I notice that the ones Sootch is holding clearly say 5.56 on them. Will these new 40 round mags also work with .223 rounds? My other mags all work with either one.
Pressure is the primary difference separating the .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm. … The .223s are loaded to lower pressures and velocities compared to 5.56mm. Due to its lower pressure, you can safely fire .223 Rem. ammunition in a 5.56mm chambered gun; however, the same cannot be said in the reverse. the .223 Remington and the 5.56 Nato are identical. The differences between the cartridges has to do with case wall thickness and how they are loaded. If you want to shoot either type of ammo in your gun, rechamber it to 223 Wylde. Both will fit in Magpul Magazines.
Pastor, the real question isn’t the mag, it’s the rifle. If your rifle barrel says 5.56 it will handle either round. If it says Wylde, it will handle either. JDub is correct about pressures, the chamber in 5.56 is set to allow a slightly longer distance before the rifling is engaged, but the pressure is the main difference. If your barrel says .223, you need to only shoot that or change the barrel. OTOH, you could just get another rifle. %-) Remember 2 is 1, 1 is none.
