18 inch barrel might require after market hand guard and gas tubes, but since you’re not changing the stroke, maybe not. All my gas holes are 90 degrees, which has improved on accuracy. The m70 gas block journal would be perfect. A 1:9.5 twist, maybe. I’ve run into a couple barrels that weren’t true, offset by a half of a degree. Crappy USA barrels. You can fix that, right? Thanks!

Oh,now THIS has my interest… I know that there’s talk of the Serbs gradually transitioning over to the 6.5 Grendel from the 7.62×39…one would hope this is a sign of things to come.
