Fairfax, VA – -(Ammoland.com)- Libraries in your community, which are members of the Missouri Library Association, are seeking to restrict your ability to defend yourself and reverse the hard-won progress achieved with the passage of Senate Bill 656 back in 2016.
During their annual conference, the Missouri Library Association voted to include in its legislative agenda a desire to allow libraries to opt out of allowing law-abiding citizens to defend themselves while on their properties.
“Vicky Baker, president of the Missouri Library Association, feels libraries were inadvertently left out of the law.
Back in October, the membership of the Missouri Library Association voted at their annual conference on a legislative agenda that included a desire to have public libraries included in Chapter 571.107, the current concealed carry law. That would give library administrators the option to prohibit — or continue to allow — firearms on their properties, Baker said in an email.
Daniel Boone Regional Library Director Melissa Carr said the process for change has already begun.
“We want to have individual conversations with legislators,” Carr said. “We want to let local library boards make the decision about what might be appropriate for their community.”
Public libraries often have many children inside, and, Carr said, it’s important to protect them. Baker agreed.”
Such “gun-free zones” do nothing to prevent criminals from carrying firearms illegally while leaving law-abiding citizens [and children] defenseless when they cross an arbitrary threshold into certain areas.

TX libraries have been allowing concealed carry, albeit often against their will, without any problems, since 1996. If it was going to be an issue, we should have seen some problems by now, don’t you think?
Missouri makes it a felony to carry on a bus, city, school or Greyhound. I guess that is a ploy to sell more cars?
Being legal, I carry every time I go into any library. I HOPE I will never have to USE mu weapon, but if its keepit holstered or use it to defend the lifes of the kids or parents or homeless getting inside out of the cold, I’ll do it in a heartbeat. It would REALLY mess up my day, as I hate having “conversations” with law enforcement when my liberty is on the line. But just run out the door and leave the rest behind defenseless? NO WAY. And my town is a liberal socialist zone, s libraries are fairly… Read more »
We had this same issue here in Kansas a while back. Libraries could have a guard, metal detector,or allow concealed carry. After the decision deadline passed, the no CCW signs came down. Blood and mayhem was predicted. Of course, none of that happened. I frequent the library with my .45 concealed. I suspect there are others like myself. Seems like the same library atmosphere as before. I hope those across the border will take note of the non-issue it is here.
Liberals only think of them selves and not what the general population needs – I hope and pray that the Missouri governing bodies do not recognize this bad program
INTERROGATIVE? What would happen to an individual that had a legal CCW, carried concealed and had to use his weapon to defend small children in a library against, lets say an ISIS madman? During the firefight the perp was killed. Would a prosecuting attorney have the balls to go after the CCW?
Bad guys love gun free zones.
Libraries aren’t needed as much now with everyone owning computers and the availability of the internet.
My opinion is they need to be more customer friendly and making them a gun free zone is not customer friendly.
I think it is time for a law that states any taxpayer funded property should not be allowed to be a gun free zone as it prevents the citizens from their constitutional rights under the second amendment.
