Springfield, VA – -(AmmoLand.com)- Gun Owners of America (GOA) filed a complaint against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for its reversal of an agreement which protects gun buyers from the potential negative effects of gun owner registration. Previously, a Michigan’s Concealed Pistol License (CPL) would exempt gun owners from the National Instant Background Check System (NICS) whenever they purchased firearms from a federal firearms licensed dealer (FFL).
In two dozen states, permit holders are exempted from undergoing a NICS check to purchase a firearm. However, due to so-called “Public Safety Advisories” issued by the ATF in states like Michigan, Minnesota, and Alabama, FFLs are now required to perform background checks on all gun purchasers.
“This is another unnecessary move by the ATF. Forcing background checks on individuals who have already been screened by the government is a poor use of time and resources, and always presents the danger of registering gun owners’ firearms purchases,” said Erich Pratt Senior Vice President of GOA.
“Gun Owners of America believes the Second Amendment prevents Federal and state governments from implementing prior restraints upon the right to keep and bear arms. The ATF’s recent policy reversal in Michigan is clearly a step in the wrong direction.”

Everything you need to know about ATF and how they operate.
so what NEEDS to happen is to remove marijuana fromSchedule One status, which it clearly is not anyway, AND to end the MI handgun registry as well. BOTH are serious infringements on multiple levels.
How about suppressor owners, they have gone through a very detailed background check.
Thank you GOA! As a MI resident this is incredibly relieving to know that at least one of the big gun groups are acknowledging this asinine rule changing! Donating to GOA again today!
The problem you run into with organizations like this is that they must always be seeking ways to justify their existence, or be disbanded. How much do you want to bet that they tell themselves there’s no way they’re going back to walking a beat? Imagine that: being beat cop verses an ATF Agent. “Oh hell no that ain’t going to happen!” So say they all.
Obviously everyone involved in this article knows absolutely nothing about Michigan gun laws. Michigan has a pistol registration. You buy a pistol and you get a sales record that by law has to go to your county sheriff within 7 days. This applies to every pistol sale, private or FFL. Even private sales of pistols are required to undergo a background check via a purchase permit unless you have a CPL in Michigan. Build a pistol? Yep, you have to fill out a sales record selling from yourself to yourself and undergo a background check before that happens. If you… Read more »
Good luck with this one . . .
Unfortunately the ATF is right, when Michigan legalized marijuana but still issued a carry permit to a user, that person is now prohibited from buying or owning firearms under Federal Law.
The Article neglected to mention the reason the ATF reversed itself on Michigan CPLs.
