Ferguson, MO – A heated dispute turned violent in Ferguson, Missouri, leading to a justified self-defense shooting that left three people injured, including the shooter, Donnovan Gray. Gray, 51, now faces multiple charges, including assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
The incident occurred on the evening of July 22, 2024, in the 1000 block of Renshaw Drive. According to police reports, Gray went to the victim’s home to confront a female resident about a trailer he had parked at their residence. The argument quickly escalated when Gray became enraged and began strangling the woman.
As the altercation intensified, a male resident arrived home and attempted to mediate the situation. Witnesses reported that Gray, who has a prior felony conviction, drew a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the male victim’s head. In response, the male victim drew his own handgun, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Gray shot the male victim multiple times in the abdomen, causing life-threatening injuries. Despite being wounded, the male victim managed to return fire, hitting Gray in the shoulder. Gray also shot the female victim in the leg during the chaotic scene.
Five children were present in the home at the time of the shooting and sought refuge in another room, mere feet away from the violence.
Emergency services transported both the male and female victims to the hospital. The male victim underwent emergency surgery due to the severity of his injuries. Gray was also taken to the hospital for his gunshot wound.
St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons is leading the investigation. Gray has been charged with two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and endangering the welfare of a child. He is currently being held without bond.
This incident highlights the critical importance of self-defense rights and the trained skills to quickly and decidedly defend oneself with deadly force. The male victim’s swift actions in protecting himself and the other victim underscore the need for law-abiding citizens to be prepared to protect themselves in dangerous situations.
