Lake Wales, FL – A chilling encounter in a quiet Florida neighborhood concluded with an intruder behind bars and a homeowner vindicated for his decisive use of legal force in self-defense. Late Tuesday night, a resident of Lake Wales acted within his rights when he shot an intruder, Cameron McGuire, 34, who had unlawfully entered his home.
John Coles, the homeowner, was startled awake around 11:35 PM by his dog’s barking. From his bedroom, he spotted McGuire, a Caucasian male, inside his home, unsettlingly close to the family’s personal belongings. Reacting to the imminent threat, Coles confronted McGuire after seeing him continue to advance despite warnings to halt.
With no choice left as the intruder advanced towards him, Coles discharged his firearm, striking McGuire in the leg. He then held McGuire at gunpoint, maintaining control of the situation until law enforcement arrived. McGuire, who had a backpack belonging to Coles’s daughter, was subsequently arrested and charged with burglary and theft.
Lake Wales Police confirmed that McGuire, who has a significant criminal record including drug possession and domestic battery, had entered the home through a kitchen window. Released from state prison in February, McGuire’s history paints a troubling picture of repeat offenses.
Cameron McGuire, 34, Arrested

This incident underlines the critical right of individuals to defend their homes and families. Lt. Emmanuel Figueroa of the Lake Wales Police highlighted the legal framework supporting the homeowner’s actions, stating that every law-abiding citizen has the right to protect themselves and their property. This right is deeply embedded in our values and legal system, as affirmed by criminal defense experts and law enforcement officials alike.
Chief Chris Velasquez of the Lake Wales Police Department commended the homeowner’s lawful response, noting that McGuire should be thankful for being alive and now facing the consequences of his actions. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers homeowners face and the profound importance of the Second Amendment in safeguarding personal safety and security.
In the wake of this event, local authorities are reminding residents to secure their homes by locking all windows and doors, reiterating the necessity of preparedness and vigilance in preventing such perilous encounters.
This incident is another example of the effectiveness of responsible gun ownership but also reinforces the essential nature of self-defense rights in ensuring personal and familial safety against criminal intrusions.

Shoulda mag-dumped and saved the tax payers a bunch of money.
The homeowner needs more range time.
Kudos for the Dog-Alarm-System (DAS). IMHO, the DAS is to get the home owner UP and Looking, while a monitored alarm system is the ‘call police, fire, or medical assist’ while the homeowner is dealing with the problem.
