As of January 1, 2024, a new law goes into effect that will directly punish Illinois gun owners for exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. The new law is called the “Protect Illinois Communities Act” (PICA). The law prohibits the ownership, sale, and purchase of various semiautomatic centerfire firearms with certain features. Not only does PICA ban the transfer of certain Firearms and magazines, but it also includes mandatory registration of all newly banned equipment.
What exactly does that mean? It means the semi-automatic rifle you’ve had for years and enjoyed legally has now been deemed illegal and dangerous to society by politicians.
As a result, you are a criminal for owning it, and you must turn yourself in by giving a list of your newly illegal firearms to the Illinois government. What happens next, we question.
Not only is the new Illinois gun ban a violation of Illinoisan’s 2nd Amendment rights, but it also blatantly attacks their 5th Amendment rights by requiring gun owners to participate in this State-run gun registry.
The 5th Amendment clearly states, “nor shall any person be subject for the same offense, to be twice put in jeopardy of life, or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”
The forced registration component of this new law brings with it the fear of self-incrimination for many gun owners across Illinois. What if there was a product that would take your AR out of the “assault weapons” category?
The brilliant minds at a company called Kali Key have created a product that transforms the AR into a manually operated bolt action rifle without requiring any permanent modifications. How does it work? The Kali Key simply replaces your semi-auto BCG, potentially removing your AR from the “assault weapon” category altogether. All state gun laws are written differently, but this product is starting to turn some heads and may answer the blue state semi-auto tyranny many are experiencing. Although removing the semi-auto capability may not be your first choice, it is fully reversible and could be a valid option while Attorneys fight to restore the 2nd Amendment in several States across America.
Attorney David Sigale, who wrote an opinion on Kali Key, identified four primary benefits of the Kali Key in the State of Illinois:
- No Registration Requirement: If an Illinois resident lawfully owns an assault weapon as of January 10, 2023, that firearm may be kept so long as it is registered by January 1, 2024. The installation of the Kali Key, removing the firearm from the definition of an assault weapon, should eliminate the registration requirement.
- Acquiring New Firearms: If a purchaser of an AR platform firearm is able to have the Kali Key installed before legally purchasing and taking possession of the firearm, then the end user would not be purchasing/receiving a prohibited firearm.
- FFL Survival: An FFL can utilize the Kali Key to produce (Type 07) or import new AR platform firearms for sale in Illinois, provided they originate as bolt-action firearms via the Kali Key. If purchased before the January 10, 2023 cutoff, FFLs can convert their AR-15 inventory into bolt-action via the Kali Key for sale in Illinois.
- Facilitate Legal Transfers: “Assault weapons” owned legally before January 10, 2023, can be kept if registered but not transferred within Illinois. Installing the Kali Key and removing the firearm from the definition of an “assault weapon” should remove that restriction.
One of Kali Key’s goals is to use sales to directly support grassroots 2A organizations like San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), which works closely with FPC, CalGuns, and Gun Owners of California (GOC). Direct collaboration has, in small part, funded several 2A lawsuits and victories like Miller v Bonta (the California “AW” ban suit) and Duncan v Bonta (the California standard capacity magazine suit). Kali Key is also working with Gun Owners of America.
Attorney David Sigale said, “I believe that the Kali Key, when installed in an otherwise prohibited AR platform prior to bringing the firearm into the State, and when done in a permanent (as possible) manner, removes the firearm from the category of “assault weapon” under Illinois law. This means the firearm can be both possessed in Illinois, and possessed without registration.”
The folks at Kali Key recognize that this product may only be a placeholder until semi-automatic rifle bans can be defeated in blue states. Shea McQuestion, a Kali Key Representative even said, “We recognize that with every court victory we help fund, we are one step closer to making the Kali Key obsolete.”

What needs ban is low IQ politicians who can’t read or that have to low comprehension skills to understand the 2nd amendment portion of the constitution.
Do Not Comply!
Per FOPA any new gun registry by Federal, State, or local government is prohibited. Not that any law ever inhibited an Illinois politician. And to think Governor Jabba Pritzker, who makes Chris Christie look emaciated, wants to become U.S. president.
The Second Amendment NEVER ends. Until there is not one person Ieft on this pIanet.
One might also change the gas block to a closed/permanently OFF design and remove the gas tube, and run the AR as a straight pull bolt action. Cheaper than a KaliKey. A spot of weld on the gas block exit port (not the entry port from the barrel) will render one with an OFF gas block. When “Illannoy” poliicians get their spanking, switch to a functioning gas block, reinstall the gas tube, and go back to semi auto. Side charging upper makes this a really nice straight pull bolt gun. Used for years to avoid having brass “in the air”… Read more »
the reason the 1934 gun control act was found to be at least partly unconstitutional in 1968 criminals cannot be charged with unregistered machine gun
off with their heads destroy the communist democrats
A discussion of gun rights and registration, unfortunately, devolved into a promotion of a product. There are numerous other ways to disable semiautomatic operation, including removing the gas block, gas tube, or gas key. No need for a proprietary BCG.
I HAVE ONE QUESTION, WOULDN’T THIS BE CONSIDERED AN EXPOST FACTO LAW? – ( Ex post facto laws are expressly forbidden by the United States Constitution in Article 1, Section 9, Clause 3 (with respect to federal laws) and Article 1, Section 10 (with respect to state laws).
