Fairfax, VA – -(Ammoland.com)- The National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) welcomes Oklahoma as the newest constitutional carry state. Constitutional carry, now the law in 16 states across the country, allows law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms without first getting government permission to do.
The NRA-backed law, which took effect Friday, Nov. 1, fully recognizes the constitutional right of law-abiding gun owners to carry a firearm openly or concealed without a permit.
“Government exists for the people, not the other way around. This law honors the right of law-abiding Oklahomans to defend themselves and their loved ones without begging for the government’s permission beforehand,” said Jason Ouimet, executive director, NRA-ILA. “The NRA fights for law-abiding gun owners because we recognize that our freedoms are fundamental and natural, not government-given.”
For nearly 10 years, the NRA has worked closely with the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association to make constitutional carry a reality in Oklahoma.
“After 112 years, constitutional carry returns the fundamental right to self-defense to every law-abiding Oklahoman,” said Don Spencer, president, Oklahoma Second Amendment Association. “By eliminating financial barriers imposed by government permitting schemes, constitutional carry ensures that law-abiding, but economically disadvantaged Oklahomans can always protect themselves in times of crisis.”
H.B. 2597 passed both chambers with broad bi-partisan support (House vote 70-30 , Senate vote 40-6).
This law does not change prohibited person laws or any law governing the misuse of a firearm, prohibited places where a firearm cannot be carried, or when force may be used in defense of self or others.
Sixteen states – Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Kentucky – allow law-abiding individuals to carry a concealed handgun without a government-issued permit. (Montana allows Permitless Carry for all areas outside city limits – 99.4% of the state.)

Welcome to the club, Oklahoma.
I know that in my state, Arizona, the Arizona Citizens Defense League is the organization that got us Constitutional Carry and our current statewide CCW program along with a stream of 2A defensive measures. And today my county, Mohave County became a Second Amendment Sanctuary County, by unanimous decree of our Board of Supervisors. An NRA board member was present and spoke at the meeting but the weight was carried by those of us marching under the AZCDL banner. And that is the way it should be. State organizations need to lead the fight at the local level. We know… Read more »
“NRA backing” means squat. NRA always claims the victories of other groups’ hard work. SCREW THE NRA, MAY THEY DROP DEAD TWICE.
All the gun victories achieved were IN SPITE OF THE NRA, NOT BECAUSE OF IT. NOBODY IS DRINKING THAT KOOLAID.
AMMOLAND, STOP POSTING NRA PROPAGANDA; IT IS BENEATH YOU AND INFURIATING TO EVERY INTELLIGENT READER OF YOUR SITE!
I’ve been listening to Mark Walters AAR Podcast lately and found there to be some inside issues with Wayne LaPierre. Is this the end of NRA or are they “fixing the problem”? I always trusted them to be our #1 lobby group but with all this hoopla, who do we turn to as a voice in Washington?
This is a Flat out lie: “For nearly 10 years, the NRA has worked closely with the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association to make constitutional carry a reality in Oklahoma.” The fact is that the NRA of Oklahoma has said many times over the last few years, they poled their members and found that their members were against Constitutional Carry and have advised the State representatives of there findings also stated their opinin on the local news…. If anything last year when it was vetoed by the old Governor they had there hand in that pushing her to do so….. I… Read more »
The NRA is shameless.
Texas is fortunate to have Abbott,I have lost some of my shine for the AG,we get one depressed person that drives 11hrs to El Paso, with an illegal rifle, and he’s ready to Red Flag the state.BS!!! Red Flag is the end around the 2nd, and even worse it IGNORES the Constitution!. The 2nd, and 4th for sure, likely a couple more. A lot of folks were really happy to get open carry passed in Texas(why I do not know, why not just paint a bullseye on your back?). Even worse than that the LE didn’t LIKE that,so they gave them the right… Read more »
I once was a member of the NRA, but no more. All they did was lie to me and charge me ongoing fees that I never authorized. This was money that you would be better served just shooting yourself in the head over, than ever getting it back. I pleaded with them to no avail, finally being forced to put stop payments on my account in order to stop them from ravaging it. This is why the NRA suffers from the more serious issues that they do: it’s because it’s run by a bunch of money grubbing hacks that use… Read more »
