BELLEVUE, WA – -(AmmoLand.com)- Declaring that so-called “gun-free zones are shooting galleries for maniacs,” the Second Amendment Foundation today is calling for an end to such designations by launching an advertising campaign aimed at print and online publications.
“Without a self-defense option,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, “we are all at greater risk.”
The campaign has a simple message: “You’re a sitting duck in a gun-free zone.” The ad may be seen below or here.
Gottlieb referred to a report from the Crime Prevention Research Center that 98 percent of mass public shootings since 1950 occurred in places where citizens are prohibited from having firearms. He noted that in Europe, “every mass public shooting has occurred in a gun-free zone.”
He pointed to mass shootings at schools, shopping malls, movie theaters and churches as prime examples where “gun-free zone” designations did not prevent tragedies, but may actually have enabled crazed killers by making it impossible for the victims to fight back.
“Whether you’re talking about a high school in Florida, a theater in Colorado or a mall in Nebraska,” Gottlieb observed, “the common denominator has been that they all prohibited firearms on the premises. Of course, in every case, that ban had zero effect on the shooters who took innocent lives. There are numerous other examples where the gun-free mindset has been worse than a failure, and history has provided us the grim casualty counts to prove it.
“The evidence shows that gun-free zones are not the answer,” he stated. “Indeed, they provide an added danger because they prevent legally armed citizens from defending themselves and others, while creating the mere illusion of safety.
“For more than two decades,” Gottlieb said, “the U.S. has perpetuated a false sense of security with gun-free zones. It’s time to end this dangerous folly. Nobody wants to be a sitting duck in a maniac’s shooting gallery.”
You’re a sitting duck in a gun-free zone.
The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nation’s oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 650,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control.
We need some non-permanent stickers with a photo of a sitting duck to place on these gun free zone signs.
They should rightly be called “Free Fire Zones” as opposed to Gun Free. On the plus side, in my State of Marxachusettes, except where prohibited by specific laws (Banks, Schools, Government buildings, etc.) signage prohibiting the carrying of firearms is only a suggestion. You are subject to being given a no trespass order, but if you have an LTC, no laws are being violated for simple possession of a firearm.
Okay, here’s how we solve this problem. First, any and all politicians, bureaucrats, administrators, school board members etc are to be arrested and charged as an accessory to the crime for creating and fostering unsafe, unsecured
soft targets. Why? Because it was their decision to remove any form of deterent to give people a chance of survival. They also failed to provide full time law enforcement or security like court houses, banks and theme parks. These decisions must have consequences or they will continue to restrict law abiding victims.
Yup. Keep Calm and Carry On. In my state, there are very specific signage mandates for Certified Defenseless Victim Zones to be enforcable. If those signs are not to standard in design and placement, there ARE no signs. Even them, worst case is IF you are “made” you can be asked to remove your gun from the property, YOU can return, but unarmed. If you refuse, you can be charged with criminal tresspass, a non-disqualifying crime. One notable exception is bars/taverns. NO ONE except on duty employees may be armed inside one of those places. Which leads to a great… Read more »
But you can’t mean the law that shotgun Joe got passed into law. Now he wants to be our president and he is in first place in the running. Joe will make all of sitting ducks if he gets the chance. I do like the idea of throwing this back into their faces, though.
Like all gun control legislation that has been enacted, this GFZ nonsense has proven to be another boondoggle. Can we track down the idiots that proposed this concept and publicly humiliate them with the results of the law?
Absolutely, gun free zones encourage mass shootings. Gun free zones are killing fields to anyone who is of that frame of mind. Gun free zones do exactly opposite of what they were proposed to do, they don’t save lives, they make mass murder possible. The worst mass shooting in the U.S., that I am aware of, happened in Las Vegas in October a few years ago. There was lots of security and law enforcement on site. More than 1K rounds were fired by the bad guys–yes that was supposed to be plural–and the shooting was stopped by the shooters themselves,… Read more »
I have been saying for years…the way to end mass shootings will COST NOTHING to implement, by simply outlawing the Gun-Free Death-Zone. If you are legally able to carry, and wish to, then do so. If you don’t, then don’t. Just the fact that SOMEONE might be armed at a location will prevent the slaughter that occurs with impunity today.
