American gun owners scored a major victory that will resonate across the firearms community for decades: the long-loathed $200 National Firearms Act (NFA) tax stamp that hung like an unconstitutional fee over suppressors, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), short-barreled shotguns (SBSs), and “any other weapons” (AOWs) is officially reduced to $0 beginning January 1, 2026. The federal tax that once made lawful ownership of suppressors and SBRs unnecessarily expensive has been abolished.
The $200 NFA Tax Stamp — Finally Gone
Gun owners have fought for years to repeal the NFA, and while we fell short of that goal, removing the $200 tax stamp on certain NFA items is a massive step in the right direction for the restoration of Second Amendment rights. For years, gun rights advocates decried the NFA tax stamp as nothing more than a poll tax by another name, a financial barrier designed to limit Americans’ access to firearms that enhance safety and utility. Those cries for reform are now a reality.
Thanks to the passage of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” and its signature into law in July 2025, the federal excise tax on suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs will be zero dollars ($0) as of January 1, 2026.

What This Means
🔹 No More $200 Federal Tax Stamp
Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, the once-mandatory $200 tax for the federal NFA stamp on suppressors and short-barreled firearms no longer exists. The tax is now $0 — freeing everyday gun owners from an outdated and punitive tax burden.
🔹 Registration Still Exists
Let’s be clear — the ATF’s Form 1 (manufacture) and Form 4 (transfer) process, background checks, fingerprints, and photos still apply before taking lawful possession of these items. What’s gone is the tax collection for the stamp, but you still need a stamp.
Confused? So is the DOJ. They are currently still supporting the registration requirement for all NFA items, including suppressors and SBRs.
🔹 Other NFA Items Still Taxed
Machine guns and destructive devices still carry the $200 tax stamp, fee, and the fight for overcoming that infringement on American gun owners is likely the next battleground for Second Amendment rights.

End of the NFA? Huge Win for Gun Owners
Suppressors aren’t toys; they’re hearing safety devices. Hunters, sport shooters, and armed professionals alike know that reducing sound pressure protects shooters and bystanders every time the trigger is pulled. Suppressors do more than make your firearm tactical; they are safety gear. Removing the tax makes safety more affordable for everyday gun owners.
SBRs — once financially burdened by the additional cost of a tax stamp — now become a much more appealing configuration for shooters focused on maneuverability, truck guns, or home defense rigs.
The Fight Isn’t Over — But This Is a Monumental Step
While the tax being set at $0 is massive, many gun rights activists argue that the registration and transfer requirements themselves are unconstitutional once the tax (the rationale for the law) is gone. That legal fight is well underway. Representatives like Andrew Clyde have already publicly urged the Department of Justice to push back on the NFA entirely after the tax elimination.

As of January 1, 2026:
⭐ Suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs — $0 Federal Tax Stamp
⭐ Still Require ATF Approval & Paperwork
⭐ Machine Guns & Destructive Devices Still Taxed
This is a huge win for the Second Amendment. The federal government can no longer impose a financial barrier on lawful gun owners simply for owning sound-suppressing technology or short-barreled firearms. The unconstitutional tax is gone…sort of.

Hmmm….does that $0 fee make that government jack boot still on your inalienable right throat feel all better????
Thank you President Trump! You’re the man!!! I sure with I could get the $600 I paid in those tax theft charges back!
Don’t rush in to do your paperwork, I got my first guy through and the system shut down on the second. I Haven’t been able to get anything through the last hour and a half.
IMHO, this is NOT a win for gun owners as long as the unconstitutional NFA’34 is still on the books. The paperwork (READ: registration) and the created list are beyond the phrase “shall not be infringed.” Our Founders understood the simple truth that the populous NEEDED to be completely in charge to avoid governmental tyranny, and to do that, the populous NEEDED to be armed with the current weapons of any time frame. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED is simple and straightforward. Amazing how expensive a can of baffles is now, in celebration of the dropping of a comparatively inexpensive tax.
