Colorado – What You Need To Know: A “license to buy” gun owners card was added through an amendment on Second Reading in the Senate. It implements training requirements and a registry to purchase the guns banned under SB25-003.
It’s going to third and final vote in the State Senate on February 18th. If it passes it will move to the House Chamber.

The Details: When introduced, Colorado SB25-003 was the most sweeping firearm ban to have ever been considered at the state level, going far beyond a typical “assault weapons” ban by targeting all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns with detachable magazines, along with gas-operated semi-automatic pistols that can accept a detachable magazine. Simply a blanket ban on the sale, transfer, purchase, and manufacture of these weapons.
After a flurry of rushed amendments were added during the 10-hour-long Senate floor debate on Second Reading that went well after midnight, the bill still includes a gun ban, but now has morphed into a monster of a bill with multiple moving parts complete with a new license to buy scheme that includes brand new training requirements and what will undoubtedly be a gun owner registry.
If the new version were to be enacted, it would “allow” people to still purchase the banned guns if they have taken a hunter safety course and a firearm safety course that would be managed by Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife (CPW), or without the CPW classes, take a yet to be developed 12-hour course over two days, and apply for a gun buyers license complete with fingerprints and a background check that would be overseen by your sheriff and CBI.
All by September 1, 2025. Can you imagine the bottleneck this will create in CPW, CBI, and sheriffs’ offices?
The “license to buy” amendment, was introduced by bill sponsor Democrat Julie Gonzales. It creates a Colorado Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card that individuals can obtain by jumping through the government’s new hoops, and only then will they be able to purchase the banned guns with renewal required every 5 years. If you’re familiar with the Illinois FOID Card, this is very similar. And that FOID card was just very recently found unconstitutional in federal court.
They are planning to take this mutated bill to a third and final vote of the Senate Tuesday, February 18th! If it passes it will move to the House Chamber.

And what is the deal with taking ” classes”? What do gun banning politicians know about gun control classes? Operating under the color of law is a felony. We will never need a license to buy or carry, as they are just as unconstitutional as a poll tax or license to vote, speak your mind, or worship. We will also never register any firearms. These politicians are all enemies of the state, of liberty and of the Supreme Law of the Land, as their actions make clear. more crap to take to federal court to waste our time and money
All the blue states are doing the same thing. We have it here too but right now measure 114 is being held because it is unconstitutional but the legislature has made new laws to circumvent the stoppage. Measure that is now a law was 2005 which now makes it illegal for you to have a home made gun without a serial number from the DOJ on it. 10 years and a 250 thousand dollar fine.
